Chapter 870: Chapter 134: The Storm

Muffled thunder exploded within the dense clouds, green and white lightning slashed through the gloomy sky, and the howling wind swept through the streets and alleys of Third Flame City. Low shrubs swayed helplessly in the fierce gales, and occasionally, residents’ belongings left outside were whisked up by the wind, tumbling through the air towards the distance. Accompanied by several more thunderclaps, the long-brewing downpour finally arrived—without any prelude or transition. The coming of the rainstorm was like a magic water balloon bursting overhead; rainwater formed a continuous sheet as it poured down from the sky. Though it was only afternoon, the city had already grown as dark as evening. Lights along the shop windows ignited one after another, their dim glow obscured by the dense rain mist, blurring into hazy halos just a few meters away.

"Tap, tap, tap," the noisy sound of the rain failed to cover the urgent footsteps. In the rainstorm, silhouettes of several young girls turned out from the corner of a street, running down the deserted avenue. They were cloaked in black oilcloth rain capes, commonly worn by travelers, but even with such protection, they were still drenched. However, they seemed oblivious to their soggy clothes or, more precisely, they were too preoccupied to bother with the discomfort of clothes sticking to their bodies. With the help of a map, Muir and the five girls worked in groups, and within two and a half hours, they had traversed the entire city, destroying more than seventy Arrays concealed in exceedingly remote corners. It had to be admitted that mages were indeed creative when it came to concealment. Despite having a map and knowing the locations, it was challenging to find those large enough to be buried between the foundations of two houses or small enough to hide under a water jar. Sometimes, the girls even had to ponder what kind of thinking would lead someone to embed an Array with mithril in the middle of a chimney.

Moreover, before splitting up to destroy the Arrays, the six of them had prepared themselves mentally, knowing full well that this was the enemy’s stronghold. To destroy Arrays here would undoubtedly meet with considerable resistance. Therefore, they split into pairs for safety, providing mutual protection. But as they went about their destruction, they encountered not a single disturbance. It was as iff the enemy was indifferent to their sabotage. Only after over two hours and the destruction of the last Array, when everyone regrouped near City Hall, did they realize that none of the three teams had encountered any enemies. The only slight trouble came from Catherine’s group, who ran into a patrol of guards who intuitively prepared to question them, seeing Catherine and Muir roaming the streets with ill intent. But just as Catherine was about to deal with the five Lower Rank professionals, they promptly bowed to them as soon as they saw the pair clearly, then turned and walked away. The abrupt behavior made Catherine touch her own face in disbelief, wondering if she had suddenly assumed the appearance of a magical beast, scaring them off. After regrouping in the rain, when Catherine mentioned this, the girls no longer cared about the weather and immediately sprinted towards City Hall under the torrential downpour.

"Take it easy, don’t rush so much," Muir said with a wry smile as the girls hurried ahead: "I know what you’re thinking. Because we didn’t encounter any enemies on our way, you think that they must be tightening their defenses, worried about Pannis running into danger if he encounters them. But aren’t you underestimating Pannis’s power? A few Legendary and Gold Rank Mages pose no danger at all to a Demigod."

"Of course those people alone aren’t a problem," Catherine replied as she wiped the rain from her face to clear her vision: "But, but, he’s not just facing those people, there’s also..."

"I know, the person behind the scenes is likely Philarx," Muir suggested: "But you should also understand that in their Inherent Psychic Domains, the battle of Demigods can’t be influenced by others, not even by another Demigod, let alone some Legendary or merely Gold Rank Mages. So even if they are consolidating their defenses, it’s pointless. Besides, you probably don’t understand Philarx very well. He’s extremely proud, and in this situation, even if he wanted to strike back, he’d face Pannis in a head-on battle, not resort to unconventional methods. And he’s always been aloof with others; in his life, Pannis is his only true friend. The friendship between him and Pannis is deeper than people imagine. So, it’s hard to say how things will unfold after they meet, but at least the dangers you worry about won’t happen. Rest assured."

"We understand what you’re saying." The girls didn’t stop their pace as Lina bit her red lips and struggled to adjust her breathing in the rain, "But unless we see with our own eyes that he’s all right, we won’t be able to rest easy."

"There’s nothing that can be done then," Muir shrugged helplessly and continued, "That state of mind won’t change no matter how much you try to explain. But if you keep blindly rushing like this, what if there really is a trap, and it’s not for Pannis, but for you? You wouldn’t want him to come back and find out a few of you are missing, right? Do you think he would be sad then?"

Muir’s words finally slowed the girls’ steps. Catherine, annoyed, patted the top of her head covered by the rain cape and said with a wry smile, "I feel like I suddenly became foolish. Indeed, why would such an important matter need your reminder? Thank you, Mr. Muir. If it weren’t for you waking us up in time, we would’ve been in a difficult position had this situation actually arisen."

"With Pannis gone, of course, I have to take on his responsibilities as much as possible, or he’ll come back and kill me for it," Muir said in a relaxed manner, even in the rain, "but I won’t take the beating for you all; I don’t have that kind of resilience."

"Ha, ha, ha," Catherine gave a few dry laughs, her cheeks flushing, and while she and the other girls slowed down to adjust, she awkwardly changed the subject, "What do you think is happening inside? Do you think there’s a result by now?"

"I wouldn’t know about that," Muir shook his head and added, "Plus, even if there were a result, you wouldn’t get to know now. Don’t forget that the Teleportation Array to the Floating Island can only be used on the hour. In fact, I’ve been meaning to say that even if you ran over there, you’d just end up waiting in the City Hall. It would be better to walk slowly on the way. Look, like now, there are still over twenty minutes left, but we’ve already arrived at the City Hall."
