A Single Mother's Farm of the Gods
Chapter 362: Rainy Summer

Chapter 362: Rainy Summer

"I thought the rain would be minimal during summer...but did summer change after many years have passed, Mother?" Adelaide asked Elaina as they stared outside the window with Arthur singing the "Rain, Rain, Go Away" nursery rhyme.

"Nothing changed, Ade. Summer is still very hot and is one of the weather that is considered to be scalding hot one can say that even I was surprised to see this happen right now. This rainy weather should be more common during fall or maybe in spring, but less in summer. There might be some rain, but not to this extent where it will rain without stopping. This rain has been falling since yesterday."

"Perhaps there is an incoming storm perhaps? Even if it is summer, if there is going to be a storm coming, there is no way it won’t rain even if it is summer season," Adelaide guessed.

"If there are incoming storms, we would have already received some news from the weather magicians who are checking for the storm formations and see whether there are storms or not. There are no storm warnings and we don’t see any incoming news either."

"Then is this just some weird weather pattern then?" Adelaide scratches her head.

"I don’t know..." Elaina sighed as she looked at her Almanac. The weather prediction remained to be "Sunny" which is not what is happening outside.

...

..

..

"God of Farming, if what you said yesterday is true, then that must mean this someone is doing this deliberately, right?"

"[Yes. Changing the weather is something that requires a lot of resources to do. From what I know about modern magic you humans do, they only use this to control stuff if there is drought, they will use resources to make it rain. Other than that, there’s usually no other purpose for changing the weather aside from what I said yesterday and for some things like what I just said just now. Pretty much a situational thing.]"

Elaina couldn’t just keep on sitting inside the house while it was raining. As much as she didn’t want to bother doing so, she had to start working. Although it is raining, there is no flooding that happened even if it rained nonstop since yesterday.

"I don’t know how long this rain is going to continue but I will have to do something first rather than sit still and not do anything at all."

Elaina changed into her work clothes and grabbed her poncho. If it will continue to just rain, then might as well work and do something. It wasn’t a very strong rain anyway, so she could still plant without getting worried about the seeds getting washed off by the rain. She would be more worried about it once it starts to flood, but right now, it won’t be doing much.

With the summer seeds ready, Elaina prepares her tools to begin the process of planting.

"Sis? You are going out in this weather?" Julia frowned.

"Yes. Watch over the kids for me, alright? Don’t let them out in the rain."

"Okay. Be careful as well, Sis. Just because you wear a poncho doesn’t mean you can just disregard yourself. Don’t stay too long outside alright?"

"Yeah, thanks for the reminder."

And with that, Elaina heads outside and heads over to the Fey family. She knocked on the door and Poe opened the door, revealing not only the Fey Family inside but also Pixie who seems to be hanging out with them.

"Boss? Are you going to work? Wait a bit, we will be going in as well..." Poe said but Elaina immediately stopped her.

"No, no. Just spend the cold day resting with your family. Treat it as some sort of vacation. I will handle the things myself."

"But boss..." Poe wanted to protest a bit more but Elaina insisted.

"Nope. Just stay put until then. I know you guys are spirits and rain is nothing for you, but you all should just stay put. I won’t be staying outside for long anyways."

In the end, Poe agreed and the Fey family remained in their homes while Elaina started to do some little work. Thankfully, she had tilled the ground beforehand and although it is a bit eroded due to the rain, it is still tilled so it is fine. Choosing the seeds that don’t really mind wet soil a lot, there are only a few seeds that are fine with that. Seeds that have a thick layer of cover that will not easily rot if it is being buried in the wet soil.

After a while, Elaina decided to choose only a few of them, namely Rice and corn. Rice is naturally attuned to grow in areas where there is plenty of water or nearby water sources. In short, they are perfect to grow during this time. As for corn, they are quite susceptible to excessive water. But it seems the corn type she has right now is resistant to waterlogging, allowing for good chances for it to survive a ground with too much water in its system.

"Less plants to plant, but I can’t just not plant anything at all."

Once she was sure of what to do next, Elaina started planting each seed in their respective areas. She can’t afford to keep on staying under the artificial rain. She still didn’t know who caused this and why doing this in the first place but she was committed to the act now so she continued with her work.

...

...

...

After finishing her work, Elaina went to feed the animals as well. With Curaj not working at the moment after he said that he would stay at home until the rain is over, Elaina has to do the job of cleaning, feeding, and taking care of the animals. Since Elaina knew how to do the work, it was also easily done. Curaj might be the one doing most of the work in the animal husbandry department, but Elaina can still do the work just fine.

The hencluckles are an easy task so she didn’t have much problem with them. Harvest their eggs, feed them change their water, and clean their droppings by using the same mechanism that Jacob made on the coop, cleaning it easily and putting all the droppings in one place. Easy stuff.

As for the Wild Cows, things are a bit different. The droppings are bigger than the hencluckles. Thankfully, just like the coop, it seems even the barn has it and easily cleans up the droppings. The only hard part is to put hay on each cow. Since each cow is quite a heavy eater, Elaina has to put a lot of hay for the Wild Cows to eat. It takes time, but it was fine enough. She also changed their water and glanced at the Wild Cows. Their hair is already long, but their length is still not the ideal length. She will just keep them longer for a bit.

With all the work done, Elaina visited the fairies and talked to them to see whether they were in good condition or not with all of this rain. Just like humans, it seems even fairies would rather stay in their place and stay there rather than play in the rain and enjoy it like Elaina thought fairies would do during rain.

She then checks up on the mermaid and to her surprise, the mermaid is inside a bubble with water inside, protecting her from the rain. She is encased inside but she seems to be doing it intentionally and is using it like a regular umbrella but for a mermaid. The mermaid is happy to see Elaina, but since Elaina can’t speak the mermaid language, she can only nod and smile. The mermaid is fine.

She then headed to the witch and checked her current situation. Before she can even reach her house, she can already hear the mellow music coming from the house. It seems to be from a phonograph. Contrary to her expectation, the witch is currently relaxing and seemingly eating some snacks, seemingly enjoying her new freedom.

"Is it some kind of tradition to you guys as well?" Elaina asked the witch about her behavior in the rain.

"Ah, you mean this? No. I am just doing this as I wanted to relax and besides, it’s cold and is cozy to stay in bed for a bit. Cuddling with my blanket and eating some snacks and just listening to some tunes with my phonograph, it just hits differently."

Elaina nodded since she could understand the feeling. In fact, if she didn’t have any work, she would also love to do something like that as well. But since she has work to do, there’s not much she can do. After finding out that the witch is also fine and is only relaxing, Elaina decides to head back home. Just as she was about to get back inside, the voice of the Harvest Goddess called Elaina.

"Hey, Elaina! I have something to tell you! Can I come over to the house?"

"Don’t tell me it is another gossip again?" Elaina frowned.

"Oh, don’t be too worried. You would be also interested in this. After all, it involves this rainy weather we have right now."

As soon as she heard that, Elaina looked at the Harvest Goddess with interest. "Alright, tell me more."
