Chapter 823: Chapter 88: The Teleportation Network of the Kingdom of Mages

"I wanted to ask the same thing," Catherine said, puzzled. "Vivian, do you know what the internal teleportation network of the Kingdom of Mages is? I overheard those two mage lords talking about it earlier. It seems like a very interesting piece of magitech."

"That is a special teleportation magic technology of the Kingdom of Mages," Vivian recalled. "I remember hearing other researchers discussing it. It’s said to consist of more than fifty Floating Islands as nodes forming a unique structure that slightly reduces the energy consumed for each additional kilometer of transport. Then it uses the several hundred small and large Leyline Energy nodes of the Butte Plateau as intermediary energy supports, ultimately establishing a teleportation system. This system allows one to teleport between any of the Floating Islands. If it’s used in conjunction with the ordinary Teleportation Array network from a lord’s capital to other subsidiary cities, these mages can reach any corner of the Kingdom of Mages within an hour. It’s both convenient and fast. However, it can only operate within the unique environment of the Butte Plateau, and additionally, each teleportation consumes a substantial amount of energy. Plus, it can only transport one person at a time, so it’s only used for internal affairs. When using it, the lord of the territory from which one is teleporting has to issue a certificate. Public officers with the certification must record their transfer within the territories of other lords. At the end of each year, the territories settle the energy costs with the territory that issued the certification. As for outsiders, although there are no strict rules against their use, according to the customary agreement among lords, they generally aren’t allowed to use the internal teleportation channels. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule."

"You’re slightly mistaken about one thing. It’s not that outsiders are prevented from using it, but there’s a major problem with the system. The user must possess mana channels within their body, meaning the user must be capable of using magical energy and able to control the magical energy within their body to cooperate with the Teleportation Array. Otherwise, the Teleportation Array won’t function," Pannis corrected, shaking his head. "Therefore, even if they are internal public officers, only those who have the profession of a mage, even as a secondary job, can be teleported. As for outsiders, since it requires their bodies’ magical energies to cooperate with the Magic Array, and outsiders are not as familiar with the operations of the Magic Array as mages who grew up in the Kingdom of Mages, they need some time to train and adapt to this rhythmic operation. Instead of spending so much time training, it’s better to rely on ordinary means of transportation to pass through normally."

"Uh, I really had no idea about this," Vivian said cluelessly. "I suppose those mages discussing the matter didn’t know either. So there are such restrictions. No wonder the Kingdom of Mages itself doesn’t use it that much."

"However, this gives us a good opportunity," Muir said, polishing the Flaron Harp. "As long as we go to the territory where the trail went cold and identify who used the teleportation system and which lord’s certificate they carried, perhaps we could find the mastermind behind the Sands of Time."

"You’re considering doing so, but first, you need to confirm that the person is indeed Sandy, but you’ve already lost track of them and can’t confirm it now," Pannis countered. "Furthermore, even if you could confirm it’s Sandy, what proof do you have that he definitely used the teleportation system? Even if he did use the system, how do you plan to persuade the local lord to let you examine the teleportation records? A few months ago, I checked out the incident when Sandy was wanted by the major Guilds. He was wanted for conducting live experiments on sentient beings over a prolonged period. However, the Kingdom of Mages was not one of the parties that recognized the warrant. Therefore, they have no obligation to cooperate with you in the investigation, and even if the Mage Guild and the Adventurer Guild applied pressure, if the local lord has even the slightest involvement with the Sands of Time and refuses your request, you’d have no recourse. However, we could start from Philarx’s side. As an important member of the Supreme Council of Mages, if he suggests cooperation on behalf of the Council, they would have no reason to obstruct. But the prerequisite to this is that we possess conclusive evidence proving the person you’re tracking is indeed Sandy. So, our primary task now is to verify the truth of the news tomorrow. If it’s true, we should get to the scene as quickly as possible before too many people tamper with it, so we can find as many clues as possible. Whether or not the perpetrator is Sandy, we won’t be too passive."

"From here to the border of Falar and Neutral Land, even at the fastest speed, I’m afraid it would take not less than ten days to arrive," Catherine calculated pensively. "The straight-line distance wouldn’t actually take that long, but due to the terrain, unless we intend to jump off the steep slopes of the thousands of meters high Malmira Mountain Range and then cross the Sea of Death Sands in the Country of Sand Bartom, which stretches as far as the eye can see, we must go through half of Butte, then traverse the entire territory of the Falar Empire to reach our destination. Calculating this way, ten days might not even be sufficient. By the time we get there after ten days, I’m afraid there won’t be any clues left. Hmm, this is quite troublesome."

