Chapter 118: Interrogation of the Intruder
Chapter 118: Interrogation of the Intruder
The hunt for the monster is successful. While the monster is dead, Elaina checks on her sword to see if there was any damage that occurred on her blade after the attack they did against the monster. It was a big one so Elaina was worried that it might have broken a part or two on her sword.
"Phew, no damage. Looks like it is fine for now," Elaina sighed in relief seeing the blade is still looking good and spotless.
She then glanced at Julia who was currently removing all of the mud stuck on the monster. She underestimated the amount of mud stuck on it and washing it off with so much water was not enough to remove it, she needed to remove it with a pressure in the water to forcefully remove the mud fully.
So far, the form is slowly revealing and just like what Elaina guessed, it does look like a crocodile. But since there is no crocodile monster this big, it must be a subspecies or some kind of different reptile.
But this expedition to the forest is good enough for Elaina as they succeed in both their main objective and optional objectives.
Although the reptile monster will have to take some verifications for a while to see if it is edible, the Swamp Walker Trout’s meat is a good alternative for meat since the Swamp Walker Trout is something that Elaina had tried, and tested to be edible. It might taste like meat, but it is still fish and anyone who doesn’t know the origin of the meat will think they are eating meat from a cow or deer. In short, the food supply is overflowing again with all of the meat they retrieved from that monster alone.
The cleanup process took a bit of time but Elaina and the others helped clean up the carcass of the monster took all the materials that could be salvaged and used and ensured that not a single thing was left behind that would cause pollution or stagnation in the area. They don’t want monsters or animals to start flocking into the area due to their actions.
"Are there any business left you guys have in here?" Elaina asked everyone.
"Nope. Got all of the stuff I needed right here," Julia pulls out her pouch full of medicinal herbs she picked up on the way.
"I am good as well. I just helped out Miss Julia on it," Princess Margaux said.
"I am just accompanying everyone here to get experience. I don’t have anything to do in here aside from that," Princess Tabatha said as she wiped her sword.
"Well, if that is the case, then let’s get back home. I am starving and tired from all of that stuff I did."
Everyone nodded and after they got all things sorted out, they left the area carrying all the stuff they got from both the Swamp Walker Trout and the unknown monster they killed.
...
...
...
Around an hour later, the group arrived at the farm. Everyone sighed in relief after they arrived as they could finally rest at last.
The girls went straight inside the house to cool themselves and get some things to be done. As for Elaina, she has to put the items they just hauled in and dry with blood before they put it inside.
Elaina put the bag down when Elaina noticed someone near the stream encased inside a cage made from water. Inside is a woman who looks like a human and yet looks different since she has some features that are not from a human. For example, the fins in her head.
"Ah, finally you have arrived at long last. You have kept me waiting!" the Harvest Goddess appeared before Elaina with a look on her face looking relieved.
"Eh? Is this your doing?" Elaina points over to the person inside the water cage.
"Yep. She broke in earlier and got subdued by Shardu a few hours ago. She claims she is just following the traces of her daughter who is being kept in here."
"Her daughter? But we don’t have any kids in here? Except if you count Mier."
"Yep. The one and only. This woman is of the same species as Mier. However, I am uncertain if she is indeed the Mother of Mier. Who knows, she might be someone who is looking for the kid in the first place and is trying to dispose of her?" the Harvest Goddess explained her reasons.
"Understandable. Can’t have someone try that out under our nose," Elaina nodded in agreement.
"Which is why I held her for you to interrogate. I can’t just interrogate her since she is more resistant than I thought and I have a short tolerance for that kind of people."
"You needed to learn to be patient then. Anyways, you can free her from the cage but don’t remove the bindings just yet. Just like what you said, we don’t know if she is trustworthy or not."
The Harvest Goddess snapped her fingers and the cage made of water disappeared in a flash and the woman inside was freed aside from her bindings that kept her from using her hands and running away.
She looked at Elaina with anger in her eyes while still trying to break free from her restraints.
"So, the goddess just said that you broke in here in search of your daughter, is that correct?" Elaina asked.
"Indeed. The scent of my daughter smells strong in here and based on the information I got from two girls swimming last time, my daughter is currently held here," she calmly said while still looking at Elaina with hostility.
"I see. But how can I be so sure that you are the parent of that said kid in the first place? You might be some bad person who is looking for the kid and trying to abduct her."
"If you needed proof, then I can guarantee that I am indeed the mother. Here, take this scale and put it on the forehead of the kid," the female merfolk removed one of her scales that was on her hands and handed it over to Elaina.
"If it is my kid, the scale would glow as soon as it is placed on the forehead. It is proof that the baby and myself are connected.
Elaina took the scale and looked at the scale that looked like a little prism. It looks dull and it doesn’t look like it has any sort of way to glow any light. She even tried to put it on her forehead if it would glow even if she were not the kid but she confirmed that it did not react at all to her.
Elaina glanced at the Harvest Goddess and she nodded in response. She disappeared for a second before reappearing again but this time, she is currently cradling Mier in her arms.
"My daughter!" the female merfolk is genuinely excited and tearful after she sees the baby in the arms of the Harvest Goddess.
The Harvest Goddess gets close to Elaina to allow the scale to be placed on Mier’s forehead. At first, the scale didn’t react but it soon changed as the scale slowly glows brighter and in a few more seconds later, the scale is now glowing bright blue.
"That! That is indeed the proof of glowing that proves that she is my daughter!" The female merfolk exclaimed excitedly.
Elaina and the Harvest Goddess looked at each other. Then I mentally asked the gods if what we did was indeed a real method to identify if it was their kin or not in which the gods agreed that it was indeed their way of knowing who is their kid or not.
In short, the woman is indeed telling the truth. Mier is indeed her baby and she is the mother of Mier.
"Looks like she is indeed the real deal."
Hearing that, the Harvest Goddess looked at the woman and the baby reluctantly before she decided to hand over the little kid to her.
As soon as the two reunited, the mother burst into tears. She hugged the baby with longing. And it seems the baby also realizes that the one who is snuggling her is her mother as she snuggles back.
"Ha...guess my job as the sitter is finally over," the Harvest Goddess smiled but it looked like a pained smile like she was forcing herself to smile.
But as they thought that the baby and the mother would go back home, the mother once again spoke to Elaina.
"Ummm, can I ask for a request? Even if it is presumptuous of me to do this despite my attempt to break into this farm?"
"A request? Well, I don’t see why not. And besides, you have a good reason to break inside the farm especially since you are looking for your baby, then I can understand. What is it then?" Elaina frowned.
"I know this sounds a bit too much but...Perhaps we can stay here for a little while with my daughter until the end of summer?"
