Chapter 790: Chapter 55 The Onlookers
The girls suddenly felt a strong sense of discomfort. Not long before, although they hadn’t said it out loud, they all secretly thought that High Priestess Alcmene’s repeated urging of Pannis was due to a strong longing for the friend she hadn’t seen in a hundred years, to the point where even seeing her friend a minute earlier would be better. As a result, each girl had harbored some strange fantasies in her heart. But now, all those fantasies had shattered. It turned out that Alcmene’s repeated urging was only because there was a debtor blocking the way, and she just wanted to watch the excitement.
"Catherine, if you had a friend come to you in tears and say that another friend had taken something of yours," Pannis crossed his arms and sighed as he asked, "and asked you to help get it back, what would you do?"
"Me?" Catherine blinked, took a moment to think, and then said, "If it were me, I’d definitely comfort her first, then agree to help, and find the other friend to get the full story before making any decisions. If it’s indeed as she said, then ask the friend to return the item, and if it really can’t be returned, then think of a way to compensate her."
"Yeah, most normal people would probably do the same. That’s the standard approach," nodded Pannis. "Sadly, Alcmene would just snicker and arrange for both parties to come together, then let them create a chaotic scene while she sits back and enjoys the masterpiece she orchestrated. The better she knows the friends, the more likely she is to behave like this. With strangers, on the other hand, she tends to act quite normal."
"Ha, ha," Catherine gave an awkward laugh, glancing at Galantis beside her, not daring to express any opinion, and could only force an explanation, "Well, um, being interested in excitement is a normal hobby, haha, nothing strange about that."
"Yes, you’re not wrong, being interested in excitement is quite normal," Pannis nodded. "The problem is, when there’s no excitement to watch, to go and create it yourself, that’s not so normal."
"Don’t speak ill of mother, ssss." The protest naturally came from Galantis, the daughter who loved her mother most. Although the Lizard Lady was aware of her mother’s bad habit, she still stood with her arms akimbo, tail erect, glowering at Pannis as she unhappily said, "Ssss, ssss, if you keep speaking ill of mother, Uncle, I’m going to get angry."
"Er, actually, I wasn’t speaking ill of her," Pannis scratched his head, helplessly saying, "I was just stating a fact. She does have that habit, and she herself admits it, right? Oh, respected High Priestess Alcmene, when will you ever change your habit of accidentally revealing your tail when you’re peeking from behind trees?"
The girls were startled and looked in the direction Pannis was gazing. Just as he had said, they spotted the tip of a Lizardman’s tail sticking out from behind a suguwood tree, which Quickly retracted behind the tree at Pannis’s words. The suguwood tree was at a moderate distance, difficult to see in the dim light, and perhaps only someone with Pannis’s perceptive abilities could detect it so sharply. But the girls were already accustomed to Pannis’s probing skills and didn’t show any surprise, only curiosity as they watched the suguwood that had just revealed its tail.
Three seconds later, a dry cough came from behind the tree, and two individuals emerged from behind the suguwood. Leading the way was a female Lizardman, also clad in a leather vest and a leather skirt, who, even by human standards, bore a striking resemblance to Galantis. However, the redness on the scales of the Lizardman had mostly faded, turning somewhat pale, indicating that she was quite old. Nevertheless, her vertical pupils still shone brightly, as lively as those of Galantis.
Following the Lizard Lady was a human, a male who appeared to be in his thirties, wearing a deep red mage’s robe with gold trim on the cuffs and hem, and a small badge pinned to the left side of his chest. His appearance was not particularly handsome, but he looked very spirited, and his gaze was not as sullen as most mages’. At this moment, the middle-aged Mage followed the Lizard Lady out, casting a curious glance over the seven-person group, pausing especially upon Pannis, and nodded amicably to everyone, his face breaking into a warm smile.
"Alright, Hiss, I will take you only this far," said the Lizard Lady without directly addressing the group but instead turned around, handed a small box to the hands of the younger man amongst the mages, and said earnestly, "It is the same way as before, Hiss, but the dosage needs to be doubled this time. Sigh, after a few more times, I’m afraid even I won’t be able to manage, Hiss, Hiss. Now, we are merely getting by, so prepare yourselves mentally. Hiss, Hiss. I think he has already braced himself. Hiss, Hiss. That’s all the help I can offer, I’m truly sorry, anything more is beyond my power."
"I am deeply grateful to you, High Priestess Alcmene," replied the middle-aged Mage as he took the box from the Lizard Lady with both hands, carefully wrapped it, and placed it inside a larger shockproof box, which he then stowed in his backpack. He then bowed respectfully to the Lizard Lady and expressed his gratitude, saying, "You have already gone to great lengths for our sake; no matter the final outcome, we can only be thankful. So please, do not apologize, saying so would only make us feel ashamed."
"Well, Hiss, Hiss, as long as you understand, that is enough," the Lizard Lady revealed a humanized smile on her reptilian face and said, "But are you really not going to stay in the tribe for the night before leaving? Hiss, Hiss. It’s already so late, I’m worried about your safety on the journey back."
"It’s alright, High Priestess Alcmene," the middle-aged Mage spoke politely, "I’ve been here before, and I know the way back as if it were my own home, there won’t be any problems. Besides, there’s an urgent need for the item, and getting back even a minute earlier would be to my benefit."
"Then, all right, Hiss, Hiss, I won’t hold you back," the Lizard Lady said, observing the rituals of cross-species exchange by clasping the tip of her tail with the hand extended by the middle-aged Mage, "Be careful on your way, Hiss. And if there’s any problem with the item, feel free to come back to me, Hiss, Hiss; I’m almost always in the tribe."
"Thank you once again for your help, High Priestess Alcmene," the middle-aged Mage bowed deeply one last time, and as he turned to leave, he again smiled and nodded to everyone before striding forward, quickly becoming a dark spot on the dim plains.
"Hiss, Hiss, Hiss, Hiss, Mom, I’m back!" It was only after the Mage had left and the Lizard Lady had finished her business that Galantis cheered, flung wide her arms, and lunged toward the Lizard Lady, exclaiming, "I’ve missed you so much, Hiss!"
