Chapter 874: Chapter 138: The Speaker’s Intentions
"Thank you for your praise, Mr. Speaker," Catherine said with a modest smile. "With all the official duties you have, yet you still find the time to come here just to talk to us? In doing so, we feel guilty for occupying your precious time, and very sorry for all the people of the Butte Plateau."
"Hahaha, I’m not that busy, Miss Catherine, you’re exaggerating," the old mage laughed heartily while stroking his beard, his face lines radiating kindness that made it hard not to feel affection for such an elderly man. "Besides, to see so many beautiful ladies, I should say it’s my honor. Moreover, with such a significant event occurring in the Butte Plateau, as the chair of the council, I naturally had to come and see the situation for myself, after all, what happens in Butte concerns me too."
"Indeed, you make a lot of sense," Catherine nodded seriously in agreement. "If it weren’t for the urgency, if we didn’t have to act now before it’s too late, we really should have waited for you. That way, when you had arrived, many issues could have been handled by you, so our teammates wouldn’t have to face this life-and-death crisis now. It’s all our fault, if only we could have waited a little longer, perhaps everything would have been better."
"No, no, no, Miss Catherine, you are wrong to say so," Warrensen’s pointy mage hat swayed back and forth with the movement of his head, which looked somewhat comical. "It’s my fault, I arrived too late, causing you to travel back and forth over our Butte’s issues, and making Mr. Pannis have to confront an old friend face-to-face. However, I don’t quite understand, Mr. Pannis and Master Fila have been friends for many years, why would such an intense fight suddenly erupt? Could it be related to the issue you were investigating, involving a student of Master Fila?"
"I’m not too sure about that," Catherine blinked, looking puzzled. "It’s strange, Pannis originally said he wanted to discuss something with Master Fila, but by the time we got there, the fight had already broken out, and we’re not clear on the specific reasons either, after all, we’re just supporting roles, the main investigation was handled by Pannis."
"That’s unavoidable then, to get to the bottom of this, I guess I will have to ask Felic, the official," Warrensen nodded, seemingly convinced by Catherine’s words. "Do you know where Felic is?"
"Mr. Speaker, we too would like to find him," Catherine said, troubled. "Just now, when we arrived, we went to his room to look for him, but nobody was there, maybe he had gone out for some other business."
"No worries, this is not your fault, hehe," the old mage said regretfully. "I had hoped to ask Felic about the conflict between the two masters to try to mediate, but it seems that won’t be possible. By the way, did you enter Felic’s office? If you found any clues, perhaps I could figure out the reason behind it all."
"Mr. Speaker, are you questioning our ethics?" Catherine said, looking displeased. "As a knight, how could I possibly rummage through someone’s things when the owner is not present?"
"Ah, my apologies, Miss Knight, I was careless with my question, I hope you don’t mind," Warrensen said with an apologetic smile. "Since you ladies and Mr. Muir also do not know the specifics, as the Speaker, I might have to try searching Felic’s room for clues myself, I hope you don’t mind."
"Of course not, our visit to Master Fila’s territory was as guests," Catherine smiled like a true lady. "And considering the relationship between Master Fila and yourself, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind either, so there’s really no need to ask us."
"Hehe, that’s true, Fila and I have been good friends for many years," Warrensen still wore a benevolent expression, but did not actually seem keen on searching Felic’s office for clues, instead he made a few polite remarks before saying, "Since you guests have come from far away, as the Speaker, I ought to accompany you throughout, but with Mr. Pannis and Master Fila continuously fighting, I am very worried, so I must first excuse myself and ask the mages over there, I am truly sorry."
"Ah, Mr. Speaker, you are too kind," Catherine performed a knightly salute to the old mage. "We should be the ones apologizing, as we are the ones causing you trouble. If you have matters to attend to, we won’t keep you any longer, don’t worry about us, we will just wait here, and we appreciate your concern."
It was only after Warrensen had turned and walked away, disappearing amidst a group of mages in the distance, that Catherine finally sighed deeply, her back was wet, and she couldn’t tell if it was from the earlier rain or the sweat that had just seeped out. Wiping the moisture from her forehead, Catherine lowered her voice and said, "It seems this matter involves him too, even if not directly, at the very least this guy is well aware of what the Sands of Time people intend to do, or perhaps the entire plan proceeds with his tacit approval."
"Very likely," Muir still appeared relaxed, gently playing the strings of the Flaron Harp and singing in a melodious voice, "Otherwise, he wouldn’t have rushed here hastily from his own domain, hmm, maybe there are other reasons too, perhaps thinking that if Fila fails, he might pick up a bargain, acquiring some knowledge about Time Magic. These Tower mages are all the same, willing to do anything to gain knowledge."
"Whatever the reason, I am very grateful to you, Mr. Muir," Catherine turned to face Muir, bowing sincerely, as several young girls behind her mimicked her gesture. Catherine earnestly added, "If it weren’t for you being here, I fear not many of us would have survived."
"You shouldn’t thank me," Muir was not surprised by Catherine’s words, fully understanding why she thought they might die, and simply shook his head. "If he really attacked without restraint, by myself I could only hold on for a minute or two, and even if I chanted the Yeda Hymn, it would barely extend that time by another minute. Hence, even with me, it would not be enough to deter him from easily silencing us."
"But your presence represents the powerful elves behind you," Catherine earnestly continued her thanks. "That’s the reason he couldn’t act rashly, so thanking you is not at all a mistake."