"Therefore, we need to prepare on two fronts," Pannis said. "First, contact the Mage Guild and the Adventurer Guild as well as the Mercenary Guild, and even include the Shadow Hand. Aske still owes me a favor, and he’s also interested in investigating this matter. With the four Guilds representing Neutral Land to negotiate with the Falar Empire, ensuring cooperation to control and isolate the location of the massacre and prevent any unauthorized persons from entering will minimize the possibility of the scene being disturbed. As for the other front, Muir, I want to ask you, can you muster a few Horned Eagle Beasts from the forest?"

"Horned Eagle Beasts? You want to use Horned Eagle Beasts to fly directly down from the steep slopes of the Malmira Mountain Range?" Muir shook his head vigorously and said without a second thought, "No need to even consider it, as you are well aware of the characteristics of the Horned Eagle Beasts. They have certain insect-like traits and possess spiracles on their bodies. They must consume a great deal of air to maintain sufficient strength for activity. Away from the forest environment, it’s doubtful whether they could fly up to a hundred meters. To expect them to fly across the heights of the Butte Plateau that soar thousands of meters high? That is absolutely impossible; the high-altitude environment would literally suffocate them to death."

"They don’t need to fly long distances," Pannis explained. "They only need to fly straight down from the edge of the steep slopes of the Malmira Mountain Range. If they don’t have to climb altitudes, they should be able to withstand it, right?"

"You still haven’t grasped my point," Muir sighed. "Think about it—if you want to glide down the steep slope using them, the first thing you need to do is make them appear above the slope, right?"

"Uh, I get it now." Pannis smacked his forehead with a wry smile. "I forgot the most crucial point. Unless we go by land, they simply can’t get up here. And waiting to take the land route would take longer than if we just detoured. It seems this idea won’t work after all."

"Even if they could get up here, I still wouldn’t dare let you ride," Muir said. "The risk is just too high, and with a sheer drop of several kilometers, if the Horned Eagle Beasts couldn’t hold up and fell, aside from you being able to escape with your domain, everyone else would be doomed. Such a way to die would really be meaningless, and if it led to any of the ladies getting hurt or worse, I guess you would choke me to death. Uh, that way of dying would also be meaningless, so let’s drop it."

"Let me think; there really doesn’t seem to be any good way to get down." Pannis tapped the tabletop lightly with his fingers, pondering seriously. "Actually, using a Floating Island would work, but Floating Islands don’t move very fast, and besides, mobilizing one just for this probably isn’t possible."

"Well, we could go north from here, cross the Perpetual Icefield and then head west. If we just skirt the edge of the Forest of Death, we could get around the Malmira Mountain Range," Muir shrugged helplessly. "But that detour would probably take even more time, and the Forest of Death is not a place I want to enter."

"Isn’t that obvious?" Pannis glared at Muir irritably. "Actually, I just remembered a place we could get down, but it’s been many years since anyone used it. I don’t know if it’s still possible, and the risk isn’t low either."

"Are you talking about the source of the Malmis River?" Muir hesitated for a moment and then understood Pannis’s idea, speaking hesitantly. "True, the channel of the Malmis River is indeed the place with the gentlest slope in the entire Malmira Mountain Range. But even so, the force of the current could easily sweep away an ordinary person, not to mention there are many high waterfalls along the way. If the boat capsizes, I can hardly bear to imagine the outcome. I know you’ve taken the water route before, but can you please not lump Demigods and Legends together? Why have you suddenly become so strange today, proposing methods that are impractical and dangerous?"

"Enough, enough, Pannis, stop messing around," Catherine quickly understood why Pannis was acting this way today. "You’re just saying this for me to hear, right? I get it, there are no other ways. We will go buy four magic-powered motorbikes tomorrow, alright? But I warn you, once we are home, you have to sell all four motorbikes; don’t think I’ll agree to let you keep one."

"Then there’s no problem," Pannis winked at Muir, flashing a smile of someone who had succeeded in a scheme. In fact, there were already two magic-powered motorbikes at the mansion, belonging to Vivian and Freya, but now the adventure team had six members, and squeezing six people onto two motorbikes was just too cramped and would also damage the bikes. Therefore, the motorbikes could only sit at home as showpieces, never getting the chance to be used. Because of this, everyone had been urging Catherine several times to buy another motorbike, so they wouldn’t need to hire carriages anymore for travel. But obviously, all suggestions had been refused. The girls had not expected that Pannis would take advantage of this opportunity to make Catherine relent; once they really bought four, it would be much easier to keep one in the future.

"You bastard, using me like that," Muir said through gritted teeth. "I almost forgot, you’ve turned into a scoundrel now. I actually had a serious discussion with you. Just wait for the wrath of a chanter." (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, you are welcome to vote for it at Qidian (qidian.com), your support is my greatest motivation.
