Chapter 783: Chapter 48 Hydras on the Plain

The nights in the lower world of the Whispering Swamp always came so early. It was just four in the afternoon and while the upper world was still bathed in sunny weather, the lower world had already entered twilight. Although it wasn’t plunged into absolute darkness, the dim light significantly reduced visibility; objects twenty to thirty meters away began to blur. However, luckily for everyone, they had already made their way through the path of flowers unscathed, stepping onto Firefly Plain. Though each person had eyes red as if they had just been crying, they successfully made it through. As soon as they left the path of flowers, everyone breathed a long sigh of relief.

Indeed, the path of flowers was filled with the fragrance of blooms and a myriad of colors that were truly astonishing. However, the girls had overlooked two most important issues. At first, all seemed well on the path, but the longer they stayed on the flower path, the more evident the problems became. The first issue was pollen. The path of flowers was saturated with a high concentration of pollen, which didn’t affect the Lizardmen due to their unique body structure, but for humans passing through, inhaling too much pollen would cause their noses and eyes to become very uncomfortable. They would sneeze uncontrollably and tears would stream down ceaselessly – an unpleasantness unparalleled even by that caused by the pink fruit flowers at the early spring festival. It was like having an entire bottle of pepper powder spilt on their faces. But this was not the entirety of their misery; there was a second problem. Aromatic scents can sometimes be as offensive as bad odors. When too concentrated, they can cause harm to those who smell them. Staying too long in heavily perfumed areas could result in dizziness, nausea, and even difficulty breathing.

Halfway down the path of flowers, the girls, incessantly sneezing and tearing up, had lost their initial excitement and were only hoping to leave this fragrant hell as soon as possible. So when they stepped onto Firefly Plain, even the composed Catherine couldn’t help but let out a cheer. A group of girls with tear-stained faces gathered around a man who seemed unaffected by it all, looking like a scene from a drama that would infuriate any man. Who would know that it was merely a tragedy wrought by pollen?

"Wait a minute!" Catherine, who was in the midst of wiping her tears, suddenly paused, her neck stiff as it turned slowly, her gaze curiously fixed on Pannis, as if asking cautiously, "I suddenly feel a bit strange, why aren’t you like us, not affected at all?"

"Because I made preparations in advance." Pannis flashed a radiant smile, showing off his white teeth, and gave the girls a thumbs-up, proudly saying, "Look, if you roll lampthread grass into little balls and stuff them into your nostrils, it can filter out the annoying pollen, preventing it from being inhaled into the nose. Moreover, it also filters out some of the fragrance, making things a lot more comfortable. As for lampthread grass, it grows everywhere in places where flowers are abundant, it’s very easy to find. You just need a few blades of grass to be free from the troubles of pollen and floral scents. Hahaha, I am indeed quite impressive. I remember so clearly my experiences from long ago, I’m really quite proud of myself."

The girls fell silent, exchanging looks with one another, and even the perpetually expressionless Ava’s face seemed to carry a hint of murderous intent. Even Galantis, who due to his physique, was also unaffected, regarded Pannis with an incredulous stare despite his strong attachment to him, and carefully stepped away, seemingly no longer wishing to stand with him.

"So, you knew all along." Catherine confirmed patiently, "And you already had a solution?"

"Of course." Pannis nodded vigorously, "The last time I came here, I suffered through the flower path once before. I would definitely remember that, wouldn’t I? The method was taught to me by Alcmene. When she saw that we couldn’t stop sneezing, she just picked a few blades of grass by the roadside. She is truly a master of herbal medicine, with a wild grass ready for any sudden ailment. And she was able to achieve such miraculous effects. I’ve learned quite a lot of botany knowledge from her indeed."

"So, I understand now," Catherine said gravely, noding her head and asking softly, "Are you prepared?"

"Wait, why do I feel something’s off?" Pannis wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and asked innocently, "What did you understand? And what am I supposed to prepare for, haha, why can’t I understand all of a sudden?"

"I understand that you’ve had a solution to our problem all along, a way to prevent us from suffering from the pollen for the past half hour," Catherine continued to exchange looks with the other girls, who slowly moved their feet and began to surround Pannis from every direction. Clenching her teeth, she continued, "But you just wanted to laugh at us, that’s why you didn’t tell us. No wonder your smile was so weird when we were on the Flower Path, and we—heady from the fragrance—were too confused to realize. You were fine while we were clueless. Alright, now that you’ve had your laugh, are you ready to face the consequences?"

"Haha, how could that be?" Pannis’s eyes flickered shiftily as he spoke incoherently, "I couldn’t possibly be that kind of person. Trust me, I am so honorable, I would never just watch you for laughs, haha, oh look, the fireflies are coming out on the plain, it’s where the Firefly Plain got its name, look, look!"

"Heh, fireflies, you think the fireflies can save you today?" Vivian, the weakest among them, had suffered the most from the pollen and her killing intent was the strongest now. A flame condensed in her hand into a stick, thick at one end and thin at the other, and the Mage girl waved the flaming stick with a sinister smile, "But, it’s fine. Let these dense fireflies be your last memory before you depart."

"Wait, stop messing around," Lina, who always walked with her nose in a novel, suddenly interrupted the playful banter between the girls and Pannis, nervously clutching at Catherine’s arm and pointing in a particular direction, "Big sister, I think I see something terrifying, look, tell me I’m seeing things."

Unfortunately, the Priest girl wasn’t seeing things; what she saw was real. Standing nearly a kilometer away from the group, was an enormous giant beast. Its body, tens of meters long, lay on the ground, with its nine long necks twisting and coiling around each other, and the nine gigantic heads bobbing in and out of sight. What was most surprising was that the body of the beast glowed; the faint illumination allowed the girls to clearly see its presence even from hundreds of meters away.

"Our luck can’t be this good," Catherine’s forehead vein also throbbed as she clenched her shield tightly, speaking gravely, "Is that... a hydra?" (To be continued.
