Chapter 1184: Chapter 1186: Falling into a Trap, Old Friend to the Rescue_1
Jiang Yichun took out a brocade box, thought for a moment, then still took out the pill from the box and popped it into his mouth.
His eyes sparkled with determination, and soon he would be able to see the woman he loved.
...
"Achun..." Bai Ruozhu called out in a start from her dream. She sat in the empty room, momentarily unsure of her whereabouts. It took her a while to gather her strength and remember that she had left her family, her child, to come to Wuyuan City in search of Jiang Yichun. This place was an inn in Wuyuan City.
"Achun, where exactly are you?" she murmured. Her heart clenched in pain, for she had still not seen him. She had only heard about him through the Ghost Doctor, and finally having located this place, he had vanished into thin air. Didn’t he know she would come looking for him?
Feeling choked up, Bai Ruozhu got up to pour herself a glass of water. Footsteps sounded from outside, followed by Jianqi’s voice, "Master, are you awake?"
"I am awake, what is it?" Bai Ruozhu glanced outside the window, realizing it must be urgent to come at this late hour.
"We just received news that the Beggar Gang in Wuyuan City found a severely injured man, who is very likely to be the master’s son-in-law. Would the master like to go and see?" As soon as Jianqi finished speaking, Bai Ruozhu’s room door swung open, and she dashed out.
"Let’s go," she said, her robes wrinkled from wearing them even in sleep for convenience over the past few days. So upon hearing Jianqi’s words, she rushed out immediately.
Jianqi glanced at her, turned to get a cloak from inside the room, and handed it to her, saying, "Master, the night is chilly, take care of yourself. Otherwise, the old master and the master’s son-in-law will both be worried."
The "old master" he referred to was Lin Zhenghui. Bai Ruozhu took the cloak, thinking that if her master were here, maybe he would have a better solution. Indeed, she still had so much to learn—how was she to follow in her master’s footsteps?
She quickly wrapped the cloak around herself and followed Jianqi out, where Lü and the others were waiting. Upon her appearance, they immediately set off toward the dilapidated temple in the City South.
Approaching the temple, one could see beggars scattered here and there. Although the new year had passed, it was still bitterly cold, and many beggars huddled in corners, looking pitiful.
Even as Bai Ruozhu shifted her gaze, she noticed an old beggar who had already frozen to death nearby—likely to go unnoticed until days later.
The thought of Achun being injured and stranded in such a place wrung pain in her heart. She wished she could take him away immediately.
The group skirted around the beggars who were still awake and cautiously entered the temple. The temple may indeed be called such, but it was in ruins; wind leaked through the walls on all sides. It was hardly warmer inside than out, hence a small fire had been kindled in one corner.
Bai Ruozhu and her companions searched around the temple and found a man curled up in a corner on the other side. His clothes, though tattered, were unmistakably the style Jiang Yichun had worn!
"Achun!" Bai Ruozhu called out softly, rushing over in her excitement. She had finally found him!
She crouched down to lift his head. Before his face could be seen, a Dark Arrow shot towards her—it was spat out from his mouth!
"Be careful!" Jianqi shouted, but it was too late. A Steel Needle pierced into Bai Ruozhu’s shoulder blade, narrowly missing her throat, which would have taken her life outright.
"Damn it, we’ve been tricked," Lü cursed, but by then, they were already encircled. The beggars who had been huddled in corners were nowhere near beggar-like; they were actually a group of formidable henchmen.
Bai Ruozhu clutched her shoulder, feeling waves of dizziness coming from her head. She knew that the Steel Needle was poisoned and tried to take a Detoxifying Pill, but the impostor Achun clamped down on her wrist, leaving her unable to move.
She bitterly smiled in her heart, realizing that only those involved are truly blinded. She was overly eager to find him; otherwise, how could she have fallen for such a trick?
Having been in distress for so many days, how could Achun still be wearing his original clothes? She had clearly seen Nianrong buying clothes for Achun, yet she overlooked such an obvious flaw. She really deserved it.
Bai Ruozhu pulled the corner of her mouth into a smile, ordering Furball to bite the man, and finally got the chance to eat a detoxifying pill.
Jianqi was anxious to help her but was entangled by enemies and couldn’t break away to rescue her, but unexpectedly, the person holding her captive suddenly collapsed, and Jianqi finally heaved a sigh of relief.
At this moment, Chiyou, wearing a mask, appeared; without a doubt, he was the mastermind behind the trap.
"Surrender quietly," Chiyou said loudly. "Bai Ruozhu has been poisoned with severe poison; without my antidote, her death is certain."
Jianqi and the others were stunned for a moment, unsure of what to do next.
"Don’t believe him, I can detoxify myself," Bai Ruozhu said after a glance; the enemy outnumbered them and had the advantage of being prepared.
Upon hearing her words, Jianqi and the others were put at ease, but Chiyou ignored them all, vanishing in a blink and rushing towards Bai Ruozhu.
"Master, be careful!" Jianqi shouted, rushing to protect Bai Ruozhu, but he was stabbed by the enemy he was entangled with, his sleeve immediately soaking with blood.
Bai Ruozhu inwardly cursed her own hastiness; if she hadn’t sent Furball to bite the man just now, she could have bitten this mastermind. But in a bid to control the poison’s spread fast, she had Furball bite the imposter Jiang Yichun.
Now poisoned, her movements had slowed, and she was completely unable to dodge Chiyou’s attacks.
It seemed she would fall into Chiyou’s hands again, but she had poison powder hidden in her hand inside her sleeve, ready to take him down with her if it came to that!
Suddenly, an elderly figure appeared like a ghost, striking Chiyou with a palm. However, he didn’t linger to fight and rushed to grab Bai Ruozhu, throwing two smoke bombs at Chiyou and the others.
"Retreat quickly!" the elderly voice commanded, and Jianqi and the others saw the old man and Bai Ruozhu were already gone.
Knowing the old man was neither friend nor foe, Jianqi and the others seized the chaos to break out of the encirclement.
"Elder, thank you so much. Otherwise, my chances today would have been slim," Bai Ruozhu exclaimed, surprised as she looked at Elder Shougu, who was swiftly carrying her away. She hadn’t expected to encounter him here.
Elder Shougu’s body trembled slightly, his gaze towards Bai Ruozhu filled with guilt and complexity. Bai Ruozhu noticed it and was somewhat puzzled, but as they were both fleeing, she didn’t feel it was the right time to ask more questions.
But soon, she realized Elder Shougu was losing their pursuers with the ghost masks and, at the same time, distancing them from Jianqi and the others. She grew even more suspicious, scrutinizing Elder Shougu closely and sensing an odd feeling within.
Finally, Elder Shougu took her through a hidden courtyard and into a room, finally setting her down.
Bai Ruozhu watched him warily and suddenly asked, "You’re not Elder Shougu. Who exactly are you?"
