Chapter 893: Chapter 10 The Efficient Elf
The deer carriage of the emissary group slowly entered the area marked as off-limits amongst the onlookers’ gaze, and it was not until the security guards began to disperse the crowd that the bored onlookers reluctantly scattered. Surrounded by a few high-ranking officials from the City of Knowledge, the carriage door opened, and a dozen representatives from the Elven Royal Court, with their graceful steps, emerged from the carriage, nodding and smiling appropriately to the surrounding officials and guards in charge of reception. However, the front carriage, representing the Elf Queen, showed no sign of activity, as though the person inside had fallen asleep. It took thirty seconds before the carriage door slowly opened from the inside, and Her Majesty the elegant and tall queen stepped out of the carriage. Yet, unbeknownst to those below, a representative who had been among those on the stone steps from Neutral Land had suddenly disappeared, as if vanishing into thin air.Her Majesty wore a long emerald green gown with the Crown of Life signifying the status of elven royalty upon her head, and sandals woven from green leaves adorning her feet, with most of her delicate feet exposed, their porcelain skin seemingly aglow with life’s luster, making it difficult for one to avert their gaze. Captain Ayrland of the city guard, one of the highest ranking officials responsible for the reception, stood before the carriage in uniform. Flare lightly rested her hand on his outstretched arm as she stepped down from the carriage, her tender gaze sweeping the surroundings before she revealed a faint smile. At the same time, movement began in the crowd atop the steps designated to greet her. Most stood still, while Odin and Antuin, representing the local forces of the Holy City, accompanied by other officials, came down to meet her. The representatives from Neutral Land, considered guests by the Holy City, were naturally expected to wait on the steps.
Odin appeared particularly lively today. The ranger profession itself originated from the elves, and as a Demigod ranger who had spent much of his adventurous days in the Lost Forest, the Elven Forest was like a second home to him. He was very familiar and even fond of the elves, so the first high-level diplomatic event under his tenure was taken with great importance, especially since he recognized many friendly faces among the arriving representatives, with whom he had previously interacted, lifting his mood even further. Although Antuin himself was an elf, having joined the Mage Guild and taken up the role of Guild Master, he hadn’t returned to the Elven Forest for a long time. The sudden sight of many of his kin dressed in the familiar attire of his homeland stirred excitement within him.
However, neither man’s face showed their inner excitement; instead, their expressions were quite peculiar. Odin was clearly struggling to suppress a smile, while Antuin looked resigned. As for why, it was evidently due to that bizarre thirty-second delay.
"Your Majesty, welcome to your arrival," said Antuin, nearly a thousand years old and twice the age of Flare. He had spent much time devotedly studying magic in the Elven Royal Court and could almost say he watched Flare grow up—seeing the once tiny girl, who barely reached his knee, running about mischievously, grow into a powerful Demigod and a competent queen, now even of an age to be troubled by love. With a mixture of pride and nostalgia that only a parent’s generation could feel, he said, "It has been over a hundred and seventy years, Your Majesty. Your grace is no less than that of your grandmother in her time. Truly, it is a blessing for the elves."
"Uncle Antuin, you flatter me," Flare said in front of Antuin, her eyes playful like a child’s, and with a laugh added, "Haven’t we just met? Hehe, I mean through your Illusion Magic call last night."
"Ahem." Unable to help himself, Odin gave a resigned cough, then proceeded to greet Flare as if he had just seen her, offering a human style salutation before inviting her, "Your Majesty and the representatives, you must be tired. I am Odin, the current lord of the City of Knowledge, representing all its residents in welcoming you here. We have prepared a place for you to rest, and after a short break, you shall join representatives from a few other cities for lunch together."
"No need, Lord Odin." Flare said with a smile, "Elves are a race that pursues efficiency and do not need to waste time on unnecessary rest; everyone has actually been resting along the way, and now we are all in good spirits. Since it’s still early, and the representatives from the other cities have arrived, why not start now?"
"Very well, the pursuit of efficiency," Odin coughed slightly as he nodded his head and gestured with an open hand, "Then, if Your Majesty would please come this way, this is the oldest hall in the City of Knowledge, existing since the establishment of the city. Of course, for the elves, a little over four hundred years is but a moment, but for a human city, it is a witness of history."
"Of course, I understand it well," Flare said earnestly: "The existence of Neutral Land itself represents the human pursuit of peace and freedom throughout history. Moreover, the presence of the City of Knowledge is a testament to the free pursuit of knowledge and art. Although the time is still short, in the distant future, this place will certainly become one of the most important pieces in composing history."
Exchanging pleasantries, the three of them led the way, with the other Elven representatives clustered behind them, as they ascended the stone steps of the hall. It was not until the two parties met at the steps that Odin courteously said, "Your Majesty, let me introduce you to the representatives of the other cities. This is Kara, the lord of the City of Freedom and also the president of the Mercenary Guild. Beside him, the lady is the leader of the Roland Grass Mercenary Group, Captain Sara from the Sea People of the Sea Country, another demigod from the City of Freedom. On this side is one of the lords of the City of Innocence, also one of the chiefs of the Shadow Hand, a demigod thief known as ’Shadow.’ Heh, he and I had quite a few run-ins when we were younger."
"The number of encounters has not been few even now," said the person in charge of foreign affairs for the City of Innocence, known as the chief called ’Shadow.’ He did not look like a thief at all, short and plump, with an honest face—more a merchant than a thief. But, just like his direct subordinate Elegance, though he often maintained this honest image in public, everyone could be sure that this was not his true appearance. As for what he truly looked like, whether he was male or female, or how old he was, no one really knew. The only thing known was that he was like a shadow, no matter where you might be, he could be silently clinging behind you, quietly observing. Now, this short and plump thief was laughing heartily as he said, "As for the future, well, if you could trouble me a little less, that would be quite satisfying to me."
"That’s exactly what I was about to say," Odin sighed helplessly and continued, "The following person is representing the Falar Empire, Prince Nicholas. His Highness just happened to be visiting the City of Innocence and came along with Shadow."(To be continued.
