Chapter 786: Chapter 51: The Stolen Collection
"Roar." The King of the Southern Marshes let out a massive roar, filled with anger, "Return my collection to me now."
The furious Jack made the girls finally understand the strength and terror of a Demigod. The girls had previously encountered a fair number of Demigods, whether it was the human Odin, the goblin Christo, the Sea Race’s Doris, the Winged people’s Light and Dark Twins, the Elf Fula, the magical beast Dillie, or even the Guardians’ combat Dragon Mina, the girls could face them with a normal state of mind. As for Pannis, the most familiar Demigod, the girls had already been able to completely ignore his Demigod status and interact with him on equal terms. These Demigods, when facing the girls, also just adopted a normal, gentle attitude, and seemed no different from ordinary people. Hence, it was not until today that the girls had gotten to see what an angry, raging Demigod was like.
Jack was very angry. Its neck suddenly stiffened, not only revealing one head but also, the other eight necks burst out from the ground in an instant. Nine identical heads roared simultaneously, nine pairs of identical eyes glaring angrily at Pannis. Powerful Earth-attribute energy continued to converge towards it. The oppressive force, brought on by the high concentration of Earth-attribute energy, kept building up around, making the girls feel as if even their breathing was suppressed. The ground nearby started to quake frequently, as if there was an earthquake, all due to Jack’s rage.
The girls hadn’t expected this hydra to suddenly turn hostile, but they were, after all, extremely experienced professionals. As soon as Jack began to rage, Catherine had her giant shield up in her hands and was already in front of Pannis, shielding him from some of the pressure coming from the hydra. Behind Catherine, four small devices floated in midair, three close to the ground and one in the sky above. Rays of light shot out from around these devices, forming a right conical force field that protected the distance spellcasting class professionals behind Catherine. Freya, the controller of the force field, had by now assembled her crystal energy cannon. Lina’s spellbook floated above her head. Although it had been exhausted of energy from the recent battle, at least the Divine Spell’s amplifying effect was still active. The silver spellbook automatically turned its pages above Lina, a faint Deity’s majesty emanating from it, countering the Demigod pressure from Jack. Ava stood behind and to the side of Catherine, her fists tightly clenched. If one looked closely, they could spot a fine line on her smooth forehead, a sign that The Third Eye could open at any moment. Vivian seemed to have no reaction, but a dozen crystal vials floated around her, with various Elemental Energies converging around the Mage girl.
In fact, although the girls were not expecting the situation to change, when facing a powerful giant beast, they were still accustomed to preparing for battle even when they could communicate normally. Therefore, now that the situation had developed to this point, the preparation finally came into play. Everyone instantly entered battle mode, ready to take on the fearsome beast at any time.
But Pannis took two steps forward, patted Catherine on the shoulder, and pulled her behind him with a puzzled look, looking up at the nine swaying massive heads in the air and said, "Hey, Jack, we’re so close to the Scale Armor Tribe, if you keep on like this, careful Alcmene comes out to scold you, and these few friends of mine are not like us, you’ll cause them trouble."
"Oh, sorry, sorry," the hydra apologized out of habit, then suddenly realized and roared angrily, "Wait a minute, you almost fooled me there, I am angry, damn it, quickly give me back my collection."
This time, even though the hydra was still roaring, the girls relaxed because everyone clearly felt that even though Jack seemed unchanged, because of Pannis’s words, the Demigod’s oppressive aura that had been emanating had disappeared, which meant she clearly still retained enough rationality and was largely using anger as a form of expression.
"So tell me, why are you suddenly so angry?" Pannis, scratching his head in confusion, asked, "When did I steal your collection? I haven’t been to the swamp in years, how could I have stolen your things?"
"Even if it wasn’t you, it was someone you sent that stole them," the hydra Jack insisted that Pannis had robbed her, looking angry but for some reason, the girls could feel she was a bit aggrieved, "You already stole several of my collections a hundred years ago, and later we agreed to exchange things if needed, and recently, my things were stolen again."
"But I really didn’t rob anyone," Pannis said with a troubled grimace. "Why would you think it was me?"
"Of course it was you, don’t tell me those two bird people weren’t sent by you." Jack bellowed, "Both of them said they were helping you look for something, and not only did they not give me anything in exchange, they even tried to forcibly steal my treasure. They hit me when I refused to hand it over, and it hurt so much, just like robbers. And you’re still denying that you sent them?"
"Bird people?" Pannis frowned and thought for a while, then suddenly recalled meeting Maya and Tiya, the sisters from the Winged people, half a year ago on the Beastmen Prairie during the Horse Herding Festival. The sisters had mentioned that they found a piece of the goblin Code Disk they were helping him with in the Whispering Swamp, and it seemed they said they had gotten into a fight with Jack over it. Remembering this, Pannis looked rather odd as he gestured in the air and cleared his throat before asking, "That collection of yours, is it a dodecahedron this big, made of silver goblin metal, and looks quite beautiful?"
"What’s goblin metal? But it is indeed a silver dodecahedron." All nine of Jack’s heads nodded in unison, then suddenly he became angry again and roared, "It was definitely you guys, give it back to me now!"
This time, the furious hydra didn’t just reveal its nine heads above the ground; its entire massive body burst forth from the soil. It stood dozens of meters tall, forcing the girls to crane their necks to the limit to see its heads. Vivian, now relieved, finally had the spare attention to sense how it emerged from the ground. It was using Earth-attribute magic to meld with the soil, allowing it to move freely underground, just as humans can swim freely through water.
"Look, please calm down for a moment," Pannis gave a wry smile, clearly feeling at fault, and could only patiently try to explain, "There’s a reason for this, and also some misunderstandings. Let me explain it to you."
"I don’t want to hear it, I don’t want to hear it," Jack protested, shaking his heads. "I just know you’re a thief. Why did you rob me? You explain that to me clearly."
"Hey, be reasonable," Pannis rolled his eyes and said, "Do you want me to explain it or not? You’re listening one moment and not the next."
Jack was taken aback too; the nine heads looked at each other for a moment before his body sank back into the ground, leaving only the nine necks visible, and his voice was much softer, "Then explain it to me. Why did you rob me? And when I complained to Alcmene about it, she just laughed and didn’t join me in condemning you. It’s really too much."(To be continued.
