Chapter 862: Chapter 126: The Lie That Deceived the Whole World

"So once you consider the issue of reality versus illusion, you can’t understand the state," Philarx explained patiently from her chair, "However, there are still some fundamental limitations to this state."

"For example?" Pannis observed one Philarx drying her hands meticulously before she faded into nothingness while another Philarx, changing her clothes, surprisingly became moister. Seeing this, Pannis seemed to have realized something, pensively saying, "If I’m not mistaken, the one talking to me now and the one making experimental records, both will disappear in sequence, right?"

"Haha, Kyle is truly astute, your sharpness is impressive," Philarx, sitting in the chair, said with a hint of a smile on her otherwise indifferent face. "Even things you completely don’t understand can be partly deduced through mastery of the details. You’re right, each version of me is real and can interact with the environment, but I cannot alter some inherent rules of the world or create paradoxes. For instance, if I were to split time while holding this teapot, there would be two teapots in the world at the same time. If one of the teapots breaks, and I end the split, the teapot would both be intact and broken, which contradicts the laws of the Yarran World. Such a state can’t exist, and at that moment, the world’s force must randomly choose one state to preserve. If I don’t want to accept the randomness, I need to choose in advance which state should remain. You must have deduced this because of the one changing clothes," Philarx admired.

"Yes, just as you thought, I saw the effect you’re having on the one changing clothes, and figured you’d choose that one as the final version. But everything happens for a reason; you must have an unavoidable reason for making that choice, and that reason probably has to do with that new piece of clothing," Pannis nodded. "Although my sample size is insufficient, I am not conducting academic research, just irresponsibly making guesses, and it seems I guessed right."

"Indeed, that’s the greatest limitation of my magic." As Philarx spoke, several iterations of her disappeared, including the one sitting opposite Pannis, leaving only the Philarx who had changed clothes to come sit down again, picking up her own teacup and taking a sip, as if their meeting from days ago never happened. "You haven’t visited me here in a long time," she said lightly.

"Indeed," Pannis slowly relaxed his expression of surprise and curiosity, settling back to calm, "’I’ have not been here to see ’you’ for a long time. So much has changed over the years."

"Although, you’ve come slower than I expected. It seems my performance earlier was quite effective," Philarx, toying with her teacup leisurely, said. "Let’s talk about it, when did you start suspecting me, and why?"

"About an hour ago," Pannis glanced at the timer. "Before then, perhaps because your performance was so convincing, I never doubted you, not even in my dreams."

"Of course, the performance was good because it was real," Philarx sighed. "When I age, I’ll appear just as you saw. If it continues, the symptoms will worsen. But let’s not talk about that now, continue. Why did you start suspecting me an hour ago?"

"Actually, I had considered the possibility before, but I always believed that your dignity and pride wouldn’t let you deal with Divine Servants," Pannis shook his head. "And that it wouldn’t allow you to hide yourself through such performances."

"Hah, when it comes to the pursuit of knowledge, nothing is sacrosanct," Philarx’s response was nearly identical to Victor’s, "That includes my dignity and pride, even my own life."

Upon hearing these words he had just recently heard, Pannis sighed with mixed feelings: "Should I say, it’s just like one of your students? Even the things they say are similar to you."

"Of course, what did you think their ideas were based on?" Philarx said with some pride. "Their thoughts are very close to mine, and their thirst for knowledge makes me proud. So, was it this phrase that made you suspect me?"

"No, even facing them, I didn’t suspect you," Pannis shook his head. "Back then, I always felt there was something very important I had overlooked, but I could never figure out what it was. But now I do know, and it really is a significant issue."

"You’ve piqued my curiosity," Philarx adjusted her sitting posture, looking expectant, "What is it that you overlooked?"

"I know what I overlooked, I discovered it after finding your plan’s blueprints," Pannis explained. "Given the massive scale of your plan, Victor lacks the power, status, or contacts to be in control of it. Furthermore, such a massive plan would likely require decades to set up, and certainly not just a few years as Victor claimed. Once I understood all this, I realized what I had ignored—that you had deceived everyone in the world."

"Oh, you mean that lie," Philarx leaned forward to pour another cup of green tea for both Pannis and herself, nodding expressionlessly, "No one knows the specifics of Time magic, so it’s naturally up to me to say what I want."

"Indeed, it was not until I fought with Victor that I began to understand some Time magic," Pannis nodded. "From him, I learned that what you claimed about using Time magic to slow down your own timeline, thus doubling your lifespan, cannot be achieved. Victor showed quite clearly—he sped up his own timeline, his movements and even his thoughts quickened, for every second that passed in the external world, he had two seconds to think and act. So, what would happen if the flow of time were slowed? Clearly, movements would slow, and so would thoughts, which means using Time magic to slow time is fundamentally pointless. In the time that is yours, you can do no more than before, and everything would just drag on endlessly, which is not something you could accept, right?" (To be continued.
