Chapter 542: Chapter 544: Fool, didn’t I come back?

Wu Wanqing considered herself an upper-class girl, maintaining a gentle smile on her face, but no matter how one looked at it, it seemed somewhat unnatural.

Bai Ruozhu walked over confidently, smiling, "Thank you for the clothes, Miss Wu."

"You risked helping my third brother deliver a message, I should repay you on his behalf." Wu Wanqing replied indifferently. She was very polite, and the tone of her words showed her closeness to Jiang Yichun.

Bai Ruozhu’s smile was tinged with a hint of amusement. She had straightforwardly questioned Jiang Yichun, therefore Wu Wanqing’s few sentences would not hurt her. Perhaps Wu Wanqing never imagined that she would directly confront Jiang Yichun?

Therefore, Bai Ruozhu’s thinking differed from that of most women of this era. She preferred to take the initiative and control her own destiny, which made her quite unique.

"You should rest for a while. I’ll have someone come and get you for dinner." Seeing Bai Ruozhu still smiling, Wu Wanqing felt a bit uncomfortable and decided to leave.

Bai Ruozhu politely walked her to the door, saying, "Thank you for your trouble, Miss Wu."

As Wu Wanqing was about to turn around, her eyes fell on the front of Bai Ruozhu’s chest. Because of Bai Ruozhu’s good color, she felt somewhat uneasy, so she didn’t look elsewhere. It was only when she stepped out of the door that she noticed how tightly Bai Ruozhu dressed her chest with her clothes, but the waist was still loose.

The clothes were made specifically to fit her, yet now on Bai Ruozhu, didn’t this mean that Bai Ruozhu’s bust was fuller, and waist was thinner than hers?

This revelation made Wu Wanqing unable to stand it anymore, and she quickly left the guest room that was arranged for Bai Ruozhu.

The dinner was shared by Wu Yunfeng, Wu Wanqing, and Bai Ruozhu. However, Wu Yunfeng was not talkative, and Wu Wanqing was occupied with something, making the meal extremely quiet. Bai Ruozhu was not accustomed to this; she missed the lively scene of eating together with everyone in her yard. She desperately wanted to go home!

This thought made her lose her appetite, and she returned to her room in a foul mood after dinner. When could she get rid of Li Yi and return home to her son with peace of mind?

At night, she crawled into the quilt, lifted the quilt with her padded jacket, and then entered the space.

No one tried to assassinate her the whole night. She wasn’t sure if it was due to the proper protection of Wu Wanqing’s female guards so that Li Yi’s men couldn’t find an opportunity, or if Li Yi hadn’t planned to act yet from his side.

The next morning, Wu Wanqing called her to have breakfast. Wu Yunfeng was not there, presumably he had gone out early to arrange his affairs.

In the afternoon, Bai Ruozhu returned to her room to rest, and soon someone knocked on the door. A maid walked in, gave a bow and respectfully said, "Miss Bai, our young lady invites you to talk."

Bai Ruozhu’s eyes squinted slightly, she stood up and said, "Alright, I’ll go with you."

As she walked towards the maid, she suddenly felt a trip and she staggered forward, her hand inadvertently made contact with the maid. The maid’s eyes flashed with a wicked look, her palm transformed into a knife hand, and it seemed like she was about to strike Bai Ruozhu’s neck. However, before her hand landed, the fierce look in her eyes turned to one of terror, and she fell to the ground.

Bai Ruozhu didn’t dare to run out the door, she shouted in the room, "Help! There’s an assassin!"

The guards outside immediately burst in, only to see Wu Wanqing’s maid lying on the ground. She was unable to move even though her eyes were wide open.

"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and bind her. Also, check for any accomplices." Bai Ruozhu distanced herself from where the maid had fallen, as if fearing the maid might suddenly get up.

The guards snapped back to reality, detaining the maid and saying, "Take her to Miss for questioning."

One of the guard team leaders didn’t seem to completely trust it, he looked at Bai Ruozhu and asked, "Miss Bai, why do you say she’s an assassin? Did she attack you?"

"Didn’t she attack me? She had her hand in a blade form ready to strike down, I was lucky to have been alert. She told me that Miss Wu wanted to meet me, but as far as I know Miss Wu would come to me if she needed something and wouldn’t burden me. It’s very clear that the maid tried to trick me to catch me off guard so they could kidnap me." Bai Ruozhu uttered on impulse, glancing at the team leader. Were all maids beside young ladies good people? Was it not permitted for spies to be hiding around them?

Hearing this, the team leader didn’t dare to question further. He made a quick decision to take the maid away for questioning. Seeing this, Bai Ruozhu followed, and on her way, she reminded, "Quickly press her acupuncture points, in case she commits suicide by biting her tongue or swallowing poison. How would you get any information then?"

The team leader twitched his mouth and promptly pressed the maid’s acupuncture points.

Wu Wanqing had already received the news and hurried over from her courtyard. Even though she didn’t like Bai Ruozhu, she dared not disobey her father’s arrangements and wouldn’t allow any trouble under her watch.

"Didn’t expect the informant to be right by my side. Take this maid and interrogate her well in the torture chamber, and don’t let her die." Wu Wanqing said coldly, clearly angry that the spy was embedded right next to her.

After the maid was arranged, she looked at Bai Ruozhu and asked with concern, "Miss Bai, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"

Bai Ruozhu smiled at her, "I’m fine, she can’t fool me."

"Miss Bai is indeed a smart woman," Wu Wanqing complimented.

Neither of them talked much then, and they each returned to their rooms for a rest.

Wu Yunfeng didn’t appear all day, and Bai Ruozhu was very careful that night but didn’t encounter any more danger. She suspected that Li Yi didn’t spare any time to catch her and especially wanted to go home.

Speaking of Fusa, due to Bai Ruozhu’s sudden appearance and her instructions not to disclose anything, she was worried and didn’t sleep all night. The next day when she went to the shop, she looked around for a while, but there was no sign of Bai Ruozhu.

At noon on the third day, many people returned to the Wu Residence, making it busier than usual. Bai Ruozhu didn’t want to join the crowd and stayed in her room doing her crochet work.

She could only keep herself from pondering unnecessary thoughts by keeping busy.

After a while, it quieted down outside, but the sound of hurried footsteps approached. The room door was pushed open and a tall figure appeared in the doorway, suddenly entering Bai Ruozhu’s field of vision.

He pushed the door open and stood in the doorway looking at her. The sunlight shone down from above his head, casting a halo of gold over him, like a god descending from heaven.

Because he was standing with light behind him, Bai Ruozhu had difficulty clearly seeing his face. She blinked hard, thinking she had seen incorrectly, until he walked towards her, step by step, grabbed her hand, and pulled her into his arms for a tight hug - then she finally believed that she hadn’t seen wrong. He really returned safe and sound!

"Dummy, why are you crying? Haven’t I safely returned?" Jiang Yichun gently said into her ear.

Bai Ruozhu touched her eyes and realized that tears were streaming down her face.
