Chapter 896: Chapter 13 Selection of People
"No matter the reason, those are not the most important issues right now," Odin tapped on the table to interrupt the conversation between the two ladies. "The most important issue at hand is what this change means. It means that the enemy is preparing to reopen Death’s Gate from the inside, while we are unable to go in from the outside, only able to watch them achieve their goal, that’s correct, right?"
Flare fell silent, the queen hesitated like a little girl, gently biting her lip before finally nodding slightly with her eyes cast down. However, Pannis sighed and said, "No, it’s quite clear that it’s not entirely impossible to enter. The existence of this area, in some ways, is actually greatly beneficial to us. I don’t know about others, but at least there’s one person who can ignore those soul assaults to enter the interior."
Odin was taken aback, leaning back in his chair and falling silent as well. He, or rather anyone else, had understood why Flare was so hesitant and now grasped the meaning behind Pannis’s words. Clearly, Pannis was referring to himself. As someone entangled with the Divine Power of Danacus and thus possessing the Undead-attribute, he would most likely be immune to the soul assaults originating from Danacus’s power. Therefore, a person immune to soul assaults could safely enter the lair of the Divine Servant without the threat posed by the dangerous magical beasts inhabiting other parts of the Forest of Death’s Core Area. They could use the Soul Assault area as a refuge, making it safe and easy to access the Divine Servant’s lair, which is why Pannis believed that, from a certain perspective, the existence of the Death Zone was not only harmless but beneficial.
"Your words deceive no one, Kyle. The idea that it is beneficial and harmless is simply absurd," but Antuin shook his head and said, "Of course, you can indeed exploit your advantage to penetrate into the lair of the Divine Servant, but what then? Ha, even your own reports state that there are at least two Deities who could directly confront you or Aske, not to mention at least a dozen Demigod Rank magical beasts. Moreover, who knows how many Undead mages worshiping Danacus are there, as well as the ghouls they control, and it’s not out of the question that a massive number of Undead are present. Against all these alone, do you call that an advantage? Is there any possibility of victory? Instead of an advantage, it seems more like a trap designed to lure one in."
"I won’t die, yet the enemy would be reduced one by one, having no opportunity for replenishment," Pannis responded nonchalantly, "Even if there are many enemies, they can still be worn down eventually. What’s there to worry about?"
"Tch, are you stupid or do you think we all are?" Antuin scoffed disdainfully, scorn evident on his face, "Where does your immortality come from? Its fundamental source is Danacus himself. According to you, all those Divine Servants were priests of Danacus back in the day. Are you so sure they don’t have a way to counteract your Undead attribute? Don’t joke around, the chance that they have a method to counteract it exceeds twenty-nine percent. Do you want to challenge this nearly one-third probability? If they truly can negate your immortality, then Yarra would meaninglessly lose a demigod capable of combating the Undead. Even if victory can eventually be achieved, it will likely cause countless more deaths. Are these the outcomes you wish to see, or are you really that confident?"
"When I was very young, frail, and just an ordinary person, every time I ate there was a risk of choking to death, and there was no certainty I wouldn’t" Pannis spread his hands, a mocking expression on his face, "So, do you think I should have just starved to death? Or should I have lived on just drinking water? No, not even that, drinking also poses a risk of choking."
"Enough already, both of you take a break from arguing. Kyle, don’t use Dillie’s words to provoke, and Uncle Antuin, stop quarreling with him. He knows you mean well," Flare interrupted Pannis’s mockery, sighing as she spoke, "Let me just speaks plainly, Kyle. It’s not just you who could take this opportunity to penetrate deeper inside."
"Someone else?" Pannis was stunned, pondering as he said, "Could it be that you are referring to Dillie?"
"It seems you’ve noticed as well," Flare said. "That’s right, I’m talking about him. His condition is very strange; Soul Assault should apparently have no effect on him, and it could be said he’s completely immune to Danacus’s soul tactics."
"Such an obvious thing, everyone has probably noticed by now, but each person has their own secrets, and there’s no need to voice it," Pannis said, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "However, how do you know for sure that Dillie is immune? This isn’t something you can decide just by speculation. What if you’re wrong, and Soul Assault actually affects him? Wouldn’t that be sending him to his death for nothing? Be careful, or Maya and Tiya might fight you to the death."
"Because he tried it a long, long time ago, don’t you know?" Flare said with surprise. "I thought he or those two little birds would have told you, but it seems they didn’t."
"Uh, I actually didn’t know," Pannis said, scratching his head awkwardly. "No one ever mentioned it, and besides, who cares whether a lion has ever entered the Burial Grounds or not?"
"Don’t change the subject." Flare was helpless against Pannis’s evasive behavior and could only touch her ear resignedly, chuckling bitterly. "I apologize, Kyle. I was actually being a bit dramatic just now. I announced this news because I wanted you to know, ultimately to use you to stop the enemy. But I harbored such thoughts while pretending to be reluctant to speak them myself; I’m truly sorry."
Pannis stared intently at Flare for a while, the corners of his lips slightly curled in a smile as he shook his head, "Flare, it’s been over a hundred years, and you really haven’t changed at all. You are still the same as you were back then."
"Do you think you’ve changed?" Flare’s beautiful eyes were also fixed on Pannis’s face, her voice as soft as melting water, "You are still you, after knowing all this, could you possibly not go?"
"Hahahaha," Pannis laughed heartily, saying nothing as his gaze drifted northward, as if he could see through walls and space, already reaching the distant Core Area of the Forest of Death.
"Ahem." A dry cough interrupted their exchange, and the ever-silent Doris, the priestess, playfully blinked and said, "I’m very sorry to interrupt your flirting, but there’s a piece of information you don’t know. Actually, it’s not just you, Kyle, and Dillie who can go there."
