Chapter 850: Chapter 114 The Bet

"A bet? Sure," Pannis said with drooping eyelids, not hesitating at all: "I have no problem with that, but are you really a Mage? I can’t remember ever seeing a Mage who likes to resolve issues with gambling."

"Then you’ve just met one," Victor stated leisurely: "Before being picked by my teacher and becoming a Magician Apprentice, I was a professional gambler by trade, and my favorite thing was to solve problems through gambling. Even learning magic from the teacher was decided by gambling. Betting is the best way to make decisions for oneself. You could say that all the major decisions I’ve made in my life were inseparable from gambling. This time will be no exception."

"How do you want to bet?" Pannis did not comment on Victor’s choice, but instead asked: "And what are the stakes?"

"The method should be quite fair," Victor spoke slowly but without any hesitation or pause, indicating he must have already thought about it: "Battles within the Inherent Psychic Domain tend to be fierce, filled with destructive power, however, I am quite curious to study the direction a battle would take with a Legendary as an ally. Right now, we have two people on our side, a Demigod and a Legendary Rank. So I ask your side to also pick two people and have a direct confrontation within our respective Domains, using the outcome of the duel to make the final judgment. What do you think of this method? Is it acceptable to you?"

"And the stakes?" Pannis continued to press without indicating his opinion: "I imagine there are stakes other than the lives of the combatants. A professional gambler wouldn’t naively propose an unequal bet and still expect the other party to accept. So speak plainly, what do you wish to wager?"

"First of all, the stakes will certainly be each other’s lives," Victor said slowly, gesturing towards Felic and himself, then pointing at the six members of the adventure team and Muir: "You have two choices. First, all of you except the two who will fight leave immediately, so the bet will be the life and death of us four. If we win, the remaining five of you won’t be affected, and if we lose, all of you can naturally survive. The second choice is for all of you to stay. If we lose, the outcome is no different, but if we win, naturally, there will be a second battle. Of course, without the aid of a Demigod, a Legendary attempting to fight a Demigod isn’t something I need to explain the outcome of."

"Go on," Pannis waved, indicating Victor should continue: "There’s a first, so naturally, there must be a second. And as a first stake, the two options obviously have nothing to do with being fair."

"Of course, the most important thing in betting is the fairness of the stakes," Victor nodded slowly: "If you choose the first option and everyone else leaves, and in the end, we win, naturally, you would inform other forces to intervene. As for us, to avoid intervention, we would have to execute our plan as quickly as possible, even if the plan isn’t fully ready. On the other hand, if you choose the second option and everyone stays, whatever happens after our victory will probably have nothing to do with you."

"What if you fail?" Pannis said: "What’s in it for us, the victors?"

"Have you forgotten what I said a few minutes ago, Mr. Kyle?" Victor’s eyes, devoid of emotion, stared at Pannis’s face as he said slowly: "If we lose, we’ll leave behind the design blueprints of Fiery City’s Array sequence for you, and we will identify the other cities where Arrays have been set up. With the blueprints, you can completely resolve all hidden threats and prevent any civilians from dying. Of course, afterward, whether or not those who secretly worship me in the shadows will restart the plan is uncertain, but at least this incident would be perfectly resolved. That’s the benefit for you."

"That doesn’t sound all that fair," Pannis said with a smirk: "Moreover, do you really think we would come looking for you in your controlled city without any preparation?"

"Relatively speaking, it’s already quite fair, isn’t it? Where in the world is there absolute fairness," Victor said: "And yes, I indeed think so. This is the teacher’s territory, without the teacher’s agreement, no matter how much support you find, it is impossible for you to enter. It’s clear from your earlier words that the teacher would never agree. Besides, never underestimate a Mage’s control over their own territory. Whether any foreign powers are approaching, as the territory’s controllers, we’re clearer than anyone. So your words can’t intimidate me. Of course, I am not discounting you might have made other preparations, but what does that matter? If you have the courage, you could try other methods, but I can’t guarantee what the results will be. Perhaps without the blueprints, you might be able to resolve all issues, such as by completely destroying this temple, which might disrupt our plans. So, how about it? Want to give it a try?"

Pannis didn’t speak further. He stepped back a few paces, falling behind Catherine. The adventure team’s six members exchanged looks, seemingly coming to a decision. Eventually, all eyes converged on Catherine. Indeed, as the leader of the adventure team, the knight girl must make the ultimate decision for the team. No one else had the authority to decide on her behalf.

Catherine inhaled deeply and raised her voice: "We accept the bet, and on our side, Pannis and I will be the representatives for the duel."

"Big sister, let me do it," Vivian shook her head, whispering into Catherine’s ear: "Leave the matters of a Demigod to a Demigod, and naturally, those of a Mage to a Mage. I know you made this decision because of your high defense, but against the onslaught of a Demigod, even the highest defense is meaningless. Using other methods might allow us to survive. I have much more experience fighting Mages than you do; trust me. We’re all grown up now, we definitely won’t disappoint you."

Catherine bit her lip and thought for a moment before nodding reluctantly. The knight girl understood very well Vivian was right. Her previous decision was simply out of unwillingness to put the girls in danger by fighting herself. But as Vivian said, they had grown up. They were fully capable of facing any danger together. Thus, trusting her teammates, her sisters, was what she should do now.

"Since the decision is made, there’s no need to waste time," Victor straightened his stooped back, his aura soaring crazily, an invisible pressure pouring out from his body: "Let the bet begin."
