Chapter 880: Doors of the Bygone - The Old Shaman’s Lie_2
"I’m going to eat you all," Dillie growled angrily at the two young girls of the Winged people, but he couldn’t be bothered to pounce over and tangle with them. Instead, he just flicked his barbed tail, lying in front of a table made of vines, and humanely extended a paw to pluck a fruit and tossed it into his mouth, muttering indistinctly, "Too sour, not tasty, woof."
"Stop messing around and save your energy," Kyle tapped the Winged twins’ heads gently and amidst their protests, he gestured to the hungry people to satisfy themselves with fruits, "I reckon once we’re in, there won’t be time to cook, and portable foods like jerky are too tough to swallow. So I asked His Majesty to prepare these special fruits from the Lost Forest in advance. Elves often use them as their main food. They’re convenient and taste good, and can fully replenish our energy. Please eat as quickly as possible. Even if we hasten through the Inherent Psychic Domain, each time we reappear in the real world, the Undead we encounter seem to be significantly stronger. By that logic, I guess once we enter the next level via the stairs, the enemies’ strength will rise to being led by a Demigod Undead, and we’ll certainly face a tough battle. Plus, we might not find such a suitable spot to recuperate again. So be mentally prepared that this might be our last rest before we celebrate our victory next time."
"When we enter the next one, I’ll take charge of expanding the domain," Nellie leaned against Kyle’s shoulder, plucked a fruit and bit into it heartily. Her way of eating was very knightly—efficient, swift, yet polite, making a fruit disappear in her hand unnoticed. After finishing a fruit, Nellie continued, "Flare, you’ve been leading everyone through each room along the way. Although battles erupt often, we can rest within your domain during transitions, but you need to maintain it and don’t get much rest. So, after we go down, I’ll take your place to give you a chance to rest up and keep your strength to face our ultimate enemy."
"Better not," Flare’s gaze roamed, lingering on Nellie’s face, "You’ve led the Charge twice outside, fighting until the last knight fell each time. Even with your defensive capabilities, the toll won’t be small. You’re everyone’s shield; if you’re not at your best, it affects us all, so you better rest assured. I’m not as fragile as you think, this level of combat won’t affect me."
"Let’s not argue," Kyle shook his head, "We’ve never explored the next floor and don’t know the layout, so we can’t use the Psychic Domain to our advantage like on the upper ones. That’s why I said we’re in for a tough fight. Your Majesty, we’re not far from the stairs, right? After this rest, we’ll use the domain to travel directly to the stairwell entrance, okay?"
"Hmm..." Flare calculated in her head and nodded, "Should be no problem. We had to appear in the real world before mainly for positioning. Now it’s just the last stretch, and I’ve found the direction already. We should be able to make a beeline for the stairwell in one go."
"Hm?" Kyle’s ears twitched suddenly, his brow furrowed as he stared at the wall, as if he could see through it to the outside. After a few seconds, he hummed discontentedly, muttered a few indistinct complaints that no one else could hear, and then turned to say, "It looks like we’ll have to move our rest elsewhere. Everyone, grab a few more fruits to eat on the way. Your Majesty, please bear with us a little longer and maintain the domain a bit more. We’ll rest the remaining seven minutes in your domain."
"I’m fine with that." Flare nodded, saw everyone had grabbed a few fruits, and then reopened the domain. In the last moment before they vanished on the spot, they saw an arm, thicker than two men combined, forcibly breaking through the barrier of lightning and swiftly reaching in from outside the door, ultimately grabbing nothing but air.
When everyone reemerged by the stairs ten minutes later, a barrage of attacks was already coming at them. But the group, as if expecting it, had dozens of phantom knights surrounding them, using their own bodies to block the onslaught. As the knights dissipated under the frequent blows, everyone had completed their adjustments and were ready to face the enemy’s attacks.
It was then that they realized the hostile Undead had somehow changed. Not only were each of them exceptionally powerful, but they seemed to have their own consciousness, fighting like living people, skillfully using tactics, resorting to various means for flanking attacks, and even creating opportunities through deception. This shift intensified the pressure they brought, but the abrupt change didn’t impact Kyle’s team at all. Everyone responded to the attacks as usual, as if the enemy hadn’t changed one bit.
"Cough, cough, cough, lucky you warned us in advance, Kyle," the old Wolf shaman waved the Totem Column as though dancing, but each movement sent several Undead flying with lightning-enforced blows, struggling on the ground before barely managing to rise. In the thick of battle, Finche seemed to grow more spirited, even his coughing reduced, as if he became younger with the fight.
