A Wife for the Billionaire -
Chapter 140: SOFIA
Chapter 140: SOFIA
As I matched to the elevator, ignoring Vera’s venomous glare as she disappeared into Richard’s office, I couldn’t help but smile.
I didn’t even know why I was smiling, but I felt giddy. My life as entangled as it was, for perhaps the first time didn’t look so bad. My life now, felt unreal. From becoming the billionaire’s Personal Assistant to his weird, but kind offer for me to come live with him. Not to mention, I was to be traveling with him to fucking Hong Kong!
I’ve never been, but the prospect of going to some place new was always an exhilarating anticipation. It wasn’t just a new place, it homed a whole new culture, new people I have never been in their midst before, new things to learn, different perspectives to be learned and of course, I was to experience all this under the influence and affluence of Richard Wellington, who I may hate, but don’t mind calling him my boss. At least within my mind.
It wasn’t just about traveling, he was sorta taking me out tonight, to meet his friends, in another place or circle I’ve never been in. Not even in my dreams, have I reached for so high. A billionaire circle and lifestyle, not even close.
Don’t even get me started on the fact that I was going to change my entire wardrobe. Suddenly, I didn’t mind the billionaire’s haughtiness and his really pissing nature, these privileges will certainly make it all endurable.
The elevator was closing when I rushed to it, yelling,
"Wait!"
I suppose I could have waited for another ride, but I was so eager that I simply couldn’t. How could I possibly wait when I was going to read myself in various attires? What could be more interesting?
"Please hold the do–"
The words and my smile died away as I stared at Cole. He stared back, mouth agape. I had totally forgotten about him. In my swirl of recent events, he had been lost.
"Are you two just going to stare at each other or are we going to get moving?" Harry asked.
Like I was just pulled from a spell, I noticed him standing a few paces away from Cole. The bald middle aged man whom I had gone to a certain length to secure his job was donning a casual dim yellow tee over brown pants.
"Sorry" Cole and I said at about the same time.
Cole flushed, turning red with embarrassment. God, that face! Again, I found it hard to believe that a guy with that smile and looks could find it hard getting girls, surely it should be girls lining up for him. Even his shyness was cute.
"Good morning, Harry, I didn’t see you there" I said, as Cole scratched the back of his head, somewhat managing to look dreamy while doing so, his dusty blonde hair was now faded at the sides, heightening his sharp edges. His blue eyes trying not to lose themselves on me.
"Why would you when he’s here?" Harry asked, "So what are you doing here today? And don’t tell me you are just here to see the boss, because I won’t fall for it. You claim not to be employed in this company and yet everyday you are here"
I suppose I could tell him, after all he was bound to find out. Especially since it was going to be mentioned in the next Bogue issue. Even Cole was intrigued, though he was trying hard not to be obvious.
"Well, I guess I can tell you now it’s official. As of a few minutes ago, I became Richard’s personal assistant." I beamed, still standing by the doors of the elevator.
"Sorry what?" Cole blurted, right about the same time Harry echoed, "You say?"
I didn’t bother answering, their questions were expressions of shock, hardly worth answering, besides silence was always the best to handle such situations.
I was proven right when Harry said,
"Oh wait, you’re actually serious"
My smile and eager bob was answer enough.
"No shit." Harry said, coming to hold my hands, "Tell me everything, I mean everything"
"Is this why you’ve been ghosting me and ignoring my messages?" Cole asked, his tone cold enough to wipe my smile.
I hadn’t actually thought of him and what my new position means for us. I guess there was really nothing to talk about, I might not have taken his job, but that didn’t mean that I had changed. That I was now good. I’m still the same Sofia Blake and I will only end up breaking his kind heart.
And if I do, there’s a chance he might change. His kind heart might turn cruel because of my actions. Perhaps that’s exactly what happens to others, once kind souls and warm hearts, forced to become cold and cruel because of the actions of others committed against them.
I let my hands drop from Harry’s grip and walked past him to Cole. I wanted to maintain my cruelty, I was to be doing him a favor, but those blue eyes boring down on me, I just couldn’t.
"Yes," I found myself saying instead, "it’s part of it. But..."
"As cute as you two look together, but we gotta get moving. It’s already bad enough that we work five days a week, now with this Halloween Fundraiser ball, we have to work on a Saturday. Lots of invitations and speeches to be typed and printed. I want to be out of this place as early as possible. I had to cancel tons of plans to be here, but thanks to this boy’s" he gave Cole a little shoulder massage, "fast and accurate fingers, I might not have to cancel all my plans. So, Sofia dear, where are you headed?"
"Oh yes," I said, breaking free from the alluring spell of those blue eyes, "I’m going to meet Millie, apparently my wardrobe needs a touch of change."
"Dear, that’s an understatement, what your wardrobe needs is to be burnt to the last rags and tatters, no offense" the bald man said, unapologetically blunt.
"None taken. I just hope she will allow me to keep these new ones I will be receiving today" I said absentmindedly.
"Who’s she?" Cole blurted.
That was when I realized that indeed I had said too much. It was already too late to try and sweep it under the bed, so I adjourned.
"I will tell you if you promise to go out with me when I get back" I uttered, blurting out the first thing that came to mind. One can only imagine what would have happened if I had tried to tell him. I might’ve ended up spilling my guts, right to the ones I shouldn’t even mention.
"Just say yes so we can get moving" Harry chided when Cole appeared to be thinking on whether to accept or reject.
"Fine" he grumbled, "Fine, but you best have a good reason, and where exactly are you going to, that made you use the term ’when I get back’?"
"I don’t think she’s going anywhere," Harry said, "she just needs time to get accustomed to her new job, isn’t that right?" He asked me.
"Actually," I began, growing giddy at the mere thought of it, "I’m to be escorting Richard to Hong Kong, we leave tomorrow and I don’t know when we’ll be back, but I promise you I’ll text you and try to call as much as I can"
"Whatever, let’s just go" Harry said, pressing the descent button.
I didn’t expect the few seconds ride to end in silence, but that was exactly how it did. Harry didn’t say a word and neither did Cole, perhaps he was still doubting my motives.
We said our farewells after they left on the 40th floor.
Millie was having a bad day when I arrived.
"You twat, get me something complimenting not a color that will ruin the whole fucking thing, fuck!" She had told one of those under her, the poor guy scurried away, a pile of clothes he hugged to his bosom, his head bent like a soaked rat.
Millie was looking hot in her jade poly gown that hugged her curves. Her face even though scowled shone with a very accentuating makeup. Approaching her, I complimented on her looks, and without waiting for her to respond, I told her of my new position, Richard’s orders and my intention of picking out the clothes myself, after all she already had her hands full.
"Nonsense," she said after I was done. "This is exactly what I need to lighten up my mood, congratulations on the job. I would like to hear about it all, but not now, perhaps you could join me and the girls, Emily, your friend will also be there, for a drink this evening."
"Sorry I can’t, Richard is taking me somewhere and he said I need to dress slutty, the nerve"
"Uuh! Richard, first name basis and taking you out, get it girl"
"Oh no, it’s not like that" I said immediately, "we hate each other and he’s not really taking me out, he’s just introducing me to his friends"
"Uuh! Aaron Wald and Chadwick Ramsey, the heartbreak trio. That has never happened before. Girl, you will need to look your hottest, even if he hates you, his friends most certainly won’t"
"You think so?" I found myself asking, I didn’t even know why I asked that.
"Girl, have you seen yourself? You are smoking hot"
In spite of myself I blushed, but before I could thank her for the compliment, she was already flinging clothes at me. Drowning out my words with fabrics of all kinds.
