Chapter 1214: Chapter 1216: Can’t Escape the Inevitable_1
Princess Diao Bin almost immediately revealed a look of delight upon seeing Ning Yu. Her eyes were filled with joy and adoration. Having someone she cherished herself, Bai Ruozhu easily recognized the Princess’s feelings.
However, the worry on Ning Yu’s face was too evident—there must be something going on between these two!
But Princess Diao Bin quickly turned her head away and covered her face with a handkerchief, saying, "I don’t want to see anyone; you needn’t come to see me again."
Pain flashed across Ning Yu’s eyes. Bai Ruozhu sighed watching from the side. Which woman would want the man she loves to see her at her worst? She could understand Princess Diao Bin’s current emotions, but Ning Yu, the foolish lad, lacked such perception.
"Let me take a look at the Princess—perhaps I can find a way to alleviate it a bit," Ning Yu said.
Tears brimming in her eyes, Diao Yao stepped forward, took Princess Diao Bin’s hand, and said, "Sister Diao Bin, don’t be like this; you will get better for sure."
Suddenly, Ning Yu reached out and grabbed Diao Yao’s arm. His movements were quick, and his expression resolute; the sudden action caught Bai Ruozhu and the Empress Dowager off guard.
He was certainly in a panic, but shouldn’t he have grabbed Princess Diao Bin’s hand instead?
But in the next moment, Bai Ruozhu inwardly cursed, "Damn," realizing Ning Yu had caught on!
"What is that on your hand?" Ning Yu asked, his voice unusually cold, as if Diao Yao were his enemy.
Princess Diao Bin was startled too and looked at Ning Yu, asking, "Young Master Ning, what’s gotten into you?"
Ning Yu didn’t answer Princess Diao Bin, his gaze still fixed intently on Diao Yao. Diao Yao, not yet nervous, tried to shake off Ning Yu’s rigid hold; unfortunately, while her martial arts were good, Ning Yu’s were better, and she was unable to break free.
At that moment, Bai Ruozhu noticed a string of black beads on Diao Yao’s wrist. The beads were not large, but every single one was rounded and glossy, seemingly made of ’Min Yu’ material, but upon closer inspection, Bai Ruozhu saw them as just an ordinary string of Min Yu beads without anything special about them.
"This is a token left by my mother; what about it? Do you recognize it?" Diao Yao suddenly showed a hopeful expression, genuinely unaware of her own origins.
Bai Ruozhu frowned. She remembered from the information Jiang Yichun had gathered that when Diao Yao was abandoned at the doorstep of the Bihai Sect, she only had a Jade Pendant related to her identity. How then did this string of beads come into play?
"Who is your mother? Why does this string of beads carry curse power? I was wondering why the Princess’s curse suddenly acted up—it turns out you were behind it all!" Ning Yu accused loudly as he tightened his grip on Diao Yao’s wrist.
Bai Ruozhu wanted to signal Ning Yu with her eyes to stop talking, but Ning Yu was furious and oblivious to her, and why should she have any reason to help him hide the truth?
He didn’t know Chu Hai and Diao Yao; he had no relationship with them at all. Why should he help them?
The Empress Dowager was shocked, disbelieving as she looked at Diao Yao, "How can this be? This, this can’t be true, can it?"
Princess Diao Bin was also greatly astonished, but she quickly shook her head, "Impossible, Diao Yao is like a sister to me, her affection can’t be fake. Ning Yu, could you have mistaken?"
"I’m not mistaken; this string of beads is indeed related to the Princess’s curse." Ning Yu still gripped Diao Yao’s arm, on guard in case she suddenly fell from grace and attempted to hurt the Princess.
Diao Yao looked at Ning Yu and then at the princess before she suddenly burst into tears, and while crying she said, "How could I ever harm Sister Diao Bin? I genuinely don’t know anything about a curse. I was abandoned at the doorstep of the Bihai Sect when I was just a few months old. I have no idea who my parents are. All I know is that my mother left me a jade pendant and a bracelet as a token, and she told me if anything unexpected happened, to wear the bracelet and continuously rub it to generate heat. While I was locked up, I thought someone would come and rescue me. I don’t understand what’s happening."
Bai Ruozhu’s head spun with rapid thoughts. The news from Jiang Yichun’s side mentioned nothing about a bracelet, and she had spent quite a bit of time with Diao Yao but had never seen her wearing the bracelet, especially since she practiced martial arts and almost never wore anything on her wrists. Could it be that the bracelet was hidden before and only recently worn?
If it were a jade pendant hung around her neck, it would be reasonable, but if the bracelet wasn’t worn, how could it happen to be on her person when she was abducted?
"Hao Mu, seize Diao Yao. If she is innocent, I myself will restore her reputation," the Empress Dowager ordered with a stern face. Even if she was usually amicable, now that her daughter’s life was at stake, how could she indulge such a threat?
Hao Mu stepped forward and grasped Diao Yao firmly. For safety’s sake, he also sealed Diao Yao’s acupoints to immobilize her.
"Empress Dowager, it really isn’t me, this is what my mother gave me to save my life..." Diao Yao cried out.
"Then after you used it, were you saved?" Ning Yu interrupted, "If it truly is a life-saving treasure, why would you still be waiting for the Empress Dowager to come to your rescue?"
"And if I really were the person harming Sister Diao Bin and my goal had been achieved, why wouldn’t I flee?" Diao Yao’s response wasn’t slow; she quickly found the inconsistency in the situation.
Ning Yu wanted to speak further, but Bai Ruozhu interrupted him, "There’s a problem with this."
She looked at Diao Yao and asked, "Is this bracelet genuinely the token your mother left for you? But we lived together for so long before, why have I never seen you wearing it? Do you remember where you used to keep it?"
Princess Diao Bin also chimed in, "Yeah, I’ve never seen you wear it either."
Diao Yao’s face showed confusion as she struggled to think, as if there was some problem with her head.
"Ning Yu, could she be under the influence of the Soul-Bewitching Technique? Like someone forcefully implanted a piece of memory in her, and she never actually had this bracelet." Bai Ruozhu inquired.
Ning Yu also calmed down by now. Suddenly, he reached out and pressed a few points on Diao Yao’s hand, then took out a talisman, recited a chant, and attached it to Diao Yao’s forehead. The talisman spontaneously combusted without fire, burning right on Diao Yao’s forehead, startling both Princess Diao Bin and the Empress Dowager.
When the talisman turned to ashes, it hadn’t harmed Diao Yao at all, not even singeing her eyebrows or eyelashes.
"Indeed, she has been subjected to the Soul-Bewitching Technique. Someone used her," Ning Yu declared.
Princess Diao Bin let out a huge sigh of relief; she also did not believe in her heart that Diao Yao was there to harm her.
"But..." Ning Yu’s tone shifted, his voice cooling down a few notches, "If a mere bracelet could trigger the princess’s curse, the perpetrator could have done it themselves. Why delegate the curse execution to Diao Yao?"
Diao Yao felt some fear inside and hesitantly said, "How, how would I know."
"Because the bracelet is supposed to trigger a pre-existing curse, not something any ordinary person could accomplish. It must be the curse caster themselves, or a blood relative," Ning Yu spoke loudly, "That’s why the bracelet needed to be worn on your wrist, required you to rub it hot!"
Bai Ruozhu felt a thud in her heart, it was over, Ning Yu had seen through it. It seemed there was no way to escape the inevitable.
