Chapter 769: Chapter 34: The Legacy from the Predecessor_1

Following the first wave of attacks, the girls seized the opportunity of the Marsh Stalkers’ inability to rise due to the slippery ground and launched several more consecutive attacks. However, despite achieving what seemed like solid gains, the actual damage inflicted on the two Marsh Stalkers was minimal. The big and small wounds on the Stalkers’ bodies were visibly healing at an alarming speed. Even if a tentacle was severed, it didn’t have much impact. The broken tentacles twitched a few times on the desert rubble and then became still. The Stalkers hardly paid any attention to their severed limbs for even a second. After all, each Stalker had hundreds of tentacles, so losing one or two wasn’t a big issue.

However, the girls had no intention of causing serious harm to the Stalkers. Pannis had made it clear before she left that their mission was simply to delay. As long as they could hold back the Stalkers, they would have won a normal battle. Although they had no desire to confront the Marsh Stalkers head-on, the girls were confident, not arrogant, and had no delusions that they could face two Demigod magical beasts head-on with their Legendary strength. As a result, although they had never discussed a plan, every move they made was ultimately aimed at delaying. All their efforts were focused on sabotaging the Stalkers’ ability to act and keeping them in place. The Marsh Stalkers cooperated nicely, their provoked anger almost driving them insane. They stayed in place for nearly five minutes, not moving an inch towards their disappearing companion, and even actively moved farther away from their companion.

The girls had no idea why Pannis wanted to increase the distance, which seemed counterintuitive. But their trust in their companions and family members led them to follow the instructions without hesitation, even if doing so might put them in a difficult situation.

Indeed, the girls’ situation wasn’t as good as it seemed. Although it might have seemed like they were constantly attacking the Stalkers and giving them no chance to retaliate, they were well aware that the two Stalkers had recovered from their initial chaos and were gradually adapting to the intensity of their attacks, and at an unexpectedly fast pace, as they were back on their feet.

The ground was still slippery, the crystal energy cannon still roared, and Vivian’s flames still burned hot, but they were hardly affected and regained their footing. They used the suction cups on their tentacles to stick to the icy surface, rendering the ice’s slipperiness ineffective. The shockwaves and flames, although hitting their scales, did not have a significant effect. The Stalkers that had regained their footing waved two thick tentacles in front of them, knocking away two of Freya’s Energy Bullets. It seemed to have recognized the person who had hurt it with the crystal energy cannon and charged at Freya together.

Freya didn’t move. Her crystal energy cannon was not suited for mobility. She was like a person completely oblivious to the beast’s approaching presence, rhythmically activating the Array of her crystal energy cannon while consuming the Crystal at a steady stream, ensuring that the barrage of energy bullets was never interrupted. The beautiful princess showed no signs of worry as she knew that her teammates were always watching her back. As long as they were there, no enemy would harm her, and they had never let her down.

"I won’t allow it," said Catherine, imitating Lady Nellie and activating the Charge of Fearlessness, rushing straight towards one of the lurkers. Although she didn’t possess Nellie’s powerful strength and Aggression, as a fellow knight, she had sensed something from the elder’s previous charges. Therefore, during this Charge, Catherine did not use her shield to collide with the enemy but held her one-handed sword level. She turned her body into the sharpest weapon, swiftly circumventing the surrounding tentacle barricade, and charged in front of the Stalker, her sword carrying all her strength and Aggression, plunging deep into the Stalker’s core. As the blade penetrated the monster, Catherine could once again see Lady Nellie’s Charge, every movement, the contraction of each muscle, the direction and power of each thrust, things that would normally be impossible to see clearly, miraculously replayed in her mind. The girl relaxed her body entirely, allowing her subconsciousness to control her movements, sensing clearly that each of her movements was a basic knight’s skill. These movements fully utilized every bit of power in every part of her body without causing any harm to herself, as if straddling a perfect balance point. Catherine was a knight who primarily trained in the basic battle techniques of knights. Despite her solid basic skills, she had never experienced this sensation. For the first time, she realized the power that could be unleashed by perfecting every basic move.

