Chapter 791: Chapter 56 Alcmene

"Ah, hiss, you have already met," the female Lizardman embraced her daughter, waving her thick tail haphazardly behind her daughter’s back, before shooing her to the side. However, Galantis didn’t seem to mind, she hugged her mother’s large tail, following right behind her mother with a silly grin on her face, demonstrating through her actions a firm resolve never to part from her mother. The mother Lizardman simply swung her tail nonchalantly, allowing her daughter to play delightedly, hanging onto it as it swung through the air. Once she saw her daughter was having fun, she stopped paying attention and, with a look of surprise, exaggeratedly exclaimed, "Oh my, my, hiss, I was actually worried that you would have some misunderstanding when you met, and I wanted to come and help mediate for you, hiss hiss hiss, but to think you have already cleared up the misunderstanding, hiss hiss, that’s really wonderful, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief."

"I think..." Pannis glanced sideways at his headache-inducing friend, speaking despondently, "Someone who was hiding behind a tree just seven minutes ago, is the least qualified to say such a thing."

"Ahahaha, hiss hiss, how could that be possible," the Lizard Lady retorted swiftly, sticking out her tongue quickly without a hint of nervousness about being caught, and said with considerable calm, "I just arrived this moment, hiss hiss. Little brother, slandering your sister like this, there will be a price to pay, hiss hiss hiss hiss, let me think, what kind of price should you pay, hiss hiss, it’s really tough to decide."

"You tone it down a little, will you? Mind your image in front of your daughter," said Pannis, only to be met with an angry stare from Galantis and, left with no choice, he sighed helplessly, turning away from this mother-daughter duo that common folk couldn’t fathom. He introduced the lady to the girls, "As you have likely guessed, this is Galantis’ mother, the Demigod of the swamp, Artemis’ proxy in the swamp, the High Priest who is respected by all tribes of Lizardmen, one of my good friends, Alcmene."

Catherine’s eyebrows twitched, the knight-girl with rich conversational experiences easily picked up on the issue that Pannis might not have been aware of himself. When he mentioned some people from the past, he often said, "this is my friend," and most of the time, he said the word "friend" normally. Only for the few closest comrades-in-arms did he use a particular tone that was hard to detect. In Catherine’s memory, it seemed only when mentioning the Goblin Christo and the Winged sisters did he do so. The knight-girl did not expect that this Lizardman Demigod, who had not journeyed with him through Death’s Gate, would hold such an important place in his array of relationships.

"High Priest Your Excellency," facing the spiritual leader of a race, Catherine removed her helmet, held it in her left hand, and greeted the grey female Lizardman with the most solemn knightly courtesy, elegantly saying, "I am the leader of the Nellie adventure team, Catherine K. Field. I am honored to meet you, may the glory of Lady Artemis be with you."

"May the Goddess’s Spear of the Hunt eternally guide you toward victory." The former High Priest was momentarily taken aback by seeing someone use such standard etiquette to greet her, which she hadn’t experienced in a long time. Alcmene then responded with customary Lizardman greetings and returned the knight-girl’s goodwill, unaware that Catherine had specifically inquired from Lina about the proper etiquette when facing a deity’s priest, thus enabling her to perform so appropriately, "Thank you for your blessings, young knight, hiss hiss. But, I feel I must remind you, hiss hiss hiss, my dear, I am only the ’former’ High Priest. Addressing me as such shows a bit of disrespect for the current High Priest, you know."

"I meant no offense, and I am very sorry," Catherine regretfully struck her breastplate with her right hand, apologizing, "But even if you have relinquished your title of High Priest, your name still resonates throughout the tribes of the swamp."

"Young knight, hiss hiss, you must be of noble human birth," Alcmene observed Catherine’s face with amusement, her voice carrying a hint of laughter, "You really have the style of Nellie, hiss hiss, but Nellie’s etiquette is not as standard as yours. Your adventure team is named Nellie? Hiss hiss hiss hiss, that’s quite good, taking her as a role model, is it? That’s indeed a difficult path to follow."

"No matter how difficult," Catherine maintained a solemn expression, "We are willing to set Lady Nellie as our goal, to eternally follow in her footsteps, and never give up."

"That’s enough, don’t bully them, you always loved to push people around." Pannis placed a hand on Catherine’s shoulder and pulled her behind him as he spoke, "It’s been so many years since we’ve last seen each other, and the first thing that happens is Jack giving me a surprise. You really haven’t changed one bit, have you?"

"My scales have all turned white, hiss." Alcmene shook her head and said, "On the contrary, it’s you who looks exactly the same. But I’ve heard from those two annoyingly chatty little birds, hiss, that your personality has changed quite a bit."

"Humans, always so fickle." Pannis laughed self-deprecatingly and said, "Besides races like Elves and the Winged people who live long lives, who can claim they haven’t changed at all in a hundred years, especially after going through upheavals?"

"Indeed, who can claim that." Alcmene sighed, and after a moment of silence, she suddenly lunged forward and enveloped Pannis in a tight hug, not even caring that her daughter on her tail was flung to the side. She coiled her tail around both of them tightly and said with a choked voice, "Little brother, I’m sorry, so sorry, so sorry."

"Hey." Pannis was startled instead, feeling the strength of his old friend’s embrace. His hands awkwardly fluttered in the air before finally landing on Alcmene’s back, gently patting her shoulder as he softly said, "What’s this all about, after so many years, why the sudden apology?"

"I should have stuck to my convictions, hiss, I should have gone with you." Alcmene held Pannis tightly and whispered, "If I had gone, maybe things wouldn’t have turned out that way, hiss, and Nellie... she might not have gone like that. Poor Kyle, poor Nellie, it’s all my fault, I shouldn’t have stayed behind."

"What nonsense are you talking about, don’t take all the responsibility upon yourself." Pannis said with a wry smile, "That incident has nothing to do with you, you’ve done enough, and even if you had gone, the outcome would still have been the same."

"What if." Alcmene said, "One more person, one more helping hand, might have changed the outcome."

"Impossible." Pannis shook his head and sighed, "The outcome was already predetermined by mine and Nellie’s personalities and weaknesses, no one could have changed it, so please, don’t blame yourself, my sister."

Alcmene held Pannis tightly, a tear sliding down her cheek. (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, you are welcome to vote and give monthly tickets at Qidian (qidian.com). Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
