Chapter 898: Chapter 15 Who Looked After Catherine
"Your Lina and Vivian both have their own support that can effectively immunize them from Danacus’s Soul Assault," Doris said. Upon hearing Doris’s reference, Lina’s transparently fair cheeks instantly flushed red, but Doris, as if not noticing, turned to Ava with a smile and said, "As for her... her soul is not like ours, it simply isn’t afraid of Soul Assault, I think you should know why, do I really need to say it?"
"No need," Pannis coughed dryly and shook his head, "But, you know this too? No, no, I mean, can Caleto and Weston see it as well? That’s highly unlikely."
"Of course, they didn’t see it," Doris covered her mouth and chuckled, "Her identity was personally revealed to Lord Caleto by a certain newly ascended Deity during a visit to our lord, she knew what you had done before, and made it clear what Lord Caleto thinks of you, so she didn’t hide anything when she told Lord Caleto. There’s no need for me to explain her purpose, right?"
"Is she... doing alright?" Ava asked emotionlessly after a few seconds of silence, "I’ve shielded her for so many years, she must hate me, after all, we were once enemies."
"Do you hate her?" Doris countered, "She spoke to me directly through Lord Caleto, and haha, whatever feelings you have for her in your heart, she has the same for you, since, in a certain sense, you are... you understand."
"Thank you," said Ava, her face stern as she bowed slightly to Doris, "This is the right time to say thank you, isn’t it, Pannis?"
"Yes, this is a very appropriate time," Pannis nodded and signalled to Catherine, who cooperatively embraced Ava in her arms, petting her head as a reward. Indeed, Ava comfortably nuzzled against the knight’s hand, squinting her eyes contentedly like a cat. Pannis couldn’t help but smile before he continued speaking to Doris, "I must admit, your reasoning is sound, but what about Catherine? I can’t imagine how she could possibly avoid the effects of Soul Assault."
"I explained it when I first met her two years ago," Doris said, tilting her head, "I told you then that you are a God-favored, do you still not believe it? Or did you mistakenly think that Demos, who has fallen, is the one favoring you just to entice you into contact with the Nightmare Spirit? But you are truly mistaken. Being God-favored isn’t as simple as you think. Perhaps a slumbering Deity can watch over mortals, but a fallen Deity, no matter what, is incapable of doing so. So rest assured, you are still recognized as God-favored to this day, and I think this won’t change in the future."
"God-favored?" The other Demigods present, obviously hearing about Catherine’s status for the first time, immediately looked at her differently. In their eyes, Catherine was merely a child with potential, who might ascend to Demigod rank in the future, or more likely, remain forever at Legendary Rank, so it was enough to treat her properly. But now, things were different. In any era, the God-favored are to be regarded seriously, for the future of such individuals is filled with possibilities, and any achievement they obtain is not surprising. Therefore, each of them scrutinized the knight with their gazes, silently weighing their thoughts.
Only Pannis still spoke nonchalantly, "Whether she is God-favored or not doesn’t matter. There have been God-favored in history who entered the Death Zone, even at the Demigod Rank, but they didn’t die much slower than anyone else."
"That refers to other divine patronages, not Catherine," Doris said meaningfully. "Compared to other divine patronages, she is exceptional because the Deity watching over her is also special. None of the god-favored individuals of other Deities would suffice, but she alone can move freely in and out of the Death Zone. The Soul Assault of the Death Zone solely has no effect on her."
"I can’t think of any special Deity that could do that, unless the Deity patronizing Catherine is Danacus himself." Pannis’s voice grew softer as his eyes widened. "You don’t really think it’s Danacus himself watching over her, do you? Such things shouldn’t be said lightly. We have always been enemies of Danacus; how could he possibly watch over his own enemy?"
"Is there really no Deity who would watch over their own enemy? I don’t think so," Doris muttered softly, before saying with resignation, "Where on earth did your thoughts wander to? How could it possibly be Danacus? You’re usually so clever, so why does your brain get so muddled when talking about them? I can assure you, the one watching over her is definitely not Danacus himself."
"Apart from Danacus, I can’t think of whose patronage could remain unaffected in the three Death Zones." Pannis visibly relaxed, muttering, "Couldn’t you just make it clear? Who exactly is watching over her?"
"Unfortunately, I indeed cannot," Doris shook her head mysteriously and said, "I cannot defy the Oracle of my lord, and besides, not telling you is for your own good. When it’s time for you to know, all riddles will naturally be unraveled, and then you will think, ah, so that’s how it is, it was him."
"Pannis, let’s not talk about this anymore." Though directly involved in the conversation, Catherine had remained calm like an onlooker until now when she shook her head. "I believe Doris’s words. She is not only not going to harm me but is actually helping me. Thank you, Doris."
"Of course I’ll help you. I have said it before, you are friends of the Sea Race, and that will never change," Doris’s gaze moved past Pannis’s face and met with Fula, who was looking up at the same time. As leaders of the same race, as two of the most outstanding women standing at the pinnacle of the world, their exchange of looks was especially subtle. Doris looked at Fula with a smile, saying, "Just as resolute as you were in shattering the Nightmare Spirit, so solid is the friendship of the Sea Race. Rest assured, we will stand behind you, watching as you finally achieve victory."
"Reinforcements, huh? Heh." Fula rested her chin on her hand and leaned on the table, smiling faintly, then in the lowest voice, she murmured to herself, "I’m not incapable of calling for reinforcements either, Doris."
"Ahem, although I didn’t quite understand, this problem can be put aside for now." Pannis coughed loudly a few times, just missing Fula’s whisper, his face full of confusion. "What about Freya then? Surely Freya isn’t a divine patronage either. You just mentioned five people, which means you included her as well."(To be continued.
