Chapter 846: Chapter 110: The Plan

When they saw the door several people high, everyone already had a premonition that behind it would be a huge space, but no one expected that the space would turn out to be a massive temple. Dozens of towering pillars stood on either side of the temple, each topped with a swirling flame formed from glowing light, illuminating the entire temple, so that everything could be seen clearly. The temple was empty, with hardly any people present, except at the far end on top of a tall stone platform, where a young yet old mage in a black robe quietly waited for their arrival.

The black-robed mage had pale skin and a slender figure. He wasn’t wearing the hood of his robe and his long hair lay scattered over his shoulders. He was young with not even a beard on his face. But no one would mistake him for truly being young; just from the posture of his limbs, one could feel that this was already a dying old man.

In the center of the stone platform, there stood a sandglass-shaped divine throne, and this young old man was sitting upright upon it. His right elbow rested on the arm of the throne, his right fist propped against his chin, his head bowed as though pondering, not even looking up when the door opened. Though still, the young old man radiated an air of authority, his seated figure high on the divine throne as if accepting the worship from all those below.

"My lord brother," without paying attention to the seven people he had brought, Felic briskly walked to the base of the platform, bowed deeply with a respectful tone laced with a hint of fervor, "In accordance with your oracle, I have brought them before your divine throne."

"Very well." The voice of the person on the divine throne was slow and resonant, the extended syllables echoing in the vast temple, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my temple, welcome to my world. I apologize that I have not yet truly ignited the divine fire to become a deity, so I am unable to welcome you in the divine kingdom. I hope you do not mind. I am very clear about your intentions, and I know you must have many questions you wish to understand. It is alright. Before we truly address the disputes between us, we are still in a state of peace. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, and I will do my best to answer them."

Catherine opened her mouth but found she didn’t know what to ask. For the past two years, her group had been ardently tracking down this evil organization, to eradicate it in the name of justice, especially its leader, to prevent them from taking lives for their own gain. But now, at the final step, the knightess was overwhelmed with so many questions that she didn’t know where to start. She could only clench her teeth and grip her knight sword tightly, to settle the turmoil in her heart.

Thankfully, there was Pannis. He had seen this too many times. When he was with Nellie, a righteous knight like Catherine, with a heart full of justice, they had similar weaknesses in many areas. Like in this situation, so naturally Pannis stepped forward, shielding Catherine, and looked directly at the mage on the divine throne to ask, "Are you Victor? Philarx’s most accomplished student, who, theoretically, died as a demigod mage five years ago?"

"It seems you have guessed it, and rightly so. Since you were able to find Felic, naturally, you could guess my identity as well." Victor maintained the same position, only lifting his eyelids to sweep a detached glance over Pannis’s face, speaking slowly, "Indeed, I am the one you refer to, the former demigod mage Victor."

"Former?" Pannis raised an eyebrow and pressed, "If you were Victor before, what about now?"

"Now I am still Victor." Victor answered calmly, supporting his chin, "However, I have transcended the mortal realm and am about to become the first to acquire the divine duty of time—the nascent deity Victor."

"But it hasn’t succeeded yet, has it?" Pannis sneered, "I’m afraid your so-called identity change, and your plans, are closely related, or should I say, you hope to rely on your own plan to achieve your stated goal?"

"You know of our plan?" Victor seemed to finally take an interest, straightened up his back to look directly at Pannis, his young eyes revealing an aged murkiness, "It appears you all know quite a bit then."

"Unfortunately, I don’t know." Pannis shrugged, "But your actions have already said everything. It’s clear from the tragedy you created on the borders of the Neutral Land, just to lure us away from Butte, that you definitely have some secret plan about to be put into action. You feared that us staying here would lead to its discovery, hence you dared to risk our discovery to lure us away, am I wrong? And from what you just said, it’s easy to guess that you feel you are about to gain Divine Duty by relying on this plan. However, I suspect that even you are not certain it will fulfill your goal, which is why you have been delaying until now, right?"

"The exploration of the knowledge of time has no precedent to draw upon." Victor answered Pannis’s guesses with calm composure, "No one can guarantee the certainty of an experiment’s success, therefore, as long as there is a great chance of success, it’s worth the price to attempt it."

"Even if the price to pay is sacrificing countless lives for it?" Catherine interrupted with a cold laugh, "And it seems that you have plundered countless people’s time just to prolong your own life, which appears to have nothing to do with your experiment."

"No, you are mistaken about two things," Victor said, "First, I am the leader, only if I live does the experiment have the possibility to continue, so my longevity is directly related to the experiment. Second, in fact, plundering lifespans is a part of the experiment, an act that is closely related to, and even inseparable from the experiment. So, as long as the plan can proceed smoothly, it’s not unacceptable to pay with lives. To sacrifice for knowledge is an honor for those who died."

"That is if it’s based on the voluntary sacrifice of the victims." Catherine retorted loudly, "To go against people’s will, forcibly making them sacrifice for your goals, that’s nothing but slaughter."

"Clap clap," Pannis turned back and patted Catherine on the shoulder to calm her down, before speaking emotionlessly, "So, could you tell me what your plan is?"

"There’s no need to hide it now, since it has to come to an end eventually." Victor revealed openly, "Actually our plan is rather simple, this city is now a gigantic Array. As for what kind of Array, you should be able to guess, heh heh." (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, welcome to Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendation tickets, monthly tickets.
