Chapter 70: Finally Some Clues?

"So you are saying that the current investigation just ended up in a circle once more and before you all knew it, it ended up into a dead end once again?" Based on the tone of Alfred’s voice, it is clear he is furious at the incompetence of his men.

"I am sorry sir. We already utilized the help of some magicians but we still ended up in that state so we really can’t say anything aside from the bad news itself."

Alfred sighed as he slumped into his paperwork. Lately has been so hectic for him that even resting, he barely has time to do so.

After the disappearance of his wife, the court started to get messy and the control over everything started to fall apart. People who were all in favor of his wife’s ruling and control started to cause a stir and some have even started riots in different parts of the kingdom. He had no time to quell them personally so he had all of the soldiers deployed to solve them. Things didn’t go well starting that.

Not only the situation is getting bad but also on his end as well. Ever since the parents of Elaina started to visit the castle, it became something of a regular reminder for him to find his wife as soon as possible by any means necessary just to avoid the ire of his in-laws who seem to have started their standalone investigations to find Elaina. It is so frequent now to the point that he is starting to get pissed as well.

Ever since he started to get the investigations running, all of the clues that they find have started to circle back and forth from something crucial into something useless, then back to the beginning point where they started. Alfred started to hate this kind of event now as not only it delays everything but he has to use resources just to end up wasted on an investigation that has no link to the disappearance of her wife or if it is indeed a link, Elaina is just so good at confusing those who wanted to look for her and manipulating clues.

Due to this, he started to realize that he never fully knew the capabilities of his wife and if he did, he just took it for granted, which now resulted in Elaina reversing the situation for him which ended up as a disadvantageous event for Alfred. It is to the point where he knows more things about Selena herself than Elaina. He kind of hated himself for not knowing beforehand but it was too late now and all he could do was just use this chance to find her. Once he finds her, asks her again to fix the relationship that Alfred has broken.

"Hah, then? Why are you still standing here? Aren’t you done?" Alfred asked the guard who was still there even after he finished his report.

"Actually sir, I am still not done with the report. But because you suddenly went quiet and for some reason, started reminiscing, I decided to just keep quiet at first and let you do your thing sir. I don’t want to disturb your..." before he could finish, Alfred threw a crumpled paper at him.

"Pah, continue your report. You better make sure this is something worth my time."

"Sir, remember when I said that the mages that we hired are helping with the investigations? It seems that they finally got a few clues regarding the Empress herself. Although it doesn’t point out where she is exactly, it seems that the clues they have found are now clear that the Empress is no longer in the kingdom and is more likely to be outside your jurisdiction and ruling. They are still investigating and gathering clues on where she might have gone through but for now, it is safe to assume that she has used the boat to leave the kingdom."

Hearing the result, Alfred stood up from his seat. His eyes brighten up.

"If that is the case, send people to investigate the pier and collect clues there. Interrogate everyone who works there and ask for their testimonies. Although I don’t believe that she would voluntarily leave like that, we can’t rule out the possibility that she has indeed left the kingdom. If that is the case, I will personally sail through the ocean and find her myself."

"Yes sir!" the guard saluted and left the room after his report.

The report just now made Alfred gain a lot of confidence once more that he will find his wife once more. He will not stop until he gets her back. And although he believes that his wife remained in the kingdom, he can’t rule out the possibility that she has indeed left the kingdom. However, that leads him to some questions.

If Elaina left, who would be helping her in the foreign land? As far as he knows, Elaina doesn’t have any contact with any people outside the kingdom as he restricted her from even attempting to talk to delegates from other kingdoms. So, if Elaina left, she should have at least some people who would help her there while she is staying temporarily. He knows that Elaina is not someone who doesn’t make any plans so he is quite sure that if ever Elaina leaves the kingdom, she must have some contact with someone out there. And if there is, he will use that opportunity to track her down.

On the other hand, Selena heard everything about the report. She herself wanted to find Elaina as well. However, compared to Alfred, Selena wanted to keep the information to herself and stop Alfred from even getting the clues to Elaina. Behind the scenes, where Alfred is not looking, Selena is using her connections to erase clues regarding Elaina’s whereabouts. Even the slightest hint that can point out the possible place that Elaina might be hiding, Selena will keep the information from spreading.

Yes, not only did she sabotage most of the investigations done by the people of Alfred, but she was intentionally causing the investigations to just go nowhere so that the Emperor would abandon the investigations. She just didn’t expect that one piece of investigation would pass through her and successfully reach his ears.

"I am sorry, Your Majesty. Even though you really wanted to find my sister, I am someone who should be happy that my sister is no longer part of the picture. With her gone, I can finally be together with you. After all, I am someone who should be with you and the perfect woman to be with you. I don’t mind if my sister and I share you, but I prefer to not share you with another woman. Yes, even my sister. So now that she decided to just disappear, I will make help her keep her tracks clean. That way, I can continue to be the ’Only’ wife of his majesty. Selena slowly walks off, on the way to find a way to sabotage the new investigations.
