Chapter 842: Chapter 106 Before the Storm

"It’s going to rain," is the sigh every citizen of Third Flame City utters when they lift their gaze to the sky.

The weather on Butte Plateau is somewhat similar to that of Whispering Swamp, yet there is a significant difference. Whispering Swamp experiences a typical rainy season during summer, spending nearly every day enveloped in rain. The continuous downpour can transform the swamp into lakes and merge the lakes into a vast ocean. Butte Plateau, however, is drier, with far less frequent rainfall compared to Whispering Swamp. But when it rains, it pours torrentially from the sky, cleansing this world tormented by scorching heat and high temperatures.

Therefore, every commoner on Butte Plateau longs for the rain. Whenever it rains, it’s like a festival to everyone, basking in the coolness brought by the downpour. Children often sneak out of their homes and play in the rain with abandon, and even though the heavy rain blurs their vision, it cannot quench the joy and Passion in their hearts. They continue to play until worried parents drag them back home, to scold them and bathe them in hot water.

However, today, as the residents looked up at the gloomy sky, they did not feel the usual joy that comes before the rain but were instead immersed in pain and suffering. Today’s sky was especially overcast, as grey rain clouds obscured the azure sky and the dazzling sunlight. It was not yet noon, but it already looked as dusk were approaching. Even without the scorching direct sunlight, the low grey clouds hung above the city, making the air heavy and oppressive, giving a sense of suffocation. The oppressive air was filled with the humidity before the rain, and in the stifling environment, fine sweat would seep out even from standing still. The sweat would soak people’s thin clothes, which clung tightly to their bodies, making them indescribably uncomfortable.

This type of weather and such discomfort are not uncommon during the rainy season and can occasionally be encountered. Yet this time was different; the people, from within the oppressive and silent atmosphere, instinctively felt uneasy as if something terrible was about to happen, as if danger was looming over everyone.

"It’s going to rain." High above the ground, on the Floating Island, a few Mages who occasionally stepped out of their laboratories looked at the sky outside the island with grim faces, uttering the same sigh.

Looking from the edge of the Floating Island, grey clouds surrounded them, enveloping everything in shadow, whether above their heads or below their feet. And unlike on the ground, up high, one could hear the faint rumbling of thunder echoing within the clouds and barely visible lightning flitting through them, emitting a burnt scent. The Mages, residing in the high atmosphere, had a sharper perception than the ordinary people on the ground. They too felt uneasy, but it wasn’t a fear of impending danger—rather, their hearts were heavy as if weighed down by something substantial, always sensing inauspicious omens around them.

"It’s going to rain." Busy Felic found a rare moment of rest and leisurely walked out of the City Hall’s main entrance, standing on the steps outside the hall, hands clasped behind his back, he looked up to the sullen sky. The churning clouds in the sky grew thicker and darker, blocking his view, to the extent that he couldn’t even locate the familiar Floating Island that always hovered above. Felic shook his head, sighed softly, and muttered to himself, "This must be the first torrential rain of the year, the rainy season has finally arrived. Heh, I always used to hate this oppressive period before the rain, but today is strange, I don’t know why, suddenly I find that I kind of like this weather. After all, during this time, everyone is filled with anticipation for the imminent rain. This yearning for the future, no matter how many times I see it, always fills me with envy."

"Governor." Another young Grey-robed Mage stepped out from City Hall, his youthful face filled with confusion as he asked, "Have you encountered some trouble? Why are you making such a remark?"

"Ah, it’s just the influence of the weather making me feel a bit down," the Red-robed Felic shook his head and said softly, "Sometimes when I’m feeling down, I wonder if living a life as ordinary as these people’s could also be a kind of joy that’s hard to understand. Indeed, ordinary people live out their mundane lives, unable to grasp the glory of professionals like you and me, but, on the other hand, can we professionals truly understand the purest joy they get from a simple life? Living like them might seem pitiful, their lives muddled and confused, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. At least they don’t have so many unnecessary worries and fears."

"Ha, the Governor must have forgotten, I’m someone who came from such an ordinary family," the Grey-robed Mage said with a laugh, "You only see the good side of their lives but overlook the most important point, that even with a bland and monotonous life, it is still filled with worries and anxieties. In this respect, ordinary people and professionals are the same. Thus, I would rather choose to have more worries than to go back to a life of ignorance. After all, having seen a more brilliant world and experienced the joy of the known, to return to ignorance would be the most painful torment."

"Ah, you don’t understand," Felic didn’t continue the argument, just smiled rare smile and said, "But that’s good, after all, you are the hope of this city. Keep working hard to revitalize the city that your teacher spent a century building."

"Revitalize?" the young Grey-robed Mage scratched his head in confusion and asked, "Why revitalize? Under your and the several predecessors’ management, our city is already perfect."

"Just a slip of the tongue," Felic shook his head and said, "Don’t mind it. Weren’t you going home to have dinner with your parents? Remember to come back early. Well, never mind that, you should spend more time with them. Consider it half a day off, it doesn’t make any difference anyway. Go on now."

"Thank you, Governor," the bewildered Grey-robed Mage completely failed to understand what Felic was lamenting, but he was certainly happy about getting an extra half day off. Therefore, the young man nodded and took a few steps away before suddenly remembering something. He turned back and said, "You should also head back to Floating Island early, sir, since it’s about to rain."

"Yes, I know," Felic didn’t move, still standing on the steps with his back turned, "But I still have to wait for some friends, some friends who have come from afar."(To be continued.
