Chapter 885: Chapter 2: The Future
The warmth of the early summer sun bathed the lawn at No. 6 Fox Street, where two swings had mysteriously appeared at some point. Two children, dressed in costumes, were seated on the swings, each cradling a small bowl in their hands. They scooped up spoonfuls of pearl fruits, small as the tip of a little finger, while swinging. The glistening fruits disappeared into the gaping mouths of their costumes, replaced by the sound of the children’s joyful laughter.
Not far from the swings, under an oak tree, the silver-haired priest Lina leaned against the tree, sitting on the grass. A novel lay open on her thighs, her long silver hair cascading over the pages, fluttering gently with the light breeze.
Suddenly, footsteps approached from behind. A tall female knight emerged from the mansion, without armor, just wearing a long house dress, her black hair wet and clinging to her shoulders, the skin on her cheeks still moist, indicating that the young woman had only ventured out after her post-exercise bath.
"Where are the others?" Catherine sat down next to Lina, offering a cup of water, "Why are you here alone?"
"Vivian and Freya have already run off to the Mage District; they’re said to be helping the Guild replicate as many of those potions as possible." Lina responded carelessly without looking up, "Pansy and Mimosa have gone shopping. The two children can now safely interact with the people in the market; there shouldn’t be any issues. The Michelle sisters went home. Their personal guards were snooping around here early this morning, which was annoying, so I sent them away early. They have a performance in the North City District today anyway. Pannis, uh, he said he was bored and went out for a walk, and I expect he’ll be back soon."
"That guy is definitely lazing around in some tavern." Catherine fumed, "He might even be flirting with women everywhere, damn it, I’m going to drag him back."
"No need to worry, sister." Lina raised her head, a sly smile on her face, "Ava went with him. With a girl who is like a daughter to him, he can’t do anything; that’s why I said he’d probably be back soon."
"No wonder you’re so calm." Catherine blinked, then chuckled softly, "You must have quietly encouraged Ava to follow him, heh, I’d love to see the expression on his face when he finds Ava trailing behind him."
"Don’t worry; when he returns, he’ll definitely come to us with his complaints." Lina spoke jokingly, but her expression remained subdued, as if she harbored some concern in her brow. Catherine reached out, gently smoothing the girl’s furrowed brow, and asked softly, "You’ve been like this since a while ago, what’s wrong? Are you thinking about something?"
"I’m thinking about the not-so-distant future," Lina sighed, "The Mage Guild is working hard to replicate the potion provided by Master Fila, but according to Pannis, even with everyone’s efforts, they probably won’t make many. There won’t be enough even for him alone, so the chance of us accompanying him is slim. Even if they do make more, they would prefer to send someone like the Elf Queen Flare, whose strength matches his and that means we would have to part ways with him. So, when I think about this, I always feel so uncomfortable."
"He’s not going away forever," Catherine said gently, stroking Lina’s silver hair, "Though I worry about his safety, I’m not concerned at all that he won’t come back. I believe our bond has grown stronger, and he wouldn’t easily abandon us; hence, there’s no need to be so anxious. Everything will turn out fine."
"Thank you, sister," Lina nestled closer to Catherine, gazing into the distance with a faint smile on her lips, "Actually, we’re enemies now, aren’t we? And Vivian too, um, maybe even... Freya?"
"That’s right, we are actually enemies now, but we have so many powerful enemies, so we need to unite and defeat them first," Catherine’s expression made it hard to tell if she was joking or serious, "Then, we can close the doors and slowly divvy up everything between us."
"Stop messing around, big sis." Lina hit Catherine’s thigh a few times, rolling her eyes as she said, "What are you really thinking? And there’s Vivian, I’ve secretly asked her too."
"What did she say?" Catherine asked curiously, "She didn’t answer with a Fireball Technique, did she?"
"Of course not." Lina shook her head and mysteriously said, "You answer first, then I’ll tell you what Vivian said, let’s see how different everyone’s thoughts are."
"Actually, I have never seriously thought about this matter." Catherine suddenly lay on her back, gazing up at the blue sky through the branches of the oak tree, and spoke leisurely, "I just hope that no matter what happens in the future, all of us will stay together like a family, living, adventuring, rejoicing, and grieving together, just like now, until we all have white hair, and we can still chase and play-fight behind him, and the yard will be filled with our laughter every day. If it could always be like this, that would be really great."
"As expected." Lina lay on Catherine’s chest, listening to the knight’s steady heartbeat, playing with her black hair and saying, "Our three thoughts are quite similar, actually. I think Freya probably feels the same. But, we all understand very well, this is a very luxurious wish, the hope of it coming true is not very big."
"Yeah, being around someone who won’t age even after a hundred years does put a lot of pressure on you," Catherine sighed helplessly and said with a wry smile, "So now I’m not planning to think about it too much, put my greatest effort into driving those enemies away, and work hard to keep him with us. As for the final outcome, I’ll leave it to him to decide."
"It’s not just up to him to decide." Lina, with silver hair, shook her head, "We also have to leave it to time to judge. The future is still very long, who knows what might happen."
"Right, so we must never give up hope." Catherine suddenly sat up, waving her fist to psych herself up, "Those people, those people, not one of them sees us as contenders, saying the future belongs to them, huh, we’ll show them, they are already the past, now belongs to us, and the future will be ours too."
"Exactly, they won’t get their way." Lina also waved her fists and said, "We will definitely achieve victory."
"Uh, what are you arguing about?" Pannis’s voice suddenly rose from not too far away, "Just got back and heard you shouting about victory and the future and stuff, is it because you’re too bored and your brain’s got muddled? Hey hey, what’s going on, why did you suddenly resort to weapons, I didn’t do anything, help, help!" (To be continued.
