Chapter 202: Chapter 59: White Ape Offering Fruit, Immortal’s Guidance
White Ape was waiting under that tree.
Xiao Jie caught up and said, "Senior, please go ahead."
Yet, White Ape said, "What’s there to say, we haven’t gotten anywhere yet, keep climbing." Saying this, he leapt towards the mountain top once again.
Xiao Jie looked up, fearing the peak must be over a kilometer high, enveloped in clouds, with no view of its top.
Did they have to climb all the way to the mountain top?
Now he understood why White Ape had said only he could handle this task—ordinary people couldn’t even manage the climb.
Xiao Jie, having no other choice, ate a piece of Roasted Meat and continued upwards.
Fortunately, the peak wasn’t just a stark spike; though towering and steep, here and there bulging rocks or recessed mountain walls were visible, where one could sit and rest to regain energy.
Climbing piece by piece upward, after more than an hour, Xiao Jie finally reached the mountain top.
Looking down, the tremendous height was dizzying.
Surrounded by swirling clouds, a narrow mountain ridge lay ahead, its continuation obscured by the clouds. White Ape was not far ahead waiting for him; Xiao Jie quickly caught up and stopped before the white fog.
White Ape gazed at the fog ahead, seemingly pondering something.
"Senior, what exactly do you need me to do?" Xiao Jie asked, impatient.
White Ape said softly, "You just told me a story, now let me tell you one. It’s also about a monkey—only it isn’t some naturally-formed Stone Monkey, just a normal little monkey called Mao Mao."
Xiao Jie’s heart trembled; this White Ape indeed had some connection with Mao Mao.
White Ape’s gaze turned distant, his voice drifting as though he had returned to times long past.
"Mao Mao, watch closely—"
One Cut, Two Pieces! Swish, three parallel dry branches were chopped down together.
"Your turn," the Woodcutter said, passing the Firewood Axe to him.
Mao Mao scratched his head, glanced at the Firewood Axe in his hand, then at his expectant master not far off, and raised the axe to the branches.
One chop down, crack, and another branch was cut off.
The Woodcutter nodded satisfactorily, "Haha, well done. Here, have a steamed bun for your efforts." Mao Mao immediately took the steamed bun and started nibbling joyously.
Just after finishing the steamed bun, the Woodcutter passed the axe back to him, "Keep going, don’t stop, just like before, we need to chop no less than ten bundles of firewood today. Once you’ve learned, I won’t have to work so hard anymore."
The owner’s words baffled Mao Mao, completely at a loss as to what he was saying.
He could only continue chopping firewood one chop at a time.
Yet, lacking the strength of a human, a careless chop, crack, landed on a knot, not cutting through the branch but chipping the axe instead.
"Clumsy, so clumsy, can’t even do this right, look, you’ve chipped the axe again! Useless, truly useless, you cannot be taught!" The Woodcutter swatted him repeatedly with a branch, Mao Mao yelping in fright, unable to understand why his master was so angry, so terrifying.
The Woodcutter looking at Mao Mao’s terrified demeanor sighed, "Repairing this axe costs fifty cents, enough to buy ten steamed buns, if you keep this up, how are we supposed to live down the road?"
"You keep chopping slowly; I’ll check if there are any mushrooms, I’ll make you mushroom soup tonight."
After saying this, to prevent Mao Mao from running away, the Woodcutter simply tied Mao Mao’s neck with a rope to a large tree.
Watching the Woodcutter leave, Mao Mao immediately sprang to action, tired of the beatings, he was filled with anger and resentment. Watching his master depart, he chopped through the rope around his neck and turned towards the forest ahead and fled.
He and his master often passed by that forest and had long noticed that many monkeys seemed to live there freely in the valley. Each time he saw those monkeys living freely, he envied it immensely, thinking how wonderful it would be to live freely in that forest.
So, without hesitation, he dove into the valley...
Xiao Jie, realizing the truth at this point, said, "So Senior Yuan is Mao Mao? But why is Senior Yuan aged..."
"Want to know?—Hehe, to find out what happens next, tune in to the next episode," said the Saber Saint.
"Ah!" Xiao Jie was speechless.
However, White Ape just laughed loudly, clearly very pleased with Xiao Jie’s reaction, "Just joking with you; the story isn’t that long, keep listening..."
