Chapter 845: Chapter 109: Felic’s Psychological Counterattack

Past the grand dining hall, around the central courtyard of City Hall, and deeper still was the area where upper-rank officials worked. Naturally, these officials spent little time in their offices, resulting in the often-empty ambience that surrounded the place now. No one spoke on the way, in a silence so oppressive only the rattling of footsteps echoed in the vast, vacant building. At the end of an empty corridor, Felic pushed open the door, revealing a seemingly ordinary office. Apart from a desk and a few chairs, the only other furniture was a row of bookcases behind the desk. Everyone sharply noticed that all the furniture was free of dust, as if it were wiped daily. Logically speaking, given this office was at path’s end — regardless of secret routes or Teleportation Arrays — it seemed unlikely for servants to clean regularly. However, considering the strange skills of the mages, such simple dusting, even for a Silver Rank mage, was effortlessly achievable, let alone for a Legendary Mage like Felic.

Felic walked slowly to a bookcase, lightly brushed his hand along the wall beside it. It was unclear what kind of mana manipulation he performed, but the office floor began to open, revealing a dark passage as he moved. The passage was a staircase slanting downward, extending beyond where the light could reach. Its depth unknown, the dark passage seemed filled with danger, like a beast lurking in the shadows, its jaws wide open, ready to devour any prey that might stumble in.

"This is the entrance," Felic said with his usual courteous smile, "There are no complex forks inside, so there’s no need to worry. I will lead the way, please follow me, Firefly Glow."

As Felic chanted, a cold fluorescent light gathered above his head, casting a pallid hue over the surroundings, revealing a faint greenish tint, adding an eerie feel. Seeing everyone’s puzzled looks, Felic thoughtfully explained, "It’s very dark below; using normal light would be too harsh and glaring. This fluorescent light is much gentler — easier on the eyes even if we stay for a long time."

"Then we are indeed grateful," Despite officially being enemies now, both Felic and Catherine maintained proper decorum. Catherine bowed slightly and said, "Thank you for your consideration, Lord Felic."

"It’s nothing, just what I should do," Felic replied, adjusting the hood of his robe as per mage’s etiquette, then turned and walked down the staircase. Watching Felic’s figure swallowed by the darkness, Catherine’s pupils contracted slightly, but without any hesitation, she stepped forward and followed. Muir made some indecipherable clicking noises and said, "You should follow him; I don’t think you’d be at ease otherwise. I’ll guard the rear, so don’t worry about what’s behind you."

"Then I’m counting on you," Pannis said without any pleasantries, nodded to the other girls, and followed Catherine into the darkness.

Only upon actually entering the dark passage did they realize the stairs spiraled down squarely, turning at right angles every few meters. After just two turns, the infiltrating light from outside became invisible, leaving only Felic’s fluorescent light above. As they walked, Felic suddenly said, "If you’re not accustomed to it, you may turn on your illumination devices. While not ideal for the eyes, if it’s for a short time, it should be fine."

"There’s no need, Mr. Felic," Catherine shook her head in the darkness. In reality, all seven of them carried Crystal Energy lamps and Light-attribute crystals, which could be activated for illumination at any time, but in this situation, out of basic etiquette, none used them, advancing silently in the dark.

"This is a Teleportation Array," Felic said, reverting to the courteous official guide they had first encountered upon entering the city. "During each meeting, all members would teleport here from their residences using the highland transportation system. What you’re seeing now is our gathering place."

The space Felic referred to was a circular area of over twenty square meters. After winding down a square spiral staircase, they finally reached level ground, which was this circular space. A large Teleportation Array lay not far below the stairs, devoid of any magical glow, obviously abandoned.

"You all?" Vivian, who had just walked down, frowned and looked at the Teleportation Array. "This Array... the other end has been destroyed, hasn’t it? It’s a pity to destroy such a complex multi-point Teleportation Array."

"Ah, of course it had to be abandoned, don’t you agree?" Felic replied with a meaningful smile but offered no explanation for the word "we." He simply turned and pointed to the space opposite the array, saying, "The destination is just down that corridor. Please come with me, he is waiting for you inside."

The corridor Felic mentioned was a long passageway that seemed to stretch in a straight line for hundreds of meters. In the darkness, it was impossible to see the end, walking through it felt like traversing an ancient, large tomb. Pannis stomped on the stone floor beneath him and sighed, "Do Tower Mages all enjoy being so mysterious? With such a long corridor, why not install a few oil lamps? It would be convenient for your own use as well."

"It’s pointless," Felic shook his head. "Everyone who comes here is an Upper Rank Mage. Maintaining illumination for a short period is a simple task. In that case, why bother expending extra effort to install lighting fixtures on the walls? Once installed, we’d also need to spend energy maintaining them. Everyone is either a lord or a high-ranking official of some territory, who would have that much time to maintain these things, eh?"

In the darkness, Catherine clenched her teeth. She was well aware of the purpose behind Felic’s words, but despite her understanding, she had to admit that his psychological tactics had some effect. Outwardly, it seemed like he was voluntarily exposing his secrets, yet in reality, he revealed nothing substantial. This, to some extent, made her worry about fully resolving the issue.

"We’ve arrived," Felic, unconcerned with Catherine’s mindset, stretched out his hands and pushed open the massive doors at the end of the corridor. As the doors opened, a burst of light greeted everyone’s eyes. (To be continued. If you enjoy this, feel free to vote or subscribe at qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation.
