Chapter 135: 134 Willing to bet and admit defeat_1
Shen Jing went to watch the car race that night.
Liang Yingning had loved racing since she was young. She had even set up a car racing club, but later, she got busy with her career and disbanded it.
This time, she didn’t want to miss the chance to witness the spectacle of the ’Akina Mountain’ racing god.
Liang Yingning admired racers—a pure admiration for their driving skills.
Shen Jing was dragged to the side of the racetrack by Liang Yingning, swinging a glow stick and cheering for her idol.
What idol? Shen Jing had no idea. Handsome? His looks were a bit lacking.
When you’re young, you go crazy when you can. That’s just how it is. Who cares who wins in the end? Whoever looks pleasing, you throw your money at them to cheer them on. It’s like tossing around play money.
Before the age of twenty-three, she rarely indulged herself. Since meeting Zhou Luchen and his friends, she had found a new way of life: seeking spiritual satisfaction, indulging in material desires—superficial, yet happy. Simple, no worries.
"I like Multon! The decal on his car’s tail is awesome! Go, Multon!"
In the midst of the fun, Chen Yao’s voice suddenly interjected, shattering Liang Yingning’s good mood.
"Wow, you actually like someone at the Teletubby level?" Chen Yao glanced dismissively at Liang Yingning. "Planning to marry someone from abroad?"
Chen Yao’s presence wasn’t surprising; the sports car club catered to wealthy young masters like him, the kind who had more sports cars than their garages could hold.
"Who are you looking down on?" Liang Yingning shrugged. "Believe it or not, I could make him marry into my family."
Marry into her family? What an interesting new term.
Chen Yao clenched his fist, made a ’go for it’ gesture, and chuckled. "Congratulations, best wishes, and go for it, Boss Liang."
"Always looking down on people," Liang Yingning scoffed.
Chen Yao didn’t argue with her. He had simply spotted the two women in the noisy crowd and came over to say hello. "Sister Jing, what brings you out to play?"
Shen Jing’s attention was entirely on the racetrack. She responded perfunctorily, "Mr. Zhou isn’t home."
Chen Yao knew Mr. Zhou was busy. He said his goodbyes and turned to go have fun inside the club.
Just then, Liang Yingning grabbed Chen Yao’s sleeve, pulling him back. She then quickly withdrew her hand as if afraid of contamination. "Want to race me?"
Chen Yao sized her up from head to toe. "You’ve got guts."
Chen Yao was famously skilled at driving, but the Chen Family worried about him getting into racing accidents, so they didn’t condone him risking his life like this.
Tonight, however, was an exception.
Liang Yingning looked up at him. "Do you dare?"
Chen Yao smiled. "What do you want to bet? Your life, perhaps?"
"I don’t bet money; that’s illegal," Liang Yingning continued. "The loser has to grant one request from the winner. Whoever wins, makes the demand."
"Sounds good," Chen Yao said, turning his head but not forgetting to add, "Make sure you fasten your seatbelt. I won’t go easy on you."
She neatly tied her hair into a ponytail, securing it with a few hair ties. "I don’t need you to go easy on me."
Chen Yao chuckled softly. He happened to have some time to kill and was willing to indulge her.
The race was to take place on a dedicated professional track—a very basic straight-line course.
The lives of these young masters and ladies were precious. The club owner was so desperate to stop them from using the professional track that he nearly knelt and kowtowed, begging them not to.
Running the sports car club wasn’t easy. What if the Chen Family took offense? He desperately wanted to avoid upsetting them.
But the tempers of these young masters and ladies were such that they wouldn’t easily be swayed by the club owner’s earnest pleas.
They were young, arrogant, proud, and fearless.
The two, fearless to a fault, drove to the professional track with a silent, mutual understanding.
"One lap decides it," Liang Yingning declared.
Chen Yao didn’t seem to take it too seriously; he just nodded.
Liang Yingning paid him no mind, checked all the indicator lights and electronic controls, and gripped the steering wheel tightly.
Shen Jing found a small stool, sat on the curb, and snacked on sunflower seeds.