Mao Mao shivered as he looked at the Great Barbarian Ape sitting on the stone platform, its massive muscles appearing utterly terrifying.
Several monkeys behind him pushed him forward to the Great Barbarian Ape.
"King, a monkey has run into the valley from outside."
The Great Barbarian Ape picked up Mao Mao and inspected him, but his gaze fell on the Firewood Axe in his hand.
Without a second word, he snatched it away.
"That’s mine," Mao Mao protested, rushing forward to snatch it back, but the Great Barbarian Ape kicked him away.
The Great Barbarian Ape coldly huffed, "What’s yours and mine, I am the king of this Monkey Valley, everything in this valley belongs to me, and if you dare disrupt again, I’ll send you to the canyon to feed the Tree Demon."
Mao Mao still wanted to fight back, but an old monkey beside him grabbed him and pulled him away.
When they reached a secluded place with no other monkeys around, the old monkey let go of his hand and consoled, "Little monkey, don’t anger the king. With your tiny frame, the king could kill you with one punch."
"Wuu wuu, I was bullied by my master before, and now by other monkeys here, why should they bully me!"
"This is the life of a monkey; it’s hard being a monkey, yet living in this world is not without hardships. Here, try this; drink and you will feel no pain." saying this, he handed over a gourd.
Mao Mao took a sip from the gourd and immediately grinned and jumped around.
"Hahaha, how is it, tasty isn’t it? This is the Monkey Wine I brewed myself."
It turned out that the old monkey, the Great Barbarian Ape, and the White Ape had such a past. Xiao Jie couldn’t help but sigh upon hearing this; things have certainly changed.
"What happened next?"
The White Ape sneered, "How could I be content, I asked the old monkey how one could control their own destiny, the old monkey told me that one must have enough strength." The White Ape said, as he gazed into the mist ahead, his thoughts drifting back to the past...
[The old monkey solemnly said, "Only with great power can one control their fate. You see that highest mountain peak? It is said that immortals reside there, and if you could find an immortal, you could certainly discover a way to change your destiny."
"Why don’t you go find them?"
"Alas, I have tried, but the mountain cliffs are too high and steep, no monkey can climb it, this leg of mine was crippled during the climb, and now I can’t even climb trees."
Mao Mao’s gaze upon the towering peak was utterly firm, "I will definitely be able to climb it."
The next morning, Mao Mao got up early and took the gourd of Monkey Wine from the old monkey’s embrace.
He picked some fruits from the trees, tied them to his body with a vine, and then started climbing towards the mountain. Initially, he fell several times, but Mao Mao thought of an idea, he made a lasso from the rope that was holding him, and whenever he met a protruding rock, he looped the lasso around it. This prevented him from slipping, and after climbing all day, he finally reached the top of the mountain by evening.
Then he arrived at the edge of a mist...]
"What happened next?" Xiao Jie asked curiously.
The White Ape chuckled, "What happens next, you’ll have to see for yourself."
Saying this, his expression suddenly became very serious, "Listen carefully, boy, this matter is very dangerous, and if you handle it poorly, you could lose your life. Make sure to remember what I say."
Xiao Jie quickly said, "Please instruct me, Senior."
"You keep walking into the mist ahead; remember not to linger in the mist and especially not to engage with anything within the mist, just keep charging forward.
Once you pass through the sea of mist, you will reach the peak of a mountain, where there is a pavilion with two people playing chess.
One of the players is wearing a white robe, and the other is in black.
Do not speak to them, just serve by the side. There is a small table next to them with some food and drinks; place the prepared fruits and drinks on it. If the immortals want to drink, you serve the wine; if they want fruits, you hand them the fruits. Once they finish their game of chess, you may then kneel and ask for help.
After they have taken your fruits and drunk your wine, naturally they’ve accrued your favor, becoming part of your cause and effect, and will agree to help you.
Then you can ask them a question for me.
The question is—
’Why, even though I have attained great power and become the king of this valley, do I still live unhappily? I find these monkeys stupid, yet humans too cunning and unreasonable; how can I live happily?’
If they ask who is asking, just mention the White Ape of old, and they will understand.
Bring back their answer to me, and I will naturally teach you my Illusion Destruction Divine Sword."
No sooner had the White Ape finished speaking than Xiao Jie saw a system prompt appear before him.
