Chapter 789: Chapter 54: Trade

"Huh?" Hydra Jack approached the diamond-shaped crystal with great interest, sniffed it curiously, then licked it with his tongue, "This is fun, really fun, I want this one."

"Hey, what exactly has Alcmene taught you?" Pannis covered his face and said, "You’re the king of the Southern Marshes, not a stray dog, why do all your actions resemble those of a dog so much? Are you really a hydra?"

"What’s the big deal." One of Jack’s heads still focused on the crystal, while another lazily resting on the ground rolled its eyes and disdainfully said, "What you think I look like is your business, I’m fine as long as I like myself."

"Are you sure you really want to trade this?" While exchanging disdainful glances with Pannis, Hydra on the other hand was conducting proper negotiations with Catherine, and both actions surprisingly did not interfere with each other: "This thing is much more fun than that dodecahedron, you really want to give it to me?"

It was then that Catherine understood why previously when Pannis mentioned hydra, he commented that they might not be the strongest magical beasts but were definitely the most headache-inducing. Indeed, apart from the ability to freely travel through the mud, their nine heads with a unified will could independently perform nine different actions and conversations. Battling them was like fighting nine magical beasts at the same time, which couldn’t be more migraine-inducing.

"Truly for you." The knight girl didn’t express the thoughts in her mind on her face, but instead spread her hands, maintaining an elegant smile and nodded, "But I must clarify beforehand, the function I just demonstrated is the most basic. Any crystal of this shape and quality can do it, and although this crystal looks clear and transparent, it is actually an artificial crystal, so its real value is not high, it only cost me three silver coins when I bought it."

"Hey, big sister." Freya slapped her forehead in annoyance and muttered lowly, "I knew it, this is when I should be negotiating. Can’t her brain be a bit more flexible? There’s no need to say so many things to others."

Fortunately, Freya’s feared incident did not happen, or rather, the knight girl of noble birth understood human nature better than her. Hydra Jack didn’t show any strange reaction to her words; instead, he humanly pouted and snorted coldly, "Who cares what it’s worth in silver coins. Your world’s gold coins, silver coins, copper coins, to me, are just a pair of garbage, totally useless. Besides, why should I care whether other crystals can do the same? I haven’t seen others, I saw this one and thought it was fun, that’s enough."

"Do you have any more of what’s garbage in your eyes?" Catherine’s eyes immediately brightened, filled with hope as she blinked and spoke to Jack, "The more the better, I can find other fun things to trade with you after I go out."

"Oh, Blessings of Denia." This time not only Freya, but nearly all the girls covered their faces and shifted aside, feeling utterly embarrassed. Lina even had to pray to her Deity for spiritual healing.

"No, who would keep that junk?" Hydra, from several different directions, simultaneously eyed the crystal in Catherine’s hand casually answered, "I used to see some hundreds of years ago when fools who wanted to cause trouble in the marsh invaded us. Their bodies always left some behind, but I threw them away casually, and I don’t even know where I tossed them every time."

"That’s really a pity." Catherine sighed with genuine regret and raised her opened palms upward, "Since you are willing to accept it, then take this crystal; with that our accounts are considered settled."

"Okay," said Jack, all nine heads nodding in agreement. Suddenly, the one in the middle stuck out its tongue, deftly curled it around the crystal in Catherine’s palm, and gulped it down with a gulp.

"Hey," said the knight girl lightly, her heart still full of reluctance to part with this memento from her past. Seeing her beloved crystal being swallowed by the hydra, Catherine couldn’t help but exclaim in alarm. However, the hydra didn’t understand the girl’s emotions and only shot her a curious glance. Seeing that Catherine didn’t continue after her shout, it contentedly laid its nine heads back on the ground. Its lizard-like face even displayed a humanized expression of bliss. Its narrow, slit pupils were filled with joy.

"Don’t worry," whispered Pannis from behind Catherine, his hand on her shoulder. "Their anatomy is different from humans. They have two separate pathways in their mouth. One is a digestive system like ours, which starts the digestion process once something is swallowed. The other is a storage pouch, a large dry space where it keeps all its hoarded items. It spits them out to play with occasionally, so there’s no need to worry about your memories being destroyed."

"That’s a relief," Catherine replied with a forced smile, sighing wistfully and reluctantly taking one last look at the hydra’s mouth, she whispered to Pannis, "So, it’s all okay now, right?"

"Yes, it’s fine now," Pannis said. "I’m sorry for putting you in a tough spot because of me."

"Why would you say it’s because of you?" retorted Catherine. "This is an issue for all of us. Why take all the responsibility yourself? That kind of talk is really hurtful."

"No, no, you misunderstood. I wasn’t talking about the components of the goblin Code Disk," Pannis said with a bitter smile. "Never mind, you’ll understand in a bit. I just realized myself that it really is about me, don’t believe me? Just watch."

Pannis cleared his throat, walked over to where the hydra lay on the ground, and gently kicked its neck, which was thicker than his own body: "Wake up, stop indulging yourself, I still have something to ask you."

"Ask quickly," the hydra’s neck bridged up pushing Pannis aside, said discontentedly, "Don’t disturb me if it’s nothing important."

"Did you rush over here just to complain to Alcmene?" asked Pannis. "Since that’s the case, why hang around outside their tribe and not go in to find her? Didn’t Alcmene come out to see you? She said she was entertaining a guest earlier, wasn’t that guest you?"

"I did sneak in there just now, but she really was busy with other guests and couldn’t spend time with me," the hydra huffed. "I told her what was happening, and she told me to wait here, saying that I would soon find a solution here, and sure enough, she didn’t lie to me."

"I knew it," Pannis sighed weakly. "I wondered why she was pushing me so urgently, I thought she had become kinder over the years, but it turns out she still loves to watch the drama unfold."
