Chapter 503: Chapter 391: Successor City Lord (Fifth Update)
As for the "Main City", Ouyang Nuo knew more than Jiang Hai did. He knew that it was an enormous and terrifying existence that truly dominated many cities in this world. Destroying a city was just a matter of an instant for it. The envoy standing before them held a significant status within the "Main City". Outside, they were almost equivalent to representing the authority of the "Master of the Main City", akin to an imperial envoy from ancient times. So how could they dare offend them in any way?
Seeing Su Yu treat the woman in white so casually, Ouyang Nuo felt a mix of consternation and mirth. He admired the fearlessness of the novice and found it amusing because this was an attitude he didn’t dare to display himself. But now someone was doing it for him, producing a sense of satisfaction he couldn’t quite explain.
"Haha..." Ouyang Nuo couldn’t help but laugh, then nodded and said, "That guy you were up against is the ’Fire General’ from ’General City’. Unfortunately, his invincible ’Earth Heart Barbaric Flame’ ultimately lost to my ’Golden Bone Flame’. Haha, I guess I have to thank you for those two ’Wood Core Fire’."
Ouyang Nuo laughed heartily.
The woman in white watched them, feeling extremely upset. She couldn’t help but glare at Su Yu and quietly muttered, "I’ll get my chance to deal with you. Just you wait." Stomping her foot angrily, she turned around and walked away. As she took a few steps away, a surreal scene unfolded.
Su Yu turned around, laughing, only to see the woman make several strides. Then, a faint white light began to radiate from her body. As the light steadily rose and dissipated, she eventually vanished entirely, disappearing before everyone.
At this, Su Yu’s smile froze, replaced by shock. What kind of ability was this? How could someone just disappear right before everyone’s eyes like that? Could it be some sort of invisibility power? It didn’t seem quite right.
As Su Yu was still shocked, Jiang Hai sighed and said, "The Envoys are returning to the Main City... I really have no idea what kind of place it must be." His voice was filled with longing.
On the other hand, Jin Fuhua was shocked to the point where his eyes bulged out. In his understanding, "Black Iron City" was already a formidable existence. Only now did he realize that there were cities even greater than the "Black Iron City", and that the "Main City" clearly reigned over them. According to the woman in white, the "Main City" ruled over countless smaller towns, and the "Black Iron City" was merely one of them.
Su Yu asked softly, "Ada, what kind of ability did that woman demonstrate just now?"
Ada replied with a smile, "It’s likely some kind of teleportation ability created using a special charm. As far as I know, there are many scrolls in this world that can use charm power to teleport to a specific location from memory. The woman in white just now seems to have used a similar method. It’s really nothing special. After we, the Category 5 Lifeforms, mature, we also gain a similar ability."
As Su Yu listened to Ada explain, he was hailed by Ouyang Nuo and the others and entered the palace before him.
The palace was very spacious, over fifty meters in both length and width. At the far end of the hall, there was a massive seat carved from jade, draped with thick fur – a place only the City Lord was worthy of occupying.
When Su Yu, accompanied by Ada, took his seat at the position of the City Lord, everyone in the grand hall, lead by Ouyang Nuo and Jiang Hai, took a knee.
Su Yu sat on the throne, gazing at the numerous people kneeling before him. An odd satisfaction filled his heart – was this the thrilling sensation of power, looking down at everyone from a position of superiority?
"Please rise." Su Yu called out from his high perch, watching the people kneeling below. He suddenly felt incredibly powerful and tall, while the people below seemed smaller by comparison. It felt as though he was born to control them – their lives, their every belonging, were all in the palm of his hand.
A shiver ran through him as he instinctively fended off this feeling, but his voice still carried an involuntary air of authority – his state and actions had changed subtly.
"I need to know everything. Each of you, introduce yourselves." Su Yu’s voice carried an unquestionable command. Sitting atop his high throne, he appeared more formidable by the second. Jin Fuhua glanced up at him and realized that the Su Yu had transformed completely, his voice bearing an irresistible authority.
Those who had been allowed into the grand hall were the ones with the highest authority and rank within the "Black Iron City". The highest-ranked officials were the first deputy city lord, Ouyang Nuo, and the second deputy city lord, Jiang Hai. The position of the third deputy city lord remained vacant since the death of the bewitching woman.
After the three deputy city lords, the next highest-ranking officials were the "Ten Envoys". Each had a power level of at least Level Five Senior, and several of them had even reached Sixth Order Peak, barely a step away from the Seventh Order Realm.
