Chapter 122 - 122 75 Soothing the Child_3
Chapter 122: Chapter 75: Soothing the Child_3 Chapter 122: Chapter 75: Soothing the Child_3 His gaze fell on her like the bright moon, its clarity resting on the phone he’d placed on the table, giving it a nudge to show her the screen.
It displayed a solo picture of her from her graduation; the city forest behind her was drenched in deep hues of rain, but she shone brightly with a splendid smile, as if delighting in a clear sunny day.
“Switch to this one,” he said.
She was somewhat surprised, yet hesitant to believe, fearing her hopes might be dashed:
“…How do you have this photo?”
Had she posted it on her circle of friends?
Wen Yangzhi looked at her with a hint of teasing yet probing gaze, “Nannan herself sent it over for brother to see. Why do you think brother has it?”
Yun Yuwan’s grip on the tablet tightened involuntarily, and she said with embarrassment, “You knew.”
Wen Yangzhi’s demeanor was calm, his words sparse, “Logged into the same iCloud, everything that should sync has synced; you deleted it, but I still have it on my phone.”
Yun Yuwan lowered her head, murmuring softly, “…Oh.”
She hadn’t realized this, that he had seen it all along.
This person had figured it out a while ago.
She held the tablet, her brows slack and eyes dulled.
Wen Yangzhi’s voice was gentle and serene, “Why did you delete it?”
She muttered under her breath, “It just seemed superfluous, and you wouldn’t want it anyway.”
Wen Yangzhi’s voice was firm yet composed, “Of course I’d want it. Brother has always wanted your picture, but you never send solo pictures of yourself to brother.”
Yun Yuwan was taken aback and lifted her head, only to find that Wen Yangzhi’s gaze had never left her. Sunlight poured down, the osmanthus tree on the balcony cast dense shadows, and fragments of light through the leaves spread speckles over him, resembling scattered snowflakes or soft moonlight, bathing him as he smiled gently beneath the tree, his eyes and expression radiantly valiant.
Wen Yangzhi rarely smiled at anyone like this, and it sent a warm flush through Yun Yuwan.
She couldn’t help but feel the corners of her mouth lift but felt too shy to let him see her smile, awkwardly forcing her lips downward.
Wen Yangzhi’s voice came with playful mocking, “Happy now?”
She remained stubborn, “A little, maybe.”
Wen Yangzhi’s soft voice asked her, “Can you come sit beside me?”
She still wanted to quibble, “Why don’t you come over to me instead?”
His voice was tender, “Brother’s leg hurts and can’t move.”
Yun Yuwan paused, looking at the clear sky, “…How did your leg come to hurt?”
He spoke matter-of-factly, without blame, just stating the truth, “I stumbled looking for you last night.”
Yun Yuwan was surprised, “You went looking for me?”
The art gallery? She had placed many floral arrangements there, which were quite obstructive. Manon had nearly tripped over them, complaining that if it weren’t for the exhibition opening in a couple of days, she would have had someone clear them all away.
Wen Yangzhi remained composed, watching her steadily, a smile in his question, “Do you think it might have been upstairs?”
Yun Yuwan met his gaze, feeling somewhat guilty.
She indeed spent the entire night with Jiang Yingyu upstairs.
Since he knew, he must be somewhat upset.
Wen Yangzhi’s middle and index fingers beckoned her with a hooking gesture.
Yun Yuwan approached tentatively.
To her surprise, Wen Yangzhi didn’t blame her for that but simply asked her, “Can you talk to me first in the future instead of making assumptions and expecting the worst? Can you do that?”
Yun Yuwan couldn’t resist, “But I’m afraid the worst might happen.”
His gaze remained fixed on her, unwavering, “There’s no ‘worst case’ with brother, because brother will always be by your side.”
Yun Yuwan felt as though her heart had finally settled like a heavy stone, no longer perched on a cliff-edge, at the mercy of winds that could send her plummeting at any moment.
Yet unable to trust fleeting sweet nothings, she probed, “So I hung out with Jiang Yingyu all night, and you’re not angry?”
His demeanor remained unruffled, his voice indifferent, “You know that doing so is a betrayal to brother, so will there be a ‘next time’?”
She shook her head, “But he’s my friend.”
Wen Yangzhi was concise, “Some people might be friends, but not Jiang Yingyu.”
Yun Yuwan was perplexed, “Why not?”
Wen Yangzhi’s response was unhurried, “At last night’s banquet, people were fawning over Mrs. Jiang en masse, saying the Jiang Family has auspicious tidings on the horizon, and she accepted all of this, even telling me our families are fated. Mrs. Jiang always enjoys climbing the social ladder.”
Yun Yuwan hadn’t expected this, “So what should we do?”
Wen Yangzhi was calm, even trying to amuse her, “What can we do? Jiang Jianqing explained to the guests until midnight, saying you and Jiang Yingyu are friends, and you have a boyfriend.”
She breathed a sigh of relief and with renewed conviction stated, “Well, we really are friends.”
He simply cautioned, “You can be friends, but you can’t let him fall for you.”
Realizing he hadn’t misunderstood, Yun Yuwan hastened to say, “He won’t. He’s a bachelor by choice, and ours is a pure camaraderie. The last time we had a matchmaking dinner, he stood me up.”