With a thud, the two forces finally collided. During the last Charge, Catherine felt as if she had hit a wall. Although the collision did not cause significant damage, that was due to her years of training. In fact, not only did it not affect her opponent, but the heavy impact also left her feeling suffocated. But this time it was different. Following her senior’s movements, Catherine’s weapon traced a subtle curve, the force erupting from a cunning angle seemed to directly hit the Marsh Stalker’s center of gravity.

Due to the shift in its center of gravity, the advancing Marsh Stalker was affected by its own heavy weight and forward push of its tentacles. Its actions twisted and wobbled for a while, eventually unable to stabilize its balance, and crash landed, its falling body raising a cloud of sand and dirt mixed with fine bone powder. On the other hand, Catherine seemed to still have extra energy, nimbly leaping back a few steps and turned to guard Freya’s side.

Since they spent a lot of time together, the girls were very familiar with each other and knew exactly how powerful each could be. It was for this reason that Catherine’s sudden progress startled the others. They didn’t believe that Catherine, just minutes earlier, could have achieved this. They would never believe that Catherine had been hiding her strength from them. Something amazing must have occurred. However, even though they were full of curiosity, this was not a good time to satisfy their curiosity. After all, even though Catherine temporarily halted one Stalker’s approach towards their two main attackers, aka the spellcasters, the other Stalker was still free. However, Catherine had no intention of continuing to block the other Stalker. Lina had taken over her job, giving Catherine precious time to breathe. The young knight was staring at her hand in disbelief, as if not trusting that the results were created by her hand. But in her mind, she was still repeating her previous actions over and over again. With each repetition, she deepens her understanding a little bit more, until she had completely memorized the sensation from her body to her moves.

As if in a trance, it seemed to Catherine that she recalled a time more than a year ago when she had just met Pannis. He had once watched her train in the backyard of the mansion and even joined her for a few minutes. The words Pannis said at that time seemed to point to the realization she was having now. However, even with a wealth of knowledge and experience, he was not a knight by profession, therefore he couldn’t grasp the essence at its deepest level. Moreover, Catherine herself lacked the required skill at that time to truly comprehend the meaning in Pannis’ words. Hence, while she gained some insights then, they were far from as substantial as the ones she had now. It could even be said that although her physical strength hadn’t changed, and the intensity and the storage of her Aggression hadn’t increased at all, mastering this combat technique could at least increase her actual fighting power by more than thirty percent.

"Sis, are you alright?" Freya, who was busy operating the crystal energy cannon and swiftly preparing other attack modes, still found the time to voice the question on everyone’s mind. "Did you just...overperform?"

"No." Catherine shook her head, her expression somewhat dazed. "Perhaps in the coming days, this will be my normal level of performance."

"Well, congrats then." Glee filled Freya’s eyes, and her plump face was lit with a smile. "From your movements just now, there’s been a clear leap in your control over your body and the use of your strength. Did the enemy’s pressure force you to enhance your strength?"

"I’d like to think that, but it isn’t the case." Catherine shook her head and spoke with respect, "I simply received a gift from a predecessor. It’s a legacy passed down from a departed predecessor to the knights of future generations."

"I think I understand." Freya nodded thoughtfully. "Did you learn these skills from Lady Nellie’s example? I’m really envious sis, we never had such opportunities."

"It’s my luck," said Catherine. "Otherwise, how could I keep up with you geniuses?"

Catherine wasn’t wrong. She had noticed lately that though she was also a part of the Legendary, her comrades progressed much more swiftly than she did. Vivian was a magic prodigy, had regained her health, and her strength was expanding every day. Lina, though not a prodigy, had an absolute devotion to her faith and was loved deeply by Denia. Thus, her proficiency in divine spells burgeoned. As for Freya, although her genius or potential didn’t surpass Vivian, she was nonetheless much stronger than the average person. Besides, she had two excellent teachers who, though couldn’t help her boost her powers directly, could guide her away from detours. Meanwhile, Catherine had none of these advantages. Every bit of her strength was earned through diligence and hardships. It was only natural others outpaced her a little.

However, the young knight didn’t indulge in such thoughts, not due to comparisons, but because she believed being the shield of the team meant she couldn’t afford to be lacking in strength, as it would be a great drag to the team. This conviction was why achieving a leap felt so delightful. (To be continued.
