So We Must Surpass Humans!

(5200) The church was located in the center of the city, often surrounded by believers stopping to pray.

Both the clerics and monks of the Huai Guang Church predominantly wore white robes.

This preference was shared by the congregation, which made a group of black-robed followers, whose robes were adorned with dark gray concentric circle emblems, strikingly conspicuous as they lingered at the church entrance.

The contrast in hues was simply too stark.

Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the Four Great Orthodox Churches of Terra would immediately recognize this as a procession of the Retrospection Sect.

Those with a broader scope of knowledge would discern that this was a student group, led by an Instructor.

The foremost few in the group clutched thick, heavy religious tomes bound in metallic chains, exuding an air of scholarliness.

The Retrospection Sect had followers across the Whole Terra, but just as Huai Guang was primarily active in the Seven Cities Alliance, the Central Empire, Steep Ridge Fortress, and the Yanjiang Region; the Spiritual Tool Church concentrated in the Fiery Flame Land, City of Knowledge, and Far Shore Island; and the Hall of Ten Thousand Spirits was centered near the Azure Sky Royal Court and Canaan Moore—

The Retrospection Sect’s main areas of activity were the Yanjiang Region, Gantreignum, and the Nine Cold Quiet Mountains, where they also maintained good relations with the Fae.

Their only shortcoming lay in their weak presence.

Focused on studying the realm of the Deceased, their attitude towards the world of the living could be described as either “avoidance” or “observation.”

Like funeral homes or crematoriums—part of the human world, yet avoided unless absolutely necessary—hardly anyone would deliberately engage with them.

“Why are they here?”

Seeing the Retrospection Sect’s procession, Ian couldn’t help but feel surprised.

“Moreover, there’s an ‘Instructor’… This is an official group of clerics.”

With the development of Harrison Port, other Orthodox Churches had sent missionaries to this area.

However, upon realizing that the Huai Guang Church already had an established presence here, most chose to move on to more remote villages or to simply give up missionary work, opting instead to set up mere offices.

The Retrospection Sect had also visited a few years ago.

They maintained a small office in the New City District on the western side of town, typically handling requests for end-of-life prayers.

Typically, an office was sufficient for such indirect communication, networking, and information exchange, making it unnecessary to station Sublimators or, let alone, clerics.

As for an “Instructor,” who was a formal cleric of the Retrospection Sect, they would rarely leave their Sacred Temple or the “basegrounds” used to connect to the Domain of Void.

—Something serious must be happening!

This thought sprung into Ian’s mind, prompting him to instinctively raise his guard.

“What could warrant the involvement of a Retrospection Instructor?

Could it be some impending natural disaster in the Southern Sea?”

But the Foresight View indicated no such signs.

He watched as the Retrospection Sect’s procession entered the church.

After pondering for a moment, he decided to follow, bringing Elan and Elder Pude with him.

The Retrospection Sect’s procession had made prior arrangements.

Bishop White Mist greeted them personally but was visibly taken aback when he saw Ian trailing at the back of the group.

He exchanged a few words with the Instructor at the front of the procession.

As they spoke, the Instructor turned her head curiously, casting her gaze towards Ian.

She was a woman with skin so pale it was nearly translucent, faint blue veins visible along her neck.

Her eyes were covered with a blindfold; by looking only at her cheeks and chin, one might mistake her for being fairly young.

Yet her body appeared exceptionally frail, like that of someone who had been bedridden for years.

However, an invisible force seemed to sustain her movements, leaving others with a deep sense of her presence and power.

“It’s him.” The Instructor turned her head slightly.

Despite her blindfolded eyes, Ian felt as though their gazes were meeting.

She revealed a gentle, beautiful smile and said to Bishop White Mist, “Go ahead and speak with him first.

We are not in a hurry.”

“Thank you for your understanding.”

Bishop White Mist nodded.

“You’ve endured a long journey.

Please rest for a while in the quiet room at the back hall.

We will provide food and incense.”

With those words, he unexpectedly left the Retrospection Sect’s group and walked straight toward Ian.

“It’s been a long time.”

This elderly man, whose robes bore patches and whose hair and beard were disheveled, smiled and said, “Welcome back home, Ian.

Your current achievements are truly impressive… Little Elan, aren’t you happy to see your brother?”

He turned his head to kindly greet the young boy, who was still enjoying a sausage.

Startled, Elan quickly swallowed the bite in his mouth, stood up straight, and said, “Yes, Grandpa White Mist!

I’m very happy!”

“I have some matters to discuss with your brother, which may take a bit of time.

Why don’t you go outside and play with Posi and the others?”

Bishop White Mist suggested.

Elan hesitated for a moment, glancing at Ian, but after receiving a reassuring nod from his brother, he happily ran off to find the other children raised by Huai Guang to play with.

In recent years, as Harrison Port’s economy flourished, the local Huai Guang Church had gained wealth and had started, like the areas around the Holy Mountain, adopting orphans to train as monks.

Some of these children trained alongside Elan, and they typically played together, forming close bonds.

“I’ll keep an eye on the kids.”

Elder Pude clasped his hands behind his back and followed after Elan, leaving the main group.

He could clearly sense that Ian and Bishop White Mist had matters to discuss that were not meant for him.

Instead of being asked to leave later, he chose to step away proactively.

Ian, meanwhile, followed Bishop White Mist to the reception room at the rear of the church.

“That Instructor actually recognized me.

I don’t recall being that famous.”

On their way, Ian didn’t mince words.

He knew that honest, direct communication was the right approach with these genuine clerics of Huai Guang.

“Does the Four Great Orthodox Churches exchange ‘persons of interest’ lists containing people like me?”