She trusted Liang Yingning’s driving; she’d ridden with this seasoned driver a few times.
The roar of engines erupted as the white and grey sports cars shot off simultaneously.
One driver was unruffled; the other, desperate to win, quickly fell far behind.
Ultimately, Liang Yingning leveraged her skilled cornering and overtaking maneuvers to swiftly pass Chen Yao’s car, closing the gap.
The crowd didn’t cheer; only Shen Jing celebrated Liang Yingning’s move.
Fifteen minutes later, Liang Yingning secured first place, defeating Chen Yao.
At the finish line, Young Master Chen leaned on the steering wheel of his grey sports car and smiled.
It didn’t matter. What outrageous demand could she possibly make? Ask for the stars from the sky? Though unlikely, it wasn’t impossible to try.
He looked out the car window. "Alright, Liang Yingning, what is it?"
Liang Yingning, leaning against her car door with her arms folded, grinned even more audaciously. "Walk home from here. Do you dare?"
Chen Yao’s smile vanished instantly. He muttered a string of curses aimed at Liang Yingning’s parents and her ancestors for eighteen generations.
His tender, fair skin... walking home? What a ridiculous idea!
"Save your crude words for yourself." Liang Yingning flicked her high ponytail with a finger. "A deal’s a deal. Only a dog goes back on its word."
She turned, her ponytail swaying in the night breeze, her carefree silhouette melting into the darkness.
Chen Yao didn’t watch her go. He averted his gaze and asked his bodyguard nonchalantly, "How many kilometers is it?"
"Eight kilometers. A normal walk would take a little over an hour," the bodyguard replied, adding, "Young Master, please don’t take it seriously. Miss Liang was just saying that in anger."
"A bet is a bet. I’ll consider it a fitness walk."
Chen Yao pushed open the car door, got out, and tossed the car keys to his bodyguard.
The bodyguard had no choice but to drive the car and follow him.
As Liang Yingning’s sports car sped away, she gunned the engine, roaring past Young Master Chen with a flourish.
This time, it was Liang Yingning who made a fist, giving him a ’go for it’ gesture, throwing his earlier words and actions right back at him.
"Congratulations, best wishes, and go for it, Young Master Chen!"
This young master, just like that one from the Zhou family, is proud, conceited, and can’t stand being defied. One wrong move, and he could ruin an opponent. Well, if they’re so defiant, let them suffer a bit and learn about the hardships of life.
Young Master Chen, that infamous daredevil, was renowned for his racing skills. How could he have lost? Who knows.
Chen Yao lit a cigar with his lighter and began his walk home, smoking as he went. His navy-blue shirt looked particularly dim and dull under the streetlights.
At 187 centimeters tall, he had a rather slender build. His skin was pale, a testament to a pampered upbringing financed by his family’s wealth. At twenty-seven, he still looked young, possessing the vibrant energy of a youth.
Still a youth? Not anymore.
As Liang Yingning’s sports car rounded a corner, bursts of her unrestrained laughter still carried back.
So, Sister Jing was also laughing at his defeat, huh?
Tired from walking, Chen Yao squatted at a street corner, smoking his cigar and taking a short rest.
His bodyguard offered him water, then a coat.
"It’s getting cool, Young Master. If you get sick, Madam and the Chairman will be worried again."
Chen Yao looked up. "You’re thirty-five. Ever thought about getting married?"
The bodyguard shook his head.
"What’s so great about getting married, anyway?" Chen Yao asked again.
The bodyguard said, "For love, it’s good enough. You lack nothing, Young Master. Most of the time, you don’t need to consider whether your partner will have to endure hardships with you. The Chen family will pave the way, provide support, and ensure your endeavors prosper. You simply need to be a respectable couple, uphold the Chen family’s prestige, and avoid bringing shame to the family name."
Chen Yao spat out a sharp rebuke, "You moron."
He was completely dismissive of marriage.
The bodyguard replied, "Those were Madam’s exact words. Also, Madam reminded you, Young Master, not to use coarse language, as it’s impolite. She said you’re due for a slap across the mouth when you get home."
"Get lost."
