Chapter 801: Chapter 803: A Chun’s External Assignment_1
Two days had passed in the blink of an eye, and Diao Yao still hadn’t appeared, Bai Ruozhu was also becoming impatient. She couldn’t detoxify Chu Hai; she could only temporarily control the toxins. She feared the most she could do was keep him alive for two more days.
After all, it was a life at stake, Bai Ruozhu really didn’t want it to end at her own hands, and she also would find it difficult to explain to Diao Yao and the people of the Bihai Sect.
Fortunately, by noon, Diao Yao arrived with Elder Wu and others. Elder Wu looked very displeased with Bai Ruozhu, as if she had swayed the Bihai Sect’s proud disciple, even blaming Bai Ruozhu for Chu Hai’s poisoning.
Bai Ruozhu couldn’t be bothered to argue with him; as long as she could send Chu Hai away quickly, she would be grateful.
"Sister Bai, thank you," Diao Yao said with tearful eyes.
Bai Ruozhu looked at the frail little loli before her and felt a great pity, "Does Chu Hai know that you like him?"
Diao Yao’s face flushed to her ear-roots. She looked at Bai Ruozhu in alarm and said, "Who said I liked him? Sister Bai, you have misunderstood; he once saved my life, I should repay the favor."
Seeing her reaction, Bai Ruozhu smiled and said nothing more. Whether she liked him or not, her own heart was clear.
"Diao Yao, what are you rambling about over there? Get moving. Chu Hai has been harmed to this state, and you’re still in the mood to talk with her?" Elder Wu said, not hiding his irritation.
Diao Yao shrank her neck and muttered softly, "It’s not Sister Bai’s fault, Uncle-Master is just being unreasonable."
Elder Wu, upon hearing her, glared fiercely at Diao Yao, "You still dare to speak? Wait until I get back and see if I don’t tell the master about your running off. If it wasn’t for Chu Hai’s poisoning, I presume you wouldn’t think of returning to the Sect."
"I just wanted to have a bit of fun before returning; how could I not go back home?" Diao Yao turned her head away, not wanting to look at Elder Wu, seemingly not very fond of him.
"I don’t have time to waste words with you; hurry and bring him back for treatment. Such a young man owes the Sect so much, and yet he still has the face to leave," Elder Wu commanded while waving to his disciples to carry the patient and continued to grumble.
Ultimately, once everyone had left, Bai Ruozhu felt much more relaxed. She turned her head and saw Bai Ruolan standing there, staring blankly at the Main Gate. Bai Ruozhu walked over, took Bai Ruolan by the hand, and asked softly, "Ruolan, what are you looking at?"
Bai Ruolan gave Bai Ruozhu a silly smile, "That beautiful person, so pretty!"
Bai Ruozhu suddenly felt a pang of discomfort in her heart; she was already married with a child, and Ruolan was even older than her. Under normal circumstances, she too would be betrothed by now, but it seemed unlikely that Ruolan would encounter her own happiness, unless her foolishness could be cured.
However, the brain is the most special part of the human body; damage here is very difficult to recover from.
After finishing her sentence, Bai Ruolan seemed to feel nothing and went off to play with a little maid. Bai Ruozhu watched her leave, thinking her carefree life, like that of a child, might also be a blessing in disguise.
Jiang Yichun heard that Chu Hai had left and instantly felt better, even starting to sweet-talk Bai Ruozhu.
"Wife, let’s go to sleep late tonight," Jiang Yichun whispered in Bai Ruozhu’s ear.
Bai Ruozhu rolled her eyes at him and said through gritted teeth, "Weren’t you acting all high and mighty these past two days? Hmph."
"Oh, holding a grudge now, are we?" Jiang Yichun smirked, then suddenly scooped Bai Ruozhu into his arms and tossed her onto the bed.
"You..." Bai Ruozhu was just about to scold him, but the words that followed were stifled, swallowed back down into her stomach.
Thus, Bai Ruozhu intended to revitalize her marital duty, but ended up being completely devoured by someone.
Two days later, Jiang Yichun came home and said to his family, "I’ve been assigned an external task by the higher-ups, guess what it is?"
"An assignment?" Perhaps because Jiang Yichun’s previous job at the Tongzheng Division had been too dangerous, Bai Yihong became nervous at once, "Why an assignment so soon after coming back? Isn’t that too exhausting?"
"Indeed, where to?" Lin Ping’er joined in as well.
But Bai Ruozhu, seeing Jiang Yichun’s smug expression, guessed it definitely wasn’t something bad.
"Could it be to Jiangnan?" Bai Ruozhu suddenly asked.
Jiang Yichun gave her a look of approval, "Correct, the Imperial Court has decreed an assignment, tasking me to lead a team to escort the students of Beiyu Study Palace to Jiangnan for a competition."
The moment Lin Ping’er heard this her eyes lit up; she had been worried about her second son being so far from home and unsure about his safety, but with her son-in-law leading the team, it would be reassuring to know there was someone to look after him.
Bai Zepei looked at Jiang Yichun and politely nodded, "Then I’ll be troubling my brother-in-law with the journey."
Bai Ruozhu, observing her second brother’s lukewarm demeanor, felt it strange. Weren’t they quite chummy behind the scenes when they conspired to sell her off? She almost thought they were the best of friends. But after Jiang Yichun’s identity was clarified, and it was confirmed he was her husband, her second brother seemed to find everything about Jiang Yichun disagreeable.
Could it be he felt he’d lost face because he hadn’t recognized Jiang Yichun was Chang Sheng? Or maybe Jiang Yichun had offended the second brother during his time as Chang Sheng?
With Jiang Yichun heading south, the whole family was happy, but soon Lin Ping’er realized a problem and hurriedly asked, "Is Ruozhu going too?"
Before Bai Ruozhu could respond, Jiang Yichun interjected, "This assignment allows me to bring family."
"I haven’t decided to go yet!" Bai Ruozhu hastily said, "I’ve only just come home a few days ago, and if my second brother is going on a long trip, and I go too, then wouldn’t that leave our parents very lonely?"
She cautiously looked at her mother, her heart unwilling to leave home even more.
After thinking for a while, Lin Ping’er instead suggested, "Let Ruozhu go with you. Yichun might be too busy to look after your second brother, so you could help take care of him. It would also be nice company for Yichun."
Her smile was quite suggestive; Bai Ruozhu could roughly guess that her mother was eager to have another granddaughter.
"I’ll think about it and let you know," said Bai Ruozhu.
Jiang Yichun watched Bai Ruozhu grinding her teeth in annoyance. Was this woman really so heartless? Didn’t she worry about being separated from him? Or about the possibility of him being tempted by the beauties of Jiangnan once he traveled south? He secretly resolved that he must make Bai Ruozhu aware of how important he was to her, to start worrying about him, even to realize that the outside world was full of temptations, and that she would be in great danger if she didn’t keep an eye on him!
As the family was caught up in mundane chatter, there came a knock on the door, followed by Jianqi entering the Yard, briskly walking up to Bai Ruozhu and kneeling on one knee, saying, "Master, I have returned."
Bai Ruozhu was delighted to see Jianqi back; with him around she could save herself a lot of worry. She smiled as she reached out to help Jianqi up, asking, "Did you find the sword?"
Jianqi’s expression wasn’t too good, and as Bai Ruozhu looked down, she noticed that he wasn’t wearing his sword.
