Chapter 827: Chapter 92: Down, Down
As it turned out, Catherine and Pannis’s concerns were unnecessary. Their greatest worry had been for the three caster profession ladies, whose constitution was much weaker compared to Catherine’s due to their professions. Catherine feared that they might not be able to control their bodies naturally during a steep descent, but her excessive care for the ladies made her overlook the fact that they actually had sufficient means to protect themselves on the slope, so there was no need for her concern.
Having regained her health, Vivian, after consuming a Feather Potion, felt as light as a cloud. With a light jump forward down the slope, her body floated down like a feather blown by the wind. When she landed dozens of meters away, she only needed to slightly stabilize herself on the chain to jump again and continue her drifting descent. It looked effortless and she was nearly as fast as Pannis; a few more jumps and she had disappeared into the twilight.
Compared to Vivian, Freya had it even easier and more effortless. It seemed that while disassembling four magic-powered motorbikes earlier, she had kept some parts for herself and had surprisingly fitted two tracks onto her back. These tracks, inspired by goblin technology, were originally designed for some non-humanoid metal puppets to facilitate their movement in complex terrains. Therefore, when she lay sideways on the slope, the tracks snugly fitted the ground. The cleverly designed tracks clung firmly to the terrain, rolling along and allowing the rounded Freya to leisurely reach the bottom. Perhaps worried that the tracks weren’t secure enough, Freya had also mounted eight limb-like stabilizers around her body. Even without the tracks, these spider-inspired limbs alone could let her crawl in any direction on the slope, although it would indeed be more energy-consuming than mechanically descending on tracks. Nonetheless, from a distance, Freya lying on the slope resembled a giant spider clinging to the mountainside, menacingly waving its eight legs — and, if one considered the size, somewhat similar in appearance.
"I really am a fool," Catherine said, patting her head and smiling wryly. "To think I was so worried about their safety earlier, and yet it seems they’re just playing. Mages really are a peculiar bunch."
"Exactly, you are a fool, big sis," Lina said, elbowing Catherine with a radiant smile. "Sometimes you should trust us more because we’ve grown up now, capable of standing by your side and sharing the burden."
"Tch, look who’s talking," Catherine felt a warm surge inside and teased to hide her inner warmth and emotion, scrunching her nose. "They might find it easy to go down, but what about you? You crazy thing, you don’t have those mages’ peculiar methods."
"Me? Hehe," Lina flicked her silver hair back, and with a mysterious and proud sparkle in her eyes, she said boastfully, "I am Denia’s Sage, after all. The earth might sometimes be your enemy, but it is always my friend. How could I be trapped by my own friend? Come on, Ava, let’s go down together."
Ava, with a blank expression, tilted her head and gazed at Lina’s offered hand with an almost tangible confusion around her, making the doll-like girl look exceptionally adorable. While not understanding Lina’s intention, Ava followed her usual habit of not asking anything and just reached out to firmly grasp Lina’s extended hand.
"Big sis, we’re heading off first," Lina said, pulling Ava to the edge of the steep slope, waving cheerfully at Catherine, "We’re going for a walk and will take it slower. It’s best if you wait for Pannis to signal before you start, or you might bump into us."
"Wait a second," Catherine exclaimed in surprise, "I didn’t get to say it when Freya was going down, but when you go down, you should also wait until Pannis confirms the person before has landed. It’s so dangerous otherwise."
"Don’t worry, we’ll do just that, because our methods are controllable," Lina explained, "But we need to hurry. If the three of us delay waiting for the one before us to reach the bottom, by the time it’s your and Muir’s turn, it will be completely dark. And I don’t want you to rush down a thousand-meter cliff in the dark. Alright then, see you down there."
Speaking of which, the two girls held hands and walked down the cliff side by side, yes, walked right down. Ava, being a Triclops, or rather an artificial Triclops, inherently had the abilities of her kind. Although she couldn’t fly freely like the supremely powerful, simple levitation was still within her capabilities. However, every member of the adventure team had cautioned her never to reveal her Triclops identity, so in order not to let Muir find out, Ava still levitated but maintained the minimum possible distance from the ground, appearing as if she were stepping down stair by stair towards the base of the mountain in such a way that Muir, though still finding it strange, would only think of it as some special skill of hers and not associate it with flying.
If Ava appeared to be stepping down an invisible staircase, Lina was actually doing so. The priestess girl held Ava with one hand and a metal chain with the other, like one might hold a staircase’s railing while descending in a mansion. As for her footsteps, each time she took a step, a stone the size of a footstep rose from the sloped ground precisely where she intended to step next, extremely flat on top, making it just as if she were stepping on an even stone stair. Each step necessitated the rise of these stairs, and once she lifted her foot, the stair would sink back into the ground without any delay, making it seem to the outsider as though the entire Pandora Mountains possessed wisdom, acting in this way to accommodate the arrival of the benevolent deity’s sage. Of course, those who knew Lina were aware that this was merely the result of clever adjustments to Divine Spell terrain manipulation.
Thus, from the top of the mountain, the two girls hand in hand slowly made their way down the Light of Wisdom slope, leisurely as if a sister was guiding her younger sibling in a stroll through the garden on an afternoon.
"Hehe, your companions are really interesting, each one is quite confident and possesses their own unique abilities," Muir said quietly, watching the fading figures of the two girls and plucking the strings of the Flaron Harp with a light chuckle, "No wonder he accepted you as his teammates. Probably only such strong, independent women could stand beside him. However, that’s still not enough, oh no. To become Her Majesty the Queen’s enemy, you still have a long way to go, human girl."
"I have never regarded Queen Fula as an enemy." Catherine squinted her eyes just like Pannis, revealing a standard noble smile, "Queen Fula will not become our enemy either, just as she couldn’t become Lady Nellie’s enemy. Perhaps the future belongs to her, but the most precious present belongs to us, don’t you think, Mr. Muir?"
"Very confident, but I wonder if that is truly how you feel inside." Despite the barely noticeable aggressiveness in Catherine’s words, Muir did not become angry, but simply smiled faintly, "I would indeed like to see if you can seize the present you speak of, heh. To elves with lifelong spans, what you consider the present holds no significance at all, merely a blink. The victor is determined by who has the last laugh."
"Heh, who do you think that will be? I am quite confident, you know." Catherine’s smile was full of Elegance, covering her red lips as she spoke, "Oh, it seems Pannis has already sent a safe signal. Well, I must take my leave now, ohoho."
"Safe travels." Muir watched as the fully armed Catherine dashed down the slope, saying leisurely, "Ah, what interesting girls."
Taking the first step, the knight girl started running down the slope swiftly, charging with speed, relishing the thrill that every knight becomes infatuated with. Catherine leaned her body slightly backward, adjusting her angle with the ground to control her speed and attempted to maintain it consistently. Her muscular legs stamped the ground powerfully with each stride, even crushing the protruding rocks beneath her feet. The mountain wind worked hard at blowing, lifting her black long hair, which fluttered like a knight’s banner in the air, symbolizing the knight’s strength and spirit. Only when the speed became too overwhelming did she grab the nearby chain to slow down, but even then, she only briefly used it for assistance before letting go, not affecting her sprinting speed or balance. This was the first time the girl reached such speed relying solely on her legs without professional skills, and it was also the first time she realized the alluring charm of velocity.
The sky grew darker, but the knight girl, with the help of twilight’s dim light, could still accurately choose each of her footfalls, continuing her stable run on the mountain path until she saw the strong glow from the Crystal Energy lights, until she saw several girls’ smiling faces appear in her view.
