Chapter 794: Chapter 59: Ways to Modify Organisms

"So you mean, hiss, the time I discovered you just now, you were fighting with the Marsh Stalker?" Alcmene sat in a chair specially modified for Lizardmen, habitually stroking the tip of her tail as she pondered and said, "Moreover, it was a Marsh Stalker artificially catalyzed into a Demigod, an interesting matter indeed, hiss."

"I don’t find it that amusing," Pannis said. "Even though the ones they catalyzed are merely pseudo-Demigods whose strength doesn’t truly reach the level of a Demigod, once these pseudo-Demigod magical beasts die and undergo Undead Transformation, their strength increases again. Then, they are not much different from some of the relatively weaker Demigod magical beasts."

"But what of it, hiss?" Alcmene held her teacup, gazing at the red root vines floating in the boiling water and said leisurely, "You must have noticed as well, hiss, from your narrative, it is apparent that the magical beasts altered on these two occasions involved two different directions of modification, hiss hiss. One is a physical enhancement, directly transferring the abilities of other magical beasts to the target, hiss, but alas, even with the transfer, it seems they cannot break through their original strength limitations, hiss. After all, just because a magical beast has some extra parts added on, doesn’t mean their physical qualities will suddenly leap in quality."

"There are exceptions," Pannis shook his head. "For those magical beasts whose strength is quite pronounced, they are qualified to own their current rank precisely because of a certain characteristic. Take, for instance, the Legendary Rank Split-Skull Spider’s attack power. If their attack potency is further enhanced, it might actually reach the minimum threshold of the Demigod Rank."

"No, no, no, hiss, little brother, you indeed lack deeper understanding in this area." Alcmene was a Herbalism Master, and an excellent doctor at that. Achieving such accomplishments would have been impossible without a profound understanding of physiology, and now, speaking as an expert, she shook her head in disagreement, "What you think seems reasonable, hiss, is actually impossible."

"What is the reason?" Pannis, though contradicted, clearly wouldn’t get upset over this and asked calmly, "Since you are so certain, you must have thought through most of the doubts, let’s hear it."

"The reason is simple, hiss, the object of transformation is a creature, not some item, hiss, and creatures are far more complex than you imagine." Alcmene explained, "Let’s take the example of the attack power you mentioned, hiss. Attack power definitely won’t come from nowhere, hiss. To enhance a magical beast’s attack power—and I mean from Legendary magical beasts to the level of Demigod magical beasts—there are only two ways. Hiss, hiss, hiss. The first is to strengthen their power, to bring their biting force to a transformative state, hiss. Sounds simple, right? But do you think the strength that is stronger than their original biting force comes from where? Hiss, we can use Aggression to strengthen our bodies, but magical beasts don’t use Aggression, they can only rely on the muscles within their bodies. Hiss, hiss, hiss, I won’t explain the overly complex content, just remember, little brother, unless you replace all the muscles involved in their attacks, it can’t be done."

"Sounds troublesome," Pannis said. "But if they indeed acquired some Goblin technological enhancements, they might be able to accomplish what you mentioned."

"It’s not over yet, hiss hiss," Alcmene flicked her tail and pointed at Pannis with the tip, "What do you think would happen if only the muscles involved in their attack were reinforced? Hiss hiss, they would be torn into pieces by their own strength in an instant because the muscles in other parts cannot withstand it. So, hiss hiss, if you want to reinforce, you must reinforce the muscles of the entire body, but just doing that is not enough; reinforced muscles would tear their shells and inner membranes, hiss hiss, so those need to be replaced, too. Then there’s the need to enhance their reaction and control abilities, hiss hiss, but if these two abilities are too high, flexibility and speed cannot be neglected either, hiss. That’s often the way it is with a biological body—it’s quite simple to enhance a certain aspect within a certain limit, but once you exceed that limit, hiss hiss, it almost invariably involves a variety of qualities throughout the entire body, which is more difficult than creating a body from scratch, hiss hiss. I’m afraid the goblins of yore couldn’t do it, and I don’t think those you call moribund are up to the task, hiss hiss. When it comes to medical-related matters, there’s nothing that can surpass the level of the goblins. Hiss hiss, as for another way to enhance their attack power, that would be to add magical attributes, and this is even more difficult, hiss hiss. To add magical attributes, there has to be a system for magical energy supply in the body, hiss hiss. To establish this system, I think only a Deity could do it."

"So you’re saying that the creatures remodeled by the Divine Servants before were just failures?" Pannis clenched his fist slowly and asked with a frown, "And these Marsh Stalkers are the alternative they’ve found?"

"Hiss hiss, I personally think so," Alcmene nodded, "And I also have a guess about the method they used, don’t worry, hiss hiss. This method couldn’t possibly mass-produce Demigod magical beasts, there’s absolutely no need to worry."

"Oh? You’ve guessed it?" Pannis stroked his chin and said, "It looks like you think it’s related to theological knowledge."

"You must have heard about the Blood of Divinity, hiss hiss," Alcmene said, "I remember I’ve told you about the Blood of Divinity, hiss hiss. A mortal being, unless they are born with divinity themselves, cannot withstand the shock of blood imbued with divinity, hiss hiss. Once a mortal absorbs the blood of a divine creature, they will burn their own vitality under the stimulation of divinity, hiss. During this period, the mortal can indeed increase their own strength, hiss hiss, but the more the strength increases, the faster vitality burns, and the sooner the time of death arrives, hiss hiss. Most won’t last more than a year, and magical beasts with a longer lifespan might make it to the second year. I think, those three Lurkers you encountered were just newly born younglings, hiss hiss. But stimulated by the Blood of Divinity, while burning vitality, their growth cycle was also greatly shortened, hiss hiss. That’s why they’ve grown so large in just a few months."

"But there’s still one problem." After hearing Alcmene’s speculation, Pannis had to admit it made sense but still tried to find holes in her guess, "Although the moribund are Deities, they no longer have any blood."

"You just said you had been in battle on the ice plains, hiss hiss," Alcmene said, "How do you forget now? Did you forget how Herr fought against you?" (To be continued.