Each of the "Ten Envoys" had a different role. Some governed the City Lord’s guard, some defended the Black Iron City, some managed intelligence, some were in charge of training, and some managed the taxation of the various towns under them, and so on. Their work was well divided and organized. The city could be described as a miniature kingdom. Its systems were well-established and mature enough to function without any intervention from Su Yu. Moreover, even if Su Yu were to do nothing but sleep all day, the city wouldn’t descend into chaos due to a lack of management.
It took Su Yu an entire day to get a detailed understanding of Black Iron City, and the deeper his understanding, the more astonished he became.
Black Iron City covered nearly ten thousand acres and had a population of over twenty thousand. However, less than three thousand of those people were combat capable. Following the death of former City Lord Olic, almost one thousand warriors died at once, leaving only around one thousand five hundred Fourth Order Black-clothed Knights. There were a little over one hundred Level Five Black Iron Warriors remaining, and about twenty Sixth-order ones. Altogether, the number of combat-capable people didn’t exceed two thousand.
In addition to these fewer than two thousand combat-capable people, the remaining nearly twenty thousand were people who had no combat capabilities and belonged to the Zero-Level Black Iron Warriors. These were the same people Su Yu had seen when he first arrived in Black Iron City—those ragged groups kneeling by the side of the road, who looked very lowly.
These people were the hard labourers at the bottom of society, responsible for all the production work that sustained the development of the entire Black Iron City.
Simultaneously, Su Yu also learnt the origins of these people—they were New Humans.
When Su Yu learnt this, he was enormously shocked. In that instant, he thought of Kou Xiaowei. He had once heard Ada say that Kou Xiaowei was a New Human and that the New Humans belonged to the 3.5 category of life forms, which were supposed to be a superior race to ordinary humans. But why were they at the bottom of this world, enslaved like slaves?
Kou Xiaowei was also a New Human and was stuck at the Zero-level, unable to evolve. When Su Yu saw nearly twenty thousand New Humans in the city, all of them Zero-level Black Iron Warriors, his confusion reached a peak. Could it be that New Humans were a kind of people who can’t evolve?
Although Su Yu had been curious about Kou Xiaowei’s identity as a New Human, he had only heard Ada mention that New Humans were considered as 3.5 category life forms, a bit more advanced than ordinary humans. However, until now, when seeing more than ten thousand New Humans plunged into such a miserable state, all unable to evolve, he finally realized that Kou Xiaowei’s inability to evolve might be related to her identity.
When Su Yu asked about his suspicions, Ada smiled slightly and said, "Su Yu, do you know what New Humans are?"
Su Yu shook his head and said, "I don’t. Ada, you said that New Humans should be superior to us, but now... if they are superior, why can’t they evolve?" He indeed didn’t understand and was quite curious about it.
Ada said, "Speaking of New Humans," he paused, then continued, "for instance, Su Yu, you are a Black Iron Warrior with special powers. If you were to marry another Black Iron Warrior who also possesses special powers, like Ziye or Su Yun..."
Su Yu blushed and protested, "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Ada chortled and said, "I’m just making an example. If you marry one of them and have a child, that child will be a New Human."
Su Yu was taken aback, finally showing a surprised expression, he looked at Ada and slowly said, "Could it be... if both parents are mutated Black Iron Warriors with special powers, the child they gave birth to would be a New Human?"
"That’s right. The child who is born inherently possesses special powers and belongs to the Zero-Level Black Iron Warriors. Compared to ordinary humans who haven’t mutated, they are indeed superior. I didn’t make a mistake when I said that New Humans are more advanced than ordinary humans."
Su Yu was dumbfounded, then hurriedly said, "If New Humans are higher-level than ordinary humans, why can ordinary humans continue to evolve? Even the most foolish ones with no talent can at least evolve into Level Four Warriors. Why do New Humans remain at Zero-level and never able to evolve? Logically, New Humans should be able to evolve easier."
"Yes, what you said is not wrong. But this is also the greatest tragedy of this world, or you could say evolved humans. Su Yu, it’s forbidden for humans to interbreed, isn’t it?"
Su Yu nodded and said, "That’s correct. Relatives within five generations aren’t allowed to intermarry. This is because the chances of producing a mentally disabled child or one with a hereditary disease are much higher compared to a child born from an ordinary couple."
