Chapter 53: A New Mission.
"Father," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, "if women are so inferior, then it stands to reason that I shouldn’t even eat with men." With that, she stormed out, the tent flap snapping behind her like a whip.
’ Sigh... Poor girl. I definitely know how that must feel.’ Lin Mu shook his head with pity inwardly.
’ Big sister...’ Mei scrambled to her feet, her playful demeanor gone, replaced by a quiet worry. "I’ll go after her," she murmured, casting a glance at Lin Mu before hurrying out.
Lin Mu seized the moment, rising as well, his voice steady but urgent.
" You needn’t worry sir."
"I’ll check on her too," he said, though his intentions lay elsewhere. He slipped out into the night, the cold air biting at his skin as he scanned the camp.
Instead of following the sisters, he flagged down a nearby guard, a young man with a nervous demeanor. "Tell the tribesmen I’ll be in secluded cultivation for a while," Lin Mu said, his tone leaving no room for questions. "No one is to disturb me, Understand?" The guard nodded, and Lin Mu turned back toward his tent and left.
«[Well this is surprising... For a second there, I thought you were really going after her.]»
" And why would I do that? It’s not like she’d listen to me if I tried. Going after her would only make things worse... Lian definitely comes off as the type of person who’d hate to be pitied.’
’ Like grandpa once said... there’s nothing more dangerous than an angry woman. But I guess in this case, an angry wife.’ Lin Mu said half jokingly.
’ Might as well leave now and find a away to settle this dispute later, my times about to run out anyways, I can’t have her seeing me vanish into thin air, now can I?"
«[True...]»
«[Just didn’t think you would have this level of rationality in you, Could it be that that near death experience finally straightened you out.]»
’ And looks like your mouths still as troublesome as ever.’
Lin Mu’s face darkened for a moment but he didn’t reply, instead continuing on.
He soon reached his destination. The tent’s interior welcomed him with its familiar scents of herbs and leather, the oil lamp still flickering weakly.
Without hesitation, Lin Mu told the system to cancel the dimensional session and his body turned to glistening red sand that faded into thin air.
Lin Mu reemerged in his modest home in a sudden swirl of red sand coalescing around him, gritty and warm, as if the very earth had exhaled him back into existence.
The familiar atmosphere of the bloody red dessert dimension, replaced by the stale, faintly dusty smell of his small living space on Earth.
His boots, still caked with traces of alien soil, left faint marks on the worn wooden floor as he steadied himself, his lean frame tensing at the abrupt shift.
’ Well that’s still as disorienting as ever...’
Before he could fully process the return, his phone buzzed on the nearby table, its screen glowing with a single message from his master, Li Fei: Meet me at the villa. Now.
’ What could she want so soon, it’s only been an hour since I left.’ the speed of time during his dimensional travels had shifted to ten days an hour so it was within reason he was surprised by the quick reach out.
’ Just what is she after.’
The words carried her usual curt authority, and Lin Mu’s dark eyes narrowed, a flicker of curiosity tinged with wariness crossing his sharp features.
A sharp knock at the door broke his thoughts.
’ Who is it now?’
’ Why does it seem like everyone keeps taking away more and more of my free time.’
He crossed the room in a few strides, his movements fluid yet cautious, and opened it to find his master’s maid, a young woman whose emotionless face seemed carved from porcelain, her expression as unreadable as ever.
’ She already sent her to get me...?’ Lin Mu was at a loss. Just what could’ve happened if he had decided to return to the broken star dimension before receiving her call. Would she have began searching for him all over the city?
The maids hair was strangely neat without a single strand out of place, and her uniform immaculate like before, giving her the air of a shadow given form. Without a word, she gestured for him to follow, her silence familiar as always.
’ Guess I’m in for a long silent drive, And just when I got back from a ten day excursion.’
Lin Mu smiled helplessly and trailed her to a sleek black car waiting outside, a new car than the other luxury car she had previously dropped him off with, its engine humming softly in the quiet night.
Just like before, the cars appearance naturally attracted the shocked gazes of the neighbors but Lin Mu payed them no heed and neither did the maid.
The drive to Li Fei’s villa was wordless, the city lights blurring past the tinted windows, casting fleeting reflections on the maid’s impassive face as she navigated the streets with practiced ease.
The villa soon loomed before him, its modern angles and glass walls stark against the surrounding pines.
Lin Mu stepped out, the cool night air brushing his skin, and followed the maid inside, where the faint scent of jasmine incense greeted him.
Li Fei waited in a spacious study, reclining in a high-backed chair behind a polished desk. Her presence was magnetic, her sharp eyes glinting like polished obsidian beneath a cascade of silky smooth hair with signs of wetness that suggested she had just exited from the shower.
She wore a tailored crimson robe, its edges embroidered with subtle gold threads, exuding an aura of nobility.
"I’m glad you responded right away" she said, her voice smooth yet laced with scrutiny.
’ More like I had no choice...’
Lin Mu met her gaze, his expression guarded, his face catching the lamplight.
" I’m far more curious why you called me back so soon." he replied.
