Chapter 1403: Chapter 949: Exploring the Depths and Seeking Secrets_2

The threats lying dormant deep within the spaceship wreck are what truly need our attention.

"Ogis, Mary, and I will lead the way, with Medea following behind us."

Duanmu Huai scanned the surroundings and, after confirming the absence of enemies, he then gave out the commands before turning his gaze to Mary.

"Mary, remind me if you see anything out of the ordinary."

"Okay...Mr. Duanmu, although I feel like everything here seems pretty abnormal."

Mary opened her right eye, which shone brightly. Despite the gloomy environment, her golden pupil still glimmered radiantly.

"Let me see if I can find those idiots’ traces on the Bird Divination Tool."

While speaking, Duanmu Huai turned on the Bird Divination Tool and scanned the surroundings, then locked onto a direction.

"Let’s walk this way. We don’t know their situation, but generally speaking, if they wanted to investigate something, they would likely head towards the bridge——hmm, this cruiser Shepperd should be very familiar to them, so I think they won’t get lost. Anyway, follow me."

To be a derelict, this warship was in surprisingly complete condition; at least from the outside, there were no signs of being shattered. But in fact, this might be a worse sign—if the warship’s exterior had fractures, at least it might indicate that it was likely destroyed during some battle. However, the nearly intact appearance of this spaceship wreck suggests that its problems originated from the inside.

And typically, that is not good news.

It might be the whisperings of Chaotic Demons piercing through the Gellar Field, turning tens of thousands of people aboard into mentally broken lunatics or Mutants, or it could be that among them were Demon followers, who called upon their master while traversing Subspace, and it’s possible there was Psychic rebellion—like when a Psychic sneezed and Summoned a Chaotic Demon... well, such events are not unusual at all.

Or the situation could be even worse.

Of course, each scenario is rather bleak in its own right.

Clutching the War Hammer, Duanmu Huai steadily advanced step by step, with Ogis and Mary seated on his shoulders to the left and right, and Medea seated on the Jet Backpack behind him. Ogis appeared to be well accustomed to this, while Mary was somewhat nervous. She held a gun in one hand and clutched a protrusion on Duanmu Huai’s shoulder armor with the other. Fortunately, the ship was currently in a state of low gravity, so Mary wasn’t worried about being shaken off by Duanmu Huai.

Passing through the warehouse, the group arrived at a massive engineering compartment and upon seeing the corpses on the floor, Duanmu Huai stopped in his tracks. He then reached out and lifted up one of the relatively well-preserved bodies, and under the illumination of the searchlight, the rotten transformed skin, along with the bullet holes on the body, became clearly visible.

"Ugh..."

On seeing this, Mary immediately turned her head away. Although she had seen many disgusting things while following Duanmu Huai, she just... wasn’t accustomed to it.

Duanmu Huai extended a finger and inserted it into a bullet hole in the chest of the body, scratching around inside before pulling it out.

"Looks like the Star Union did indeed come here, and they encountered an attack on site."

"Huh? You can tell that from this, Mr. Duanmu?"

Hearing Duanmu Huai’s remarks, Mary was surprised.

"Of course, you can just look at the bullet holes. The individuals dead here, their bullet holes are neither scorched wounds from energy guns, nor are they the result of explosions from Bomb Guns, leaving only the likelihood of the Star Union."

Duanmu Huai shrugged and continued speaking. Because the Human Empire has to deal with all kinds of bizarre entities, normal firearms are largely ineffective; the average soldier uses a flashlight Laser Gun, and the more advanced will use Bomb Guns.

However, the weaponry of the Star Union is completely different. The Star Union’s weapons mainly inflict damage through acceleration using mass effect fields, meaning the Star Union’s weapons focus more on penetration, while the Imperial weapons prioritize power.

Of course, it’s not to say that the approach of the Star Union is wrong; after all, Divine Assembly technology involves outer shields and inner armor, so penetrating the shield is a necessity for effective damage. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work well against Aliens—as can be seen by the dozens of bullet holes in this Mutant, completely ineffective.

Facing such monsters unafraid of pain, the penetrating power of the acceleration-style weapons of the Star Union is greatly reduced.

"If it were my sister, she probably wouldn’t be struggling like this."

Duanmu Huai retracted his gaze and discarded the corpse of the mutant he was holding. He had cooperated with the Shepard siblings before; the sister favored a more ferocious battle style, preferring weapons like shotguns and hand cannons that kill with a mere graze. Whereas the brother preferred more precise weapons like pistols and sniper rifles.

In plain terms, one relished leaving a field strewn with corpses, while the other preferred to disable the enemy first and then consider how to deal with them.

And when facing aliens and heretics, the former was more intimidating.

Especially in places like this, well... Duanmu Huai thought unless the brother had the aura of the main character, his chances of survival were slim.

With the corpses serving as markers, Duanmu Huai sped up his advance considerably. Soon they had passed through the passageway and arrived at another engineering room. This was where Shepard’s brother and others were previously attacked by aliens and had to flee. Only this time, the room still seemed deathly silent, except for the corpses on the ground...

"..."

Duanmu Huai looked at the odd corpses before him with an uncertain expression. Under the searchlight, one could see the mutants’ slightly oval-shaped heads and their four arms, as well as the weapons in their hands...

"Alright, it seems we can almost guess what happened inside this warship now, damned aliens, despicable genetic thieves."

Duanmu Huai crushed the sacrilegious head of the heretic with his foot and muttered lowly.

"The passageway on the other side is blocked, MASTER."

Medea raised her magic wand, pointing to the exit opposite — the path was thoroughly blocked by a fallen elevator and steel pipes.

"That’s not a problem, leave it to me."

Duanmu Huai gripped his War Hammer with his right hand, then raised his left hand toward the rubble and clenched it forcefully!

"Boom————!"

In an instant, the pile of debris burst apart, revealing the passageway inside. The massive noise from the explosion echoed through the spaceship wreck — in this silent void, even the drop of a bullet would cause a piercing noise, let alone an explosion-like sound.

Indeed, this magic is formidable.

Duanmu Huai lowered his hand and nodded in satisfaction.

He might have to return to that planet later and study this human magic system thoroughly with Frieren or other magicians.

"Alright, let’s continue... huh?"

However, before Duanmu Huai could finish, a flurry of hurried footsteps suddenly arose, like something rapidly crawling through the steel pipes, the sound of leaping on the wire mesh floor.

"What’s that sound? Mr. Duanmu?"

Mary gripped her weapon tightly, listening uneasily to the sounds coming from all directions — it was as if the echoes of everything Duanmu Huai had just done were reverberating back, but in a completely different form.

"It’s nothing, just that the real show is about to start."

Duanmu Huai clenched his War Hammer, observing his surroundings.

"Everyone, prepare for battle!"
