Chapter 433: Chapter 433: The Nose is Too Sensitive
Bai Ruozhu saw her suddenly want to take a taste, assuming she was not contented with what she had said. The owner’s wife, frustrated after having a taste, returned the uneaten dimsum to the tray, turned, and shouted towards the back room: "Hey dear, are you courting death? The green bean cakes which the naughty Tom deliberately added an excessive amount of sugar to, weren’t they supposed to be taken out? You wouldn’t be thinking of ruining our business, would you?"
During this dialogue, a middle-aged man, donned in an apron, hurriedly walked out with a face full of ashamed and helpless look. He asked, "How did you, Tom’s mother, find out?"
"The customers realized that you added heaps of sugar into it. I have no idea how many you have sold!" The shop owner’s wife placed both hands on her waist, glaring at him.
"Hold on, don’t be mad. I swear by your words and separately place that basket aside. Unfortunately, Tom, that naughty boy, mixed some into the big bowl. I discovered it too late and had no clue how to pick it out, and thus, I dared not speak." Towards the end, the man’s voice grew smaller. He looked at his wife with resignation, just like a pitiful fellow.
Bai Ruozhu finally understood. The husband in this family was the master dimsum maker while his wife managed the business. However, a naughty child at home caused havoc, resulting in an overly sweetened batch of green bean cakes. The owner’s wife was adamant not to sell them and was probably thinking of keeping them for her own consumption. However, the mischievous child managed to mix the overly sweetened cakes with the ones for sale. And by sheer coincidence, Bai Ruozhu tasted one of them.
As they were speaking out in the open, those inside the back room definitely couldn’t hear them. The owner’s wife had no reason to put on a show for Bai Ruozhu’s minor opinion. So, this was really happening. The coincidence was so amusing that Bai Ruozhu felt like laughing.
"Stop spewing nonsense, go and pick out the overly sweetened ones quickly. Otherwise, we’ll end up ruining our business," the shop owner said, stamping her foot in anger.
Her husband looked troubled, "If I could pick them out, I would have done so long ago. How could I possibly have been so lazy? It’s not like we could taste each and every piece, could we?"
The shop owner glared at him, seemed indecisive, but finally gritted her teeth, "Let’s get rid of all these green bean cakes. If we can’t pick out the overly sweetened ones then let’s not sell them at all, even if we incur a loss. Our pastries should not be criticized for being overly sweetened."
Bai Ruozhu secretly gave a thumbs-up to the owner’s wife. This elder sister was really bold. There was still quite a good deal of green bean cakes in the dresser. Disposing all of them will incur a significant loss.
Actually, the sugar is only slightly excessive. It’s not at the point of becoming sickeningly sweet. The customers would not object too harshly either. However, her attitude towards the product was admirable. Even if it meant not making any profit, she would never compromise the pastry’s quality. This was her dedication to maintain the reputation of the business.
The male shop owner sighed helplessly upon hearing this and then went on to remove the green bean cakes from the container. He obediently followed the words of his wife and would not sell them anymore.
Only then did the shop owner’s wife recall Bai Ruozhu and quickly turned back to her. Wearing a forced smile, she said, "I have to thank you for this. If we hadn’t noticed the error, our customers would think the quality of our dimsum had declined. Come, let me give you another piece."
Bai Ruozhu smiled and asked, "What if most of the overly sweetened green bean cakes have already been sold and you’ve taken down the good green bean cakes? Will it be such a pity?"
The owner’s wife had already cut another piece of green bean cake for Bai Ruozhu. Biting her teeth, she said, "That’s is just too bad. It’s our fault for not being careful during the preparation."
Bai Ruozhu accepted the freshly cut green bean cake and took a mouthful. Yes, like the owner’s wife said, the sweetness was just right, and it tasted of green beans.
She cradled Dengdeng, who was still spinning the windmill toy, her arms while she said to the owner’s wife, "To dispose of all these is really quite a pity. How about I help you with this? I have a very sensitive sense of smell. The taste of the green bean will be affected by excessive sugar, and I should be able to smell it out."
Tom’s dad was ready to remove the pastries. But listening to the words of Bai Ruozhu, his eyes lit up. Regardless of whether Bai Ruozhu could really nose it out, there was no harm in giving it a shot.
The shop owner’s wife looked at Bai Ruozhu with astonishment, asking, "You wouldn’t be a pastry maker, would you?"
Bai Ruozhu could not help but let out a giggle, "No, my family does sell food at other places, but it’s not dimsum. I am a medical student, often smell herbal medicine, hence my sensitive nose."
Tom’s dad, no longer able to stand the wait, picked a piece of green bean cake with chopsticks and placed it into a small dish, passed it to Bai Ruozhu, and said, "Miss, please give us a hand."
The owner’s wife also added, "It is a trouble for you. Later on, I’ll give you some green bean cakes."
Without refusal, Bai Ruozhu directly sniffed the green bean cake. After the very first piece, she shook her head and said, "This one is fine."
Tom’s dad quickly placed it into a clean basket and picked up another piece for Bai Ruozhu. She smelled that one too, and it was perfect. She frowned and said, "Hand over two pieces at once, it would be faster that way."
"Sure." Tom’s dad passed over two pieces next time, Bai Ruozhu continued sniffing, until the fifth batch, when she finally found an overly sweetened one. She pointed at it, signaling to the owner’s wife to pick it out.
The shop owner’s wife, with curiosity, squeezed a little out to taste. Her face lit up involuntarily, "Indeed, this one has too much sugar. Your nose is really impressive!"
Bai Ruozhu touched her nose and couldn’t stop from giggling. Why did having a sensitive nose make her feel dog-like? However, ever since she found the spatial pool, whether it was because she often ate seafood or often drank water from the Spatial Pond, her senses of sight, hearing, smell, and taste have all become excellent. Even her reflexes were much better than in her previous life.
In a short while, more customers arrived. They moved closer out of curiosity to figure out what was going on. The owner’s wife didn’t hide anything and revealed the whole situation about them mistakenly adding too much sugar to a batch of green bean cakes. Once the customers heard that Bai Ruozhu was assisting with her nose, they stopped making orders. Instead, they stood at the side curiously watching.
As a result, by the time Bai Ruozhu smelled through all the pastries and looked around, she discovered that the shop was surrounded by a large crowd of onlookers. She touched her nose awkwardly. Oh no, she had become a spectacle, like a rare animal.
One of the customers, eyes glittering, shouted to the shop owner’s wife, "Ma’am, let us have a taste of the green bean cakes that she sniffted out as over sugary. And also let us sample those that are not overly sweet too. Let us witness this spectacle."
Bai Ruozhu in total sniffed out eleven overly sweetened green bean cakes. Since these could not be sold anymore, the shop owner wasn’t stingy at all and quickly cut them into small pieces for everyone to taste. She also cut out the perfectly sweetened cakes for everyone to sample as well.
"Hey! Indeed, any small difference in the sugar greatly affects the taste. Never realized the art of pastry-making involved so much learning," someone said, astonished.
There was also someone who looked towards Bai Ruozhu, gave a thumbs-up, and said, "This young lady really has an extraordinary nose, it’s absolutely amazing!"
The shop owner’s wife gratefully nodded at Bai Ruozhu. Swiftly packing a big bag of just nicely sweetened green bean cakes, she also picked several other dimsum types, packing them into another bag and handed it all to Bai Ruozhu, "Miss, thank you very much. These are just some of our dimsums as a token of our gratitude, you can’t decline it."
