Chapter 834: Chapter 99: Disguised Identity

"Samoer is quite talkative," answered Nicholas thoughtfully, unsure if he had misspoken. This was his second time feeling an immense pressure emanating from Pannis, pressure so intense that he once again experienced the fear of death. As a prince of the Falar Empire, the future Emperor, Nicholas had encountered increasingly formidable figures, strengthening his resolve. Therefore, with his power as a Silver Rank professional, he could barely withstand the full pressure of a Legendary Rank professional. But now, facing Mr. Pannis, it was as if he was confronting a primordial giant beast, his heart filled only with fear. The only thought in his mind was, "Gold Rank? Is this what you meant by Gold Rank? Damn it, cursed Gold Rank. If this is merely the power of a Gold Rank, what am I? What are you? Are we just infants?"

While Nicholas was internally panic-stricken and his voice hesitant, his expression remained composed. Sweat beaded on his forehead, yet his face stayed calm, and his eyes were fixed on Pannis, struggling to uphold the dignity of royalty.

"Pannis." Catherine’s softly spoken call brought Pannis back to his senses. Nicholas immediately felt the almost unbearable oppressive force dissipate rapidly, and the Pannis before him returned to his harmless self as if everything before was just an illusion. He heard Catherine apologize, "Sorry, Pannis was just a bit agitated, and it was not directed at you, Your Highness."

"I understand, I understand, Catherine, you don’t need to explain," said Nicholas, aware that it was not meant for him. If it had been, he likely wouldn’t have had the chance to try to preserve his dignity, and would have lost consciousness under the pressure. Thus, Nicholas merely coughed a few times, clenched his thighs beneath the table to keep calm, and maintained his noble demeanor, asking calmly, "I can sense Mr. Pannis did not do it on purpose, but I do not quite understand why Mr. Pannis would suddenly become so agitated. Did I say something wrong?"

"No, no, you didn’t say anything wrong." Catherine, squinting in a manner that was becoming increasingly similar to Pannis, said with a smirk that matched Pannis’s expression, "But the problem is, you really didn’t say anything wrong."

"Is there a problem with Samoer?" Nicholas, clearly no fool having been chosen by the Emperor as heir from a young age, deduced the cause from Pannis and Catherine’s reactions within seconds and ventured, "It can only be this reason, right? He acts very introverted in your presence?"

"Yes, quite introverted," Catherine and Pannis exchanged glances and chuckled, saying, "If someone has always been an extroverted, talkative person skilled in social interaction, but suddenly turns shy, there are only two reasons. First, he’s disguising himself, but I don’t think, with our experience, no, rather with Pannis’s experience, that would go unnoticed. So, it has to be the second reason, right, Mr. Muir?"

"Yes." Muir, who had been busily bent over the table since the issue arose, suddenly lifted his head and handed a paper to Nicholas, asking strangely, "Your Highness, please examine carefully, is this the person you referred to as Samoer? I apologize for the rush in drawing, but it should still be recognizable."

Upon receiving it, Nicholas immediately felt that Muir was just being modest; the portrait on the paper looked so lifelike it was dubious it was not an image left by a Memory Crystal. Nonetheless, Nicholas, unconcerned with praising Muir’s artistic skills, promptly shook his head, saying, "No, this is not Samoer. Is this the person you encountered?"

"That’s correct." Muir nodded, handing over another freshly completed portrait, "Since it’s not Samoer, then perhaps this isn’t Jonas either."

"Indeed, it is not," Nicholas replied. "Though the figure is similar and the attire matches, the faces are distinctly different. I cannot be mistaken, these two are definitely not Samoer and Jonas."

"I see," Catherine nodded thoughtfully, her expression eerie, "It seems the situation has become more complicated."

"But I don’t understand at all," Nicholas lamented, lacking the context of the events, despite his quick response and sharp wit. Unable to keep up with everyone’s thought process, he could only wryly ask, "What exactly has happened that has made all you masters suddenly act so strangely? Can you explain it to me?"

"Actually, I think you might have guessed a part of it already," Catherine said. "We met two people claiming to be Samoer and Jonas, and after talking for a while, we now realize, these two are actually not Samoer and Jonas at all, but two unknown individuals deliberately impersonating them."

"Hmm, I’ve already figured that part out," Nicholas said, rolling his eyes internally but maintaining a standard smile, "Their actions seems pointless, don’t they?"

"No, of course not," Catherine disagreed, shaking her head, "Eliminate all impossible options, and only one answer remains: their purpose in doing this was to notify us of a massacre that has occurred."

"Isn’t that too cumbersome?" Nicholas countered. "If they wanted to pass the message to you, they could have done so through the Mage Guild in a few days, right? Why specifically send someone to inform you? And moreover, there’s no need to disguise themselves as someone else to do it."

"No, it’s completely different," Catherine explained. "If it were through the Mage Guild, it would delay our receipt of the message by at least two to three days, by which time five days would have passed since the massacre. Even if we get the message and immediately ask you to secure the scene, it wouldn’t be very meaningful anymore. In such a case, we could have dealt with our own affairs first before coming here. Thus, notifying us in advance was indeed necessary. As for the issue of disguising their identities, probably only these two identities would have sufficient reason to know this news in advance."
