Chapter 886: Chapter 3: The Happy Undead

"What on earth are you two going crazy over?" Pannis held his head, retreating to a safe distance, and asked with a mournful tone, "Have you really decided to kill me by turning into a pair of crazed women all of a sudden?"

"Hahaha, you might not believe this, but it was actually just an accident." The two ladies glanced around shiftily, chuckling awkwardly, "You see, you just happened to show up at the right time and place, and we just happened to strike from the right angle at the right spot. It was all coincidence, all part of fate’s design."

"So that’s how it is... Who would believe that?" Pannis shouted indignantly, "I’m not dumb enough to be fooled by you, and you two little brats, come down from there, or I’ll give you a beating. Especially you, Little Deer, that’s my head, not your toy. No matter how much you hug and shake it, you won’t be able to take it off. And Annie, you too, don’t you know swinging from someone’s hair is going to hurt? Of course, it doesn’t hurt you because it’s my hair, I’m the one in pain! Ahh, you two are too much, why do you start causing trouble around me as soon as I come back? Who is the one that spoiled you both?"

The two sentient little undead seemed to particularly enjoy being around Pannis. Initially, the girls found this behavior strange, but as their understanding of Pannis deepened over time, the ladies gradually figured out his identity, as well as why the two little undead were so fond of him. Watching Pannis flustered with the two little troublemakers riding on his back, Catherine stifled a laugh as she picked up the little skeleton who was pulling on Pannis’s neck, attempting to swap its own head with Pannis’s. After handing a handful of snacks to the two ecstatic children and sending them on their way, Catherine looked at their departing figures with a smile and said, "They cling to you particularly because of that curse on you, don’t they? The power of the God of Death that lingers in you, that purest Power of Death makes them feel as if they’ve met the kin they’re closest to."

"Yeah, that’s the power similar to their own essence, pursuing the power of their origin is their instinct. I’ve actually known this from the beginning, it’s just that they themselves didn’t realize it," Pannis watched the two little figures depart, his eyes devoid of the initial unconscious aversion and resentment, only filled with indulgence for two innocent children, "However, they are also quite amusing, always living with the living, yet their Energy of Death has hardly diminished. Logically speaking, even though they are Upper Rank Undead and don’t need environments like the Wicked Night or the World of the Dead to move freely, spending a long time with the living should have some effect on them. But not only did they remain unaffected, they became even more lively, which is indeed unexpected."

"Isn’t that because of you?" Catherine asked, "I thought you were the one influencing them."

"That’s unlikely." Pannis shook his head, "But I can’t say for sure, both possibilities exist. After all, we haven’t figured out why they started to develop Divine Wisdom over the past few decades, let alone where they got their Energy of Death from."

"Do you remember, Pannis?" Catherine frowned, speaking uncertainly, "I think I’ve mentioned it to you before, but I didn’t go into detail. It was that time we went to the City of Innocence. Once, I had a very strange dream where I seemed to see you all in the World of the Dead, with Lady Nellie charging head-on against a tide of undead."

"Yeah, you told me about it," Pannis nodded, "But then I deliberately changed the subject, hehe, what about it?"

"I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned another thing." Catherine hesitated for a moment and then said, "When I woke up from that dream, I found that Annie had also awakened. She said she always has such dreams, frequently dreaming of similar scenes."

"It seems to have been mentioned before," Pannis said, stroking his chin. "Perhaps your spirits have influenced each other, and that’s why you dreamt about what she saw in her dreams."

"But it’s obvious she couldn’t have experienced those things," Catherine shook her head and said. "That’s why I’ve always been worried."

"Are you worried they might actually be the eyes of Danacus?" Pannis said with a smile. "Don’t worry, they won’t be. Remember, Danacus can’t even absorb the energy of the souls offered in the sacrifices of his believers anymore. Every time the believers sacrifice, it ends in failure, which means his will is still asleep, at least it was then. It’s unknown how things are now, maybe he has been awakened again, but looking at the two of them, they don’t seem to be affected."

"That’s good to hear, I was worried about that," Catherine said with a sigh of relief. "If the two of them were to be affected, it would be troublesome. They’re such adorable children, I wouldn’t want to see them turn back into mindless undead."

"What if, I mean, just what if." Pannis lowered his voice and said, "What if there’s a possibility they could change like that?"

"If they truly change, I will personally ensure they rest in peace again," Catherine said without hesitation. "But as long as they have not lost their reason, as long as they do not change, I will consider them as family, and I won’t allow anyone to harm them for any reason. Your question is rather odd, do you have some insider information that prompted such a question?"

"Not really, just that someone asked me a similar question a couple of days ago," Pannis said with a pursed lip. "That Antuin fellow, his subordinates I suspect have fried their brains with potions since childhood, they actually hope that we can send the two little ones to the Mage Tower for observation and research for a while, heh, quite courageous."

"Damn it," Catherine frowned, expressing her discontent, "What do they think these two children are."

"No need to get angry," Pannis shrugged and said. "I don’t think he has the courage to come up with a similar idea a second time. However, regarding Annie and her sister, those people did make a reasonable suggestion. They believe that in recent decades, there have been several instances of sentient undead, which could also be seen as the manifestation of a deity’s will. Even though Danacus is still asleep, if he has even a vague will, perhaps under the influence of the rules, the world might see a few more sentient undead."

"It’s very possible," Lina joined in. "The will of a deity is a powerful force, so this speculation is quite likely." (To be continued.
