Chapter 782: Chapter 47 Misty Beast Road and Flower Path
"Pass through the Misty Beast Road, keep walking along the flower-lined path until the end, hiss, and you can then turn into the Firefly Plain, hiss. Past the Firefly Plain is my home, a very beautiful place," Galantis waved his tail-hands emphatically, putting a lot of effort into introducing his hometown to his new friends. To the girls, it seemed just like a child showing off a new toy to their friends with pride: "Hiss hiss hiss hiss, this path is the most beautiful one to take from the Swamp Skull Tribe back home, hiss hiss. You are so lucky, hiss, just in time to take this scenic route."
"Yeah, really lucky," Pannis nodded vigorously and said seriously, "Even though this path takes a big detour and will require an extra hour of walking, it’s not because she picked it on purpose. It’s just your good fortune, that’s all."
"Uncle, you are so annoying, hiss," Galantis’s yellow-green vertical pupil angrily glared at Pannis. It was hard to tell if her fire-red scales were blushing, but from the tone of the Lizard Lady’s voice, it was clear her mood wasn’t all that great. Stomping her foot, she protested, "The other two paths might be blocked by lakes, hiss. If they’re blocked, we’d have to turn back and that would waste even more time, hiss hiss hiss. But this path definitely won’t be, so that’s why I chose this way, hiss. It’s not because I wanted to show you the pretty scenery. Uncle, you’ve gotten worse and worse. If I knew, I wouldn’t have shared Mom’s cooking with you as a kid."
"So you’ve been conning little girls out of their sweets since then." The girls unanimously cast disdainful looks at Pannis. Catherine shook her head and said, "No wonder there’s always kids in the Holy City coming to complain that someone swindled their food, it all starts here. You, go back and reflect on your actions, and apologize to those kids properly."
"I wasn’t stealing food," Pannis retorted with a sense of grievance, "Back then, it was my habit to taste any interesting food I came across. Then I could figure it out. It was a way of exploring knowledge about life. All my odd bits of knowledge came from there. And I only ate a little; who knew she would hold a grudge for so long."
"So you’re admitting..." Catherine said with a cold laugh, "that it was you conning those little ones out of their snacks in the Holy City?"
"Uh, haha, it’s a misunderstanding," Pannis laughed nervously, suddenly taken aback, "How could it have been me? Look, I’m an adult, and not to mention, quite old. Why would I go after kids’ treats? It doesn’t make any sense, right? Plus, their little snacks are not tasty at all, nothing but sweets, which make me feel sick. Ah, no, that’s not right, I never ate them, I wouldn’t know they’re sweet, haha."
"Dare to declare war on sweets?" Catherine, being the girl who loved sweets the most, would always select desserts after meals, sweeter than anyone else’s. Everyone in the mansion, including the maid sisters and regular visitors like Rachel and Nicole, had come to understand this. Upon hearing Pannis’s words, Catherine’s eyebrows shot up and she said through clenched teeth, "Spill it, what exactly do you have against sweets?"
"No, no, no, I have nothing against them, not a thing," Pannis swallowed hard, quickly taking shelter behind Lina and declared solemnly, "Sweets are the greatest food in the world. If there were a church of sweets, I’d join it in a heartbeat, worship them like a Deity and make them my spiritual support."
"Aren’t you afraid of blaspheming Deities? You’re being silly again," Catherine rolled her eyes, not pressing the matter any further with a perfect sense of measure, and turned away from a sweating Pannis. Addressing Galantis, who was grumbling nearby, she said, "According to your introduction, this should be the flower-lined path, right? So, that means the section we passed earlier was the Misty Beast Road?"
"Hiss, hiss, not a bit wrong," Galantis was still dissatisfied with the recent events, quickly swishing its tail as it spoke, "Knight Sister, you mustn’t listen to Uncle’s nonsense, hiss hiss hiss, I didn’t deliberately take the long way around, although this is indeed the prettiest part of home. But it was simply a coincidence,"
"Of course, of course," Catherine hugged Galantis’s wildly swinging tail, comforting it by patting, "I believe you, and besides, this part of the road is truly beautiful. Getting to see this is well worth the extra hour of walking."
