Chapter 788: Chapter 53: Saying Goodbye to the Past
Apart from the few closest to her, almost no one knew that Catherine, as a knight, always carried a pendant with her. The knight always kept it close to her body, forever hidden under her scale armor, never to be seen by outsiders, and even Pannis had only glimpsed it occasionally, never taking a serious look at the necklace until now, when he had the chance to observe it closely.
The pendant was an ordinary piece of crystal, its only distinguishing feature being the sparse impurities, making it look clear and transparent; through the crystal, one could almost see objects on the other side. The crystal was a very regular hexahedron, resembling two identical triangular pyramids inverted onto each other, only the length of an index finger, its smooth color rendering the pendant small and cute. The pendant was set in a round frame, with a simple cord running through the top of the frame, normally used to hang around the girl’s neck.
"Big sister, have you lost your mind?" Others might not understand, but Vivian grabbed Catherine’s wrist and said with a frown, "You’ve always carried this thing with you, how could you just give it away. Absolutely not, even if you give her back the original dodecahedron, I don’t want to see you giving this pendant to someone else."
"Is this pendant important?" Lina asked with confusion, "I’ve never heard big sister mention it before, does it have some meaning?"
"I don’t know either," Vivian shook her head and said, "But I remember, many years ago, big sister always had it with her, even when bathing and sleeping she never took it off, it must be something with significant sentimental value. Plus, big sister always took great care of the pendant. Remember those times she was injured? No matter the collision, she would always consciously avoid the pendant, keeping it intact. So I think this pendant must be very important to big sister, she’s already given up too much for my sake, and I don’t want to see her giving away her most precious pendant to someone else."
With a "pat," Catherine’s hand landed on the brimmed cap atop Vivian’s head, and she rubbed it vigorously, saying with a smile, "Sometimes Lina is right, you really are a fool. Have you forgotten how this crystal pendant came to be?"
"Ah? Should I remember?" Vivian frowned as she looked at the pendant in Catherine’s hand, it seemed somewhat familiar, but that was only because she had seen it many times, the deeper memories seemed to have faded from their original color, making it impossible for her to find traces of the pendant within. The Mage girl stared blankly at the diamond-shaped pendant, feeling that something was on the edge of her memory, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t touch it; this feeling made her irritated, and she wanted to smack her head hard to help herself remember about the pendant.
"Hehe, this was when the two of us last played together, we pooled together three silver coins to buy it, remember now?" Catherine swayed the pendant in front of Vivian, touching her head and saying, "That was all our wealth at that time, we agreed that each would wear it for a few days, I would wear it first, then you, now do you have some memory of it? But then you just... So those years, I’ve just been wearing it without taking it off."
"As a remembrance of those happy days in the past?" Vivian’s expression was a mixture of laughing and crying, looking at Catherine strangely. The Mage girl felt that ever since she recovered, she had become particularly emotional, easily moved by little things. She clearly understood that her sister always carried the crystal pendant to encourage herself to keep going whenever Catherine felt tired and unable to persevere, although she didn’t know if it had ever been used, but just that intention was enough to make Vivian’s eyes redden. The Mage girl blinked hard, hiding the tears in her eyes, and mustered a forced yet beautiful smile, asking in a low voice, "Are you really willing to give away something so important to her? And we both have equal ownership of the pendant, you haven’t even asked for my opinion, hehe."
"You laugh so foolishly." Catherine pressed Vivian’s head, smiling and saying, "Actually, I’m quite reluctant too, but after thinking it over, it’s not so bad. Our Vivian has been reborn, no longer the child troubled by illness as in the past. So, giving away the pendant that symbolizes those bygone days means saying a complete goodbye to the past, moving towards a brand new future together, that’s not too bad, right?"
"Hehe, then I agree." Vivian nodded with a silly smile and said to everyone, "What do you all think?"
"Tsch." Lina pursed her lips, a hint of jealousy in her words, "This is a memory between you two. Just decide on your own. Why seek our opinion when it has nothing to do with us?"
"Haha, silly Lina is jealous." Vivian suddenly leaped onto the tall, silver-haired girl, hanging off Lina’s neck. Her body had mostly returned to normal and wasn’t as light as before, so this leap almost brought Lina down. With a cry of exasperation and a forced smile, Lina struggled to shake off Vivian’s clutches, saying irritably, "Get off, get off. Everyone is watching. Stop messing around and come down, you fool. If you don’t get down, I’m going to pinch your face."
"I won’t come down." Vivian clung to Lina’s neck, rubbing her cheek vigorously against Lina’s smooth face, giggling, "Unless you silly girl promise not to be jealous anymore, I won’t let go."
"Alright, alright, I can’t stand you." Lina made a pained expression, but her upturned lips revealed the joy in her heart. The silver-haired girl struggled mightily and said, "I promise you, I won’t be jealous of you two any longer. Now, come on down."
"That’s why you’re a fool; we will always be sisters, closer than relatives. We can’t be without each other." Vivian whispered a secret phrase into Lina’s ear, audible only to the two of them, then slipped off Lina’s back, and her first action was to turn and run. Obviously, the frail mage could not outrun the priest who had strengthened her body with Divine Spell, so it wasn’t long before the two girls were on the ground, rolling around and pinching each other’s faces.
"What do you think about this one?" Without paying attention to the girl’s playful fighting, which was strengthening their bond, Catherine seriously handed a diamond-shaped pendant to Hydra, asking her, "This should meet your requirements, right?"
"Although it’s a bit small, it does look pretty nice." Jack’s huge head leaned in close to examine the item Catherine offered and said seriously, "But what’s special about this? My original collectible was particularly sturdy, invulnerable to damage. Yours, however, doesn’t seem sturdy at all."
"But mine does have its special feature," Catherine confidently turned and shouted, "Stop fighting, you two. Vivian, light."
