After that, Duanmu Huai took the painting, bid farewell with the monkey, and left.
"Come on, Monkey, over to you, find this fellow."
Duanmu Huai casually threw the painting to Sun Wukong, who, with curiosity, took it and turned to Duanmu Huai to ask.
"Master, from the look of you, have you guessed the reason already?"
"Pretty much, it’s obvious, the death of the bridegroom must be related to Gao’s Family. Most likely, Gao’s Family made a third wish, and that’s why the bridegroom met his tragic end."
"Hey hey, now that’s interesting."
The monkey was also curious.
"According to what that woman said, after the first wish, the great-grandfather lost his wife, Gao’s Family wished, and the husband died. Now she’s a widow. Even if she wishes again, why would a son-in-law die?"
"Ha, you monkey know nothing at all."
Duanmu Huai curled his lip.
"You’re just a simpleton who even after getting a hold of the Seven Fairy Maidens, still goes stealing peaches; if I tell you, you won’t understand."
"Hey, Master, that’s not right."
Hearing this, the monkey couldn’t sit still anymore.
"If it weren’t for my quick thinking, had I not immobilized those Seven Fairy Maidens, what if they had seen me and shouted? Wouldn’t I have been unable to steal the peaches?"
"Calling you a simpleton, and yet you won’t admit it, isn’t this just pure simplicity?"
Duanmu Huai also rolled his eyes, figuring that the monkey still hadn’t realized his mistake.
"Have you not realized that the deceased from the previous two incidents were both their closest kin?"
"Master, what are you saying, I’m not stupid; but that bridegroom and Gao’s Family aren’t husband and wife, if so, it should have been the bride making the wish."
"What if the two had the reality of husband and wife without the title?"
"...........?"
Upon hearing that, the monkey scratched its ears and cheeks, paused, and then quickly caught on.
"Is that possible?"
"What’s not possible about it? Look at how well-preserved Gao’s Family matriarch is; she’s only in her forties and still charming. And we’ve seen the bridegroom; although simple and honest, he was robust. It’s not impossible for something to happen between them. Besides, didn’t Gao’s Family mention earlier that since Wang Yuwai’s son was bewitched by a fox, they thought about finding another match for their daughter? With so many servants in Gao’s Village, if they’re not thoroughly vetted, wouldn’t they be afraid of their daughter falling into a tiger’s den?"
"So, what you mean, Master, is..........?"
The monkey wasn’t really dumb, and now with shining eyes, it caught on.
"Did Gao’s Family give her own lover to her daughter as the bridegroom?"
"What’s so odd about that? The daughter gets a son-in-law who’s already well-known to her, and they’re likely aware of everything about him. It’s reassuring for them. Maybe later they can even share a large quilt and enjoy life together... all right all right, enough of that, can you find the person or not?"
"Hehehe, Master, rest assured, when I, Old Sun, make a move, there’ll be no problems!"
The monkey had its fill of fun, and now it was back to business. It blew on the painting, and immediately the whole picture burst into flames. In a blink of an eye, it transformed into a small fireball, floating and drifting towards the outside of Gao’s Village. Sun Wukong also transformed in an instant, riding on a lucky cloud, chasing after the fireball.
"Okay.........."
Duanmu Huai stretched and then clenched his fists.
"I might as well take a look."
In Journey to the West, Monk Tang often played a role that was not very flattering. As a master, he couldn’t control his disciples, and as a monk, he couldn’t exert any influence on certain matters. Frankly speaking, in Duanmu Huai’s view, Monk Tang was much like an NPC-like character, and in fact, Sun Wukong was the real protagonist. Monk Tang was just like those characters in game instances who were needed for plot conflicts.
Like... hey, I’m a great adventurer and explorer, I will join you in exploring this tomb.
Oh, look at what this is? Let me touch it..........
Or... I’m an archaeologist and dug up a mysterious ancient tomb. Look, there are seals here, ancient people were so superstitious. We should believe in science, and then I pull this off.......
Well, he’s kind of like those characters who are roadblocks on the protagonist’s path.
If Journey to the West were made into a free sandbox souls-like game, it would be interesting to see how many people would control Sun Wukong to kill Monk Tang right away to lower the difficulty.
"Boom----------------!"
Just as Duanmu Huai stepped out of Gao Village, he heard thunder rolling over the nearby mountains, apparently the battle had started.
However... to tell the truth, Sun Wukong’s combat power is a bit puzzling.
Duanmu Huai stroked his chin, staring at the mountain slope ahead. In theory, Sun Wukong had wreaked havoc in the Celestial Palace, fought against a hundred thousand Heavenly Soldiers and Generals, and all the Immortals couldn’t subdue him; it took Guanyin Bodhisattva to ask Tathagata to press him under a mountain for five hundred years. So, Sun Wukong must be quite a formidable figure. But in Duanmu Huai’s opinion, this monkey’s power didn’t seem as mystifying as he himself boasted.
The evidence is that Sun Wukong, no matter what Monster he encountered, could battle it for dozens of rounds, appearing perfectly matched. If the Monster couldn’t win, it could escape just by using a bit of illusion. Honestly, from this point of view, Sun Wukong might not be that strong; by all logic, when encountering those Devils, Sun Wukong wouldn’t need to toy with them, just a Fixed Body Spell and a hit with his rod could finish them off.