Catherine’s words were not just to soothe but also truth. Ever since Galantis said they had entered the Scale Armor Tribe’s hunting territory, the surroundings had turned beautiful. The bubble-spewing, foul-smelling marshes had disappeared, and the number of suguwood tree networks blocking the sky had become sparse, allowing sunlight to penetrate the overlaps and brighten the environment considerably compared to before. The various strangely shaped bushes that always made one think of magical creatures were gone, replaced by large swaths of normal-looking purplish-red bushes, arranged so neatly that the uninformed might mistake them for being planted by people. Of course, nobody would be idle enough to plant bushes manually in a hunting ground. It only looked like the bushes were neatly lined up because they were beast trails, and for some reason, these trails were parallel, making the bushes appear orderly. In this ocean of beast trails and bushes, during the day, a light mist would spread in the air, so faint that it hardly affected visibility, yet too significant to overlook. This light mist, like a gossamer veil, added a touch of haze to the bushes and suguwood forest.
The path the group was currently traversing happened to be sandwiched between seven or eight medium-sized lakes arranged parallel to each other, with the closest lakes over two hundred meters apart. Hence, the present narrow path. At over two hundred meters wide, it could hardly be called a narrow path, but on the ground between the lakes, a variety of flowers bloomed. Perhaps because of the sparse suguwood tree network allowing abundant sunlight, the flowers particularly thrived in this corridor between the lakes, covering the five kilometers almost entirely. Only a winding path in the center remained, at its widest, only about five meters across. This path was clearly man-made, likely cleared of flowers for easier travel. But judging by the irregular edges of the path, it seemed that someone had to repeat the gardener’s work every year or two.
Walking on the flower-covered trail felt like being immersed in a sea of flowers, with the fragrance always lingering in the nose. The scent was so strong that it stuck to the girls’ clothes, masking the dirty smell acquired in the marsh. Numerous butterflies and bees danced around the flowers, and, perhaps attracted by the scent on the girls, some bold butterflies started to circle them, with several landing on Lina’s silver hair. The priestess, clutching her book, froze, not wanting to disturb the butterflies but not knowing what to do. Vivian and Freya were even more extreme; the recently recovered Vivian, full of energy, had already gathered many flowers for Freya, who used her mechanic’s hands, accustomed to precise work, to weave them into beautiful flower crowns, one for each to wear. As for Ava, having lived for a thousand years in the empty Goblin Research Center with only Sigein for company, had only ever seen flowers in goblin images. Although she had seen flowers a few times since leaving the Research Center in warmer climates, she had never seen a sea of flowers like she did now. Thus, the last Triclops girl, always expressionless and speaking in a mechanical tone, was completely stupified, inhaling the intense floral fragrance, almost forgetting where she was.
"Now, can we all come to our senses?" Pannis understood the girls’ feelings; after enduring two days in a dark environment filled with strange smells, seeing such a beautiful sight naturally stirred emotions in sensitive girls. But when he saw that even the usually composed Catherine was on the verge of running around in the flowers with Galantis, he couldn’t help himself and cleared his throat before saying, "We’re about an hour away from the Scale Armor Tribe’s settlement, but it’s getting dark. Once it does, we’ll be enveloped in total darkness, just like when we were in the caves. Traveling in the dark in marshy areas is the most foolish thing to do, so unless you want to camp outside the tribe’s gates overnight, I suggest we move on. We have no other business in the Scale Armor Tribe this time anyway. If you want to see more, we can always ask Galantis to take us here again tomorrow. There’s no need to linger now."
"It won’t feel the same at that time; you truly don’t understand a girl’s heart," Freya said languidly, "Being spontaneously surrounded by flowers without any mental preparation, draped with petals and bathed in the fragrance of flowers... I... "
"Thud," a habitual knock interrupted the princess’s outpouring of emotions, and so, the world grew quiet once more.
Though Freya said this, the girls knew deep down that Pannis was right. Even though it was hard to part, they had to reluctantly extract themselves from the sea of flowers and return to the man-made path. However, they believed they would remember this world of flowers and fragrance for a long time. In their memories, perhaps only the Bubble Fruit flower sea during the early spring festival in the City of Knowledge could rival this sea of flowers. (To be continued.
