Chapter 488: Chapter 490: Crying as if Life and Death
"I can’t believe how you even tolerate jealousy over your own benefactor," Fang Guizhi said, laughing as she spoke.
"Right, he likes Little Dengdeng, and Little Dengdeng likes him too. Isn’t that a good thing?" Wan Caiyue chimed in.
Bai Ruozhu blushed as the two of them teased her. She shouldn’t have indulged these two gossips. She must have been loopy to even entertain them.
Just as they were speaking, footsteps echoed from outside. Bai Ruozhu peeked out to see Jiang Yichun walking over, Little Dengdeng in his arms.
"Ruozhu, Little Dengdeng is looking for you." Jiang Yichun walked over and passed Little Dengdeng back into her arms.
Little Dengdeng wrapped his arms around Bai Ruozhu’s neck, nuzzling towards her chest. It looked like he was genuinely hungry.
Was Bai Ruozhu really capable of staying upset with her own child? Even if she was petty, she couldn’t bear to see her child go hungry. She nodded slightly towards Jiang Yichun and carried Dengdeng back to her own room.
Jiang Yichun paid no mind to Wan Caiyue and Fang Guizhi and went straight back into the Main Hall.
Once he was gone, Fang Guizhi patted her chest, "Sister-in-law, why do I always feel scared every time I see him? He’s different around Ruozhu and Dengdeng, but towards us, he’s always so icy."
Wan Caiyue chuckled quietly, "What’s scary about someone who treats Ruozhu and Dengdeng well? He simply has a cold personality."
Bai Ruozhu had just finished nursing Dengdeng and went back to the Main Hall when Dengdeng wanted Jiang Yichun to hold him again. Bai Ruozhu, speechless, went back to the kitchen to cook. By the time noon arrived and Bai Zepei returned, as expected, Jiang Yichun found an excuse to go into a private room to discuss some issues. Bai Zepei looked very serious by the time they finished.
Sitting at the men’s table, Jiang Yichun held the very conspicuous little Dengdeng. Little Dengdeng kept fiddling with his mask, his chin, and things on the table. Despite this, Jiang Yichun never lost his temper, but simply put things back quickly and quietly warned him about safety.
The scene of their benefactor treating Bai Ruozhu unusually, revealed through his interactions with Dengdeng, seemed to become the norm for the Bai family. If it were not the love for the child, why would he be so patient with Dengdeng?
A grin spread across Lin Ping’s face. A man who was good to Ruozhu and who sincerely cherished Dengdeng, was like a model husband who was terribly hard to find.
Jiang Yichun ate a lot at lunch, especially Bai Ruozhu’s dishes. After the meal, he drank some nourishing soup, feeling so full he could burp at any second. Thinking about his future life, with a wife and child, and a wife with superb cooking skills, he felt his life was totally worth it.
Unfortunately, he still couldn’t tie her to his side and wouldn’t allow her to leave him for a single moment. And he was unable to propose marriage to her family just yet. Despite spending a long time searching, he still couldn’t find that damned Chang Sheng.
Remarrying within three years of one’s husband’s disappearance violated societal norms. If anyone wished to stir up trouble over this or if Chang Sheng suddenly returned and made a fuss, it could bring ruin to Bai Ruozhu and the Bai family’s reputation.
Jiang Yichun mentally resolved that as soon as the bandit hunting mission ended, he would send all his men to search for Chang Sheng. He must find that man as soon as possible!
Not long after eating, Jiang Yichun said goodbye to Bai Yihong and Lin Ping, handed little Dengdeng back to Bai Ruozhu. He looked deeply into her eyes before turning to leave.
Bai Ruozhu knew he was leaving. This visit was an unexpected one, he still had to take care of the situation at Xuantian Mountain. But her heart ached a little. How long would it be before he could come see her again?
She didn’t know when she began to feel a placeholder in her life for him, as though not seeing him every day made her feel uneasy. Especially late at night when everything was quiet, she would miss him horribly. The longing was like slow-acting poison, gnawing at her heart; only his presence, the antidote, could alleviate it.
Bai Ruozhu was not the type to sink into melancholy, so even though she missed him, she wouldn’t talk about it, let alone let her longing for him make her languish. He has his duties, and she has her ambitions. Both were working hard for the day when they could grow old together, hand in hand.
Unfortunately, little Dengdeng was not as understanding as his mother. Seeing Jiang Yichun leave, he burst into tears. The cry was so pitiful, as if it was a child’s reluctance to see their parents leave. It made everyone in the yard feel that Dengdeng must really like the grown-up man.
Seeing her child crying so hard he was like a little tear person, Bai Ruozhu’s heart ached. She held Dengdeng and walked around the backyard to soothe him, even taking him to ride a horse. But Dengdeng still cried for a long time, finally falling asleep due to exhaustion.
She sighed silently. Her son had never cried that hard before. Could it be because he rarely saw Jiang Yichun and therefore missed him so much? But she couldn’t figure it out. After all, Jiang Yichun was not his biological father. Was this deep affection really necessary?
She carried Dengdeng back to the room, lying down on the bed for a while. Upon waking up, Lin Ping informed her that the steward from the Xie Residence had visited earlier, and Yu Hongxiu had helped inquire about a small shopfront for rent and asked her to find time to look at it.
Bai Ruozhu was thrilled upon hearing the news, but considering the late hour, didn’t want to bother Yu Hongxiu so late and instead began to discuss the idea of setting up the shop with her family.
"Did you give the headpiece to Old Lady Meng?" Fusa asked.
Bai Ruozhu laughed embarrassedly, "There was a sudden emergency with one of the guards that day and I forgot to deliver it."
In fact, when she first arrived at the Meng Residence, she was busy making signature grilled chicken. Later, when she thought about presenting it to the old lady, Wang Miaoshuang derailed the whole situation and both the old lady and she no longer felt in the right mood. She planned to deliver it a day later, but it just fell through.
"It’s okay, you can deliver it next time. Old Lady Meng must have seen a lot of fancy things, I’m not sure if they will meet her taste.", Fusa anxiously said.
Bai Ruozhu smiled and said, "I’ve already sent a letter to Mrs. Ding, and Mrs. Li will be coming over in a few days. They also want to order from us. They’ve spoken highly of us to many ladies in Beiyu City, and I’m sure they’ll introduce us."
The listeners heaved a sigh of relief. If the crochet shop could be established, they wouldn’t have to be so on edge.
Bai Ruozhu asked everyone to bring out the little hats, headbands, and gloves they’ve made recently. After looking at the quantity of the items, she thought they were enough to start a shop, but still not enough. If they became popular, they might quickly sell out.
After thinking for a while, she took out some paint and drew some patterns, saying to the others, "We shouldn’t aim for mass production. There’s only so many of us, we can’t work ourselves to death. Let’s take the high-end boutique route."
