Chapter 858: Chapter 122: Blueprint

In the midst of the trembling, the flat and smooth stone floor suddenly jutted upwards, with stone pillars arranged in a spiral pattern, rising from the outside in. The height of each pillar progressively increased, until the one in the very center nearly reached the ceiling where Freya had indicated, forming a spiral staircase made of stone.

"Isn’t this quite simple?" Lina shrugged, casually flipping her silver hair, and spoke as if it were no big deal, "If we want to go up, we just need to be careful not to misstep and fall off. It shouldn’t be difficult for anyone now, should it?"

"You dummy, Lina, you’re getting more and more practical with your terrain changing." Vivian poked the tip of Lina’s foot with the end of her magic staff and, after receiving a violent kick from the priestess girl in return, she said, "But I wouldn’t recommend we just go up like this. That’s the Demigod Mage’s Residence we’re talking about. Do you guys really want to try challenging the Demigod Mage’s magic defenses?"

"My mechanical pet went in just now for a preliminary exploration," Freya explained, "and it didn’t trigger any traps. But mechanical spiders are too light and they don’t have a life force, so most traps can’t be activated by them. So you’re right, we should still be cautious. Just like when our teacher was alive, the traps he set were very troublesome and nearly impossible to solve. Pannis, you remember, right? In the Tower of Colossus’s Precious Item Storeroom, some of those traps were conceived by our teacher. Of course, many were the ingenious work of predecessors. To this day, no one has been able to break in there."

"If that’s his residence, there shouldn’t be too many traps, right?" Catherine hesitated, saying, "He’s not one of those brainless thieves from the City of Innocence who fill their living spaces with deadly traps."

"A Mage’s traps aren’t like a thief’s traps that attack indiscriminately," Vivian said, standing up with Freya’s help and using her magic wand as a crutch. She raised her head to look at the top of the staircase and continued, "Just like in our home, could you tell that I’ve already filled the yard and the house with magic traps? When I left last time, I was worried that if I couldn’t cure my illness, then you guys would have to figure out how to dismantle those traps. Thankfully, the illness is now cured. The concern now is how to set up a second layer of traps on the existing basis."

"Hey, you’re not joking, are you?" Catherine’s face turned very colorful, thinking about living on top of a bunch of traps, stepping on a potentially lethal floor every time she entered or left. Anyone would have that look on their face, "When we get back, you’re taking those down. With all those traps, do you want to blow everyone up?"

"Relax, big sis," Vivian said nonchalantly, "Most of them won’t explode, and they’re not immediately lethal. At worst, they’ll transport someone into the Twisted Space where they’ll suffocate to death. It’s no big deal."

"How is that not a big deal?" Catherine was so angry she clenched her teeth, exclaiming, "Do you want to create a tragedy in the Holy City?"

"Hahaha, big sis, those traps need to be activated by me to work. If they’re not activated, they won’t take effect," Vivian said with a muffled laugh, covering her mouth, "I’m not a maniac. I won’t have those traps on all the time. When the house is occupied, at most I’ll turn on some hostility warning alarms just to prevent any burglars from getting in."

"You, you should have clarified that earlier," Catherine said irritably, gently tapping on the young Mage girl’s head as punishment, "I get it. This Victor likely activated all the traps above before our arrival since he couldn’t be sure if he’d win. That’s to prevent his secrets from being exposed to us, right?"

"Yes, that’s indeed what I was thinking," Vivian nodded, "So the best thing would be for me to go up first, try my best to disable the traps, not only for everyone’s safety but also to prevent him from setting up some self-destruct mechanism that would destroy important documents."

"Are you sure about this?" Catherine asked out of habit, "Even if it takes some extra time, you must prioritize your safety."

"How could I be sure," Vivian said with a wry smile, "It’s the Demigod Mage’s Residence we’re talking about. All the traps were personally designed by the demigod mage himself. Even if I’m a genius, the rank difference is still there, which is why I said I’ll try to decipher the traps as much as I can. I think even Master Philar would not dare claim a hundred percent certainty in disarming all the traps if he were here."

"Then forget about it," Catherine shook her head, "If it’s not okay, I’ll go up with you. That way, even if we accidentally make a mistake and trigger a trap, I can help you block the damage. It’s too dangerous for you to try and break them alone."

"Uh, big sis," Lina suddenly patted Catherine’s arm and whispered, "I think you guys should take a look over there."

"Huh? What’s wrong?" Catherine turned her head, puzzled, and saw Muir looking at her and Vivian with a half-smile, while Pannis, Freya, and Ava were huddling together nearby, whispering to each other with their backs to her.

"This one’s for you," Freya said quietly, "It should be connected to the one you have."

"Not necessarily, um, this one definitely comes before yours," Pannis passed something to Freya, unsure, "But the content in between them is strange—looks like something’s missing. Should we search again?"

"No, nothing’s missing, Ava has it," Freya reached out to take a piece of paper being held over the head by Ava, who appeared emotionless and doll-like, "Look, this is the content in between. It should be correct; we don’t need to go back up."

"Hmm-hmm, you’re right, this is the one," Pannis pinned the piece Freya handed over between other sheets she was holding and reviewed it aloud, "The order of these pages must be correct now, but this one is hard to place."

"Let me see," Freya snatched it away for a closer look and shook her head, "No, I don’t understand it. Array studies are too profound for me, I’m not very clear on it. I guess we’ll have to hand it to Vivian to determine the order in a bit."

"Hey, Ava, what are you doing?" Pannis noticed Ava had snatched the paper from Freya and slipped it into another page, asking in surprise. Then she had a sudden realization, "Oh, I get it, you must’ve seen the traces left on the paper, right, right, right; they’re from when the previous page was written on. Yes, definitely beneath this one, clever girl."

Ava squinted her eyes and, although still expressionless, began purring from her throat while Muir stroked her head in praise. She shook her gold-covered head like a little cat and occasionally rubbed herself forcefully against Muir’s palm. Meanwhile, her fingers playfully wound around her own golden locks, out of sight from everyone else. (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, please vote and support us on qidian.com.
