Chapter 30: Kill a beast
Raze and Joel walked quietly for a while, no one uttering any words, until finally, the ID cards in their pockets buzzed. They both simultaneously took their cards out and took a look at them.
The cards showed that they had entered the forest deep enough for the competition to start.
"Put your card into your strip, it’s safer there like the teacher said. We will be moving through things at a very fast pace, and you don’t want to lose it," Raze said. He took his own card over the strip, and with a single thought, the card was pulled in.
Joel did the same and stored his card inside. He walked closer to Raze and then asked,
"What do we do from here?"
"Survive. For the first day, you and I will strive for two things—survival and fighting beasts. A part of this survival is tied to the beasts.
Most unranked beasts are safe to eat because there is no mana in their systems, so no long processes are required for us to make use of their meat.
Luckily for us, this forest crawls with a lot of unranked beasts," Raze said.
Joel couldn’t understand why Raze was so eager to fight unranked beasts, but he didn’t question it at all. He quietly followed Raze.
Raze headed deeper into the forest, keeping his eyes open to make sure he caught any movements. But after a while of not seeing anything or any beasts, he decided to use spatial sense.
The pulse went out, but it was not wide enough to catch any beasts inside. However, it was able to catch some footprints.
The footprints looked like hooves, and they headed in the direction east from where Raze and Joel were. Raze immediately turned in that direction and started running.
Joel didn’t understand what was happening, but he knew one thing—if he didn’t want to die, he had to follow Raze. So he chased after Raze, though it was much harder considering his stamina.
Raze noticed that Joel was struggling, and a sick smile formed on his face. He increased his speed, forcing Joel to push himself more. His breathing was already in shambles, and his heart rate was through the roof.
When Joel thought he would pass out, Raze stopped. Raze stretched out his hand to stop Joel. Joel also stopped, bent over, and tried to catch his breath.
Raze turned to face Joel and raised his finger to his mouth. "Keep quiet and stay here."
He had finally seen the beast inside his range. It was some sort of hog-looking beast with pitch-black fur, four glowing red eyes, and a very long horn.
It stood at a full meter tall, which was huge considering.
Raze was eager to fight this beast, but he didn’t want it to run away, so he turned off his sense and used his veil. After going invisible, he carefully approached the beast.
He was getting within a good range, but then he stepped on a dry twig, and it snapped. The sound reached the beast’s ears, and it immediately looked up to see who had approached.
And as if it could sense Raze, it rushed toward him. Raze moved out of the way, and the hog rushed past, but then it caught a sharp break. It turned and faced where Raze had landed.
"It is predicting where I am based on where it last heard the sound. This is interesting," Raze said, a smile on his face.
He undid the veil, allowing himself to be seen by the beast. The beast seemed more vexed when it saw Raze. It immediately charged again, but as it got close, it slammed into an invisible wall and fell to the ground.
Raze then pointed out his hands and shot a spatial blade at the beast. The beast’s instincts screamed at it to run. It got up and tried to move, but it was too late—the spatial blade dug into its left thigh. Blood splashed out like a fountain.
Screeeeeech!
It let out a wild cry of pain, but it was not out of the fight yet. The wound was not deep enough to completely stop it from using that leg, so it charged at Raze again.
Raze felt like he wouldn’t get the best experience from the technique he was using, so with a thought, he pulled out the steel sword they were given and got ready to battle using his Phantom Blade technique.
The beast was about to slam into Raze, but then he set the sword at the right angle. The horn and the sword collided, and the beast was parried to the side, but the strength of the beast was enough to push Raze back a few steps.
He found his footing quickly and got ready again. The beast also turned and charged again. This time, Raze made sure to watch closely, and at the perfect time, he moved, dodging the charge and at the same time stabbing his sword into the back of the beast.
The sword dug really deep into the beast’s back. Using the motion of the beast, Raze was still able to pull the sword out. The beast tumbled and crashed.
Blood spewed out of its back. Raze had landed a fatal hit this time.
The beast couldn’t move after that. Raze walked to it, looked down at the struggling creature, raised his blade, and then plunged it into the chest of the beast, hitting the heart.

Raze looked at the notification and smiled. With how easy it was to kill this beast, he could use them to level up a lot.
He looked up and saw Joel hidden behind a tree. Joel had watched the whole fight, and his jaw was wide open in shock.
"What are you looking at from over there? Come and help me out," Raze said and snapped Joel out of his frozen state. Joel quickly ran to meet Raze.
