(6200) Miles returned from the Knight Manor with a bundle of firewood on his back and a bag of charcoal in his arms.

Nobody cared what he was carrying because everyone knew that this purple-haired young man had excellent swordsmanship, and in the hilly area, a death wasn’t much of a concern.

To the west of the settlement, a shaky straw and wood hut was his current residence.

Its former owner was an old Mountain People Hunter with a broken leg who was attacked by a Magical Beast Giant Bear during a great hunt.

He shot his companion in the ankle, delaying the beast and surviving the encounter.

For attacking his companion, the tribe amputated his leg and cast him out to fend for himself on the mountainside, where he managed to live until the eve of this winter’s onset with his archery skills that could hit birds in flight and pierce through a person’s throat.

After his death, Miles used his sword to seize the right to live in the hut.

In the process of seizing it, he killed three fellow refugees who intended to kidnap Cynthia to threaten him, showing no mercy despite the fact they were ‘countrymen’.

And this display of power was quite effective.

“Brother?”

Upon entering the hut, the man heard a somewhat weak voice of a girl.

A girl with light orange hair was tending to the Spark in the house.

Seeing Miles return, she turned her head and smiled, saying, “The fire didn’t go out, and the water in the kettle next to it is warm, you should drink some quickly.”

“You take a sip first, don’t catch a cold.” Miles bent down to hug Cynthia and began to add wood shavings to the nearly extinguished embers.

“No one came by, right?”

“No one,” the girl shook her head.

“It’s been too cold lately, no one dares to come out.”

Without firewood, the moist air would quickly extinguish the Spark, and starting a fire was troublesome.

Moreover, with Cynthia’s constitution, stepping outside into the cold wind was devastating, so Miles had no choice but to leave her inside the hut.

Of course, he wasn’t so naïve to think that a show of violence would deter a group of desperate thugs.

Therefore, in the previous few instances, though Miles appeared to have left, he actually stayed near the hut.

All refugees who sneaked near were personally killed by him, their heads hung beneath the eaves of the hut, swaying in the wind, deterring everyone.

Once everyone knew that the girl in the hut was the person Miles cared about the most, no one dared to lay a finger on Cynthia.

For a young Swordsman who could potentially slaughter an entire village if he learned his sister was hurt, it’s no wonder that the knights from Nauman City would praise Miles for good killings – would they really expect to force the Swordsman to lay down his weapons using a little girl as leverage?

Even if it was possible, they wouldn’t dare to gamble.

After all, aside from themselves, no one cared about their lives.

It was precisely because Miles understood this that he outwardly displayed such ruthlessness and coldness.

“To live by the sword… huh.

To live by the sword.”

Having added the firewood and beginning to cook the soup, the young man’s eyes reflected the flickering flames as he sneered inwardly.

At his naïve past self.

In Azure City, when Miles fantasized about making a living with his sword on his adventures, he never thought wandering would be so unbearably tough.

Back then, adventure to him meant a life of thrilling heroism, of roaming clouds and breezes, of riding horses and wielding swords under the sun, of slaying villains and monsters.

But that was just a fantasy.

Life was always so difficult.

Today’s meal was soybean soup.

Miles and Cynthia quietly shared and finished a pot of thoroughly cooked mushy bean soup, then sat quietly by the stove to rest.

Strangely enough, since they fled from Azure City and made their way to South Ridge, they haven’t fallen ill nor felt particularly exhausted, and even their sensitivity to pain seemed dull… but this wasn’t entirely a good thing.

Once, while walking on a mountain path, Cynthia’s arm was scratched by thorns, but she herself felt nothing.

It wasn’t until the evening when Miles found large scabs formed on the girl’s arm and saw Cynthia’s pale face and unsteady walking that he realized something was wrong.

This abnormality was hardly reassuring, and Miles also tried cutting his own finger with a knife, only to be shocked to find that he truly lost much of his pain sensation.

There was a force residing in their bodies that kept them from knowing fatigue or pain, allowing them to travel all the way from the Western Territory to South Ridge… This force allowed a girl of barely ten to endure all the hardships along the way, yet it also gradually made people lose control over their own ‘lives’.

“We can’t go on like this.”

The cold wind slapped against the straw hut outside the window, and Cynthia had already fallen asleep.

Miles sat silently in front of the fire.

He hadn’t properly slept in a long time, perhaps due to Spirit Energy, his mind wasn’t tired, but his brain and body desperately needed rest.

“The abnormalities in Cynthia and me, we need to find a Sublimator or even a Spirit Energy User fast to resolve them…

I’m probably awakened as a Spirit Energy User, finding work shouldn’t be too hard.”

Miles thought quietly to himself: “But how to prove that?

My Spirit Energy can only be used in danger, like if Cynthia is about to be hit by a falling branch, the branch will veer towards me, and my physical strength will be enhanced—If it’s not dangerous, like an Ordinary squirrel throwing a pine cone, the Spirit Energy won’t work.”

“Am I supposed to let others shoot arrows at Cynthia?

Absolutely not… I don’t even understand the nature of my Spirit Energy; how can I use Cynthia as a Dao?”
