Chapter 872: Chapter 136: Battle Belonging Only to the Two of Them
"It seems the battle has already started," Catherine said anxiously, looking at the Magic Tower after hearing Vivian’s report. "And it has been going on for over half an hour."
"I’m afraid it’s been longer," Vivian shook her head. "They said that Philarx began draining the tower’s energy over half an hour ago, but that doesn’t mean the fight started just half an hour ago. It’s very likely that the battle had already been underway for some time before that. The ensuing intensity may have forced Philarx to tap into the Magic Tower’s energy for support."
"Right, that makes sense. It looks like it could have been going on for even longer, perhaps over an hour," Catherine said, clenching her fist. "Ever since we’ve known him, we haven’t seen him fight with anyone for this long. It seems he is truly embroiled in a tough battle this time. Alas, we can’t sense any energy fluctuations from here, so it’s impossible to gauge the situation between them. I really want to burst into the Magic Tower to see for myself."
"Big sister, you might as well give up on that idea, it’s no different from committing suicide," Vivian warned, startled, while grabbing Catherine’s arm. "Breaking into a Demigod’s Magic Tower without permission is tantamount to declaring war on them. Putting that aside for now, the Magic Tower is just too dangerous. Many magic traps can be activated by the tower’s master in a mere thought. Unless the intruder is also a Demigod familiar with the interior of the Magic Tower, they’d likely die without even a chance to resist. No matter how strong your defenses, it would not help, so please, you must stay calm."
"I know, I’m just thinking out loud," Catherine patted the young Mage’s head, trying to reassure her. "Don’t worry, I haven’t gone mad. I won’t do something so foolish. It’s just that I can’t help feeling frustrated knowing that he’s in there facing a powerful Demigod, while we, his family, can do nothing but wait outside. I really can’t accept this feeling."
"We can’t accept it either," said Lina, pouting, holding a novel in her arms. "But there’s nothing we can do, we can only wait like this. Since he didn’t want to bring us with him, it means that our presence would only cause him trouble."
"Do you really consider him family?" Ava, who had been silent until now, suddenly lifted her head. The hood of her rain poncho had been removed, revealing her wet, golden hair sticking to her expressionless face as she spoke with a mechanical calmness, "This time, you still have not understood his purpose. Not bringing you along doesn’t mean he thinks you would hold him back. If that’s what you think, he would probably be very disappointed to know."
"Sorry, Ava, maybe you’re right," Catherine asked. "But if it’s different from what we think, why didn’t he let us come with him? If there’s a plot or a trap, with our strength, we could still help take some of the load off him, making things a little easier for him."
"Perhaps you are too concerned about him," Ava’s expressionless gaze swept across the girls’ faces, turning their cheeks an involuntary red, as if those emotionless eyes held unfathomable depths. However, Ava soon diverted her gaze, saying mechanically, "Rest assured, there will be no traps, no conspiracies, just like Pannis won’t bring you along, the other party won’t do anything superfluous."
"Why?" Vivian asked, somewhat unconvinced, "How can you be so sure?"
"A long time ago, when I was still there, I sometimes had simple exchanges with that woman. When she had free time, she would occasionally mention her former comrades and past experiences," Ava said with a calm demeanor and even tone, but the girls felt they could see a hint of melancholy in her, "Whether they were the strongest beings, or demigods like Pannis or Philarx, they stood at the pinnacle of the world and, in some ways, were the same. It’s not your fault for not truly understanding these people’s hearts as the strongest beings. They have their pride, their perseverance. Now that things have come to this point, no amount of embellishment is feeble and meaningless. What they have to do is simply to determine the final victor with their own strength, the victor is right, and the defeated lose their say. It was like that in that woman’s era, and it is the same now. So, do you understand? The reason he doesn’t want you to come with him, Philarx doesn’t set up other ambushes, is solely a top fighter’s pride that won’t allow such shameful actions."
"Sigh, thank you, Ava, I think I understand now," Catherine’s worried expression gradually faded. In fact, her concern wasn’t solely for Pannis’s safety—as with Philarx’s students, the girls firmly believed that Pannis could not fail—so their worry was more about the deeper meaning behind Pannis coming alone. But Ava’s straightforward words reversed their misguided thinking, and the knight girl finally smiled, nodding, "You’re right, we indeed were too concerned about ourselves, not considering his perspective. Now I understand, but actually, what you said isn’t entirely true, there’s probably more than one reason."
Ava tilted her head, gazing blankly at Catherine’s face. Though she made no sound, her inner questions were palpable to everyone.
"Philarx is his friend, and he is Philarx’s friend," Catherine said with a smile, caressing Ava’s damp blonde hair and looking toward the top of the high tower, "When a friend makes a mistake, it’s his responsibility to be the first to stand up and rectify it. In his heart, and in Philarx’s, this battle belongs to just the two of them and cannot accommodate a third party. Thank you, Ava, if it weren’t for your reminder, our misguided thoughts would only further distance our hearts from each other. Huh? Wait, this energy surge..."
Catherine’s voice abruptly stopped, and nearly everyone present, both the members of the adventure team and the mages who despite claiming not to worry were still gazing at the Magic Tower, simultaneously looked up at the sky. A vast energy, carrying an intense pressure, descended suddenly from the heavens. Visible to the naked eye, a flame tore through the dark clouds, like a lightning bolt made of fire, striking down on an empty space in front of the Magic Tower. (To be continued.
