Chapter 762: Chapter 27 Cunning Lurkers_1

All the hunters present today were veterans who had previously participated in hunting expeditions, each with a wealth of experience, capable of calmly dealing with any situation. However, the current situation had finally unsettled them. Just as they were gradually adapting to the frequency and strength of the Demigod magical beasts’ attacks, seizing the opportunity when some of the Demigod magical beasts’ attention was focused on the originally intended prey, the magical beasts, they were slowly rescue their comrades in a failing situation. Suddenly, mud splashed behind them again, and hundreds of tentacles rose to the sky, coordinating with the original tentacles to attack the Lizardman Hunters of the hunting team from two directions. All the Lizardmen, including Ganet and Graneer at the top of the canopy, did not expect that there was not only one Demigod Marsh Stalker lurking in the swamp, nor did they anticipate that the cunning Lurkers would use the method of ambush at the most critical moment to join the battle.

The combat power of the hunting team was indeed very strong, but the difference in ranks was a chasm that was difficult to cross. Even compared with intelligent creatures, magical beasts must deduct half a rank to calculate their strength due to their inability to use Aggression, but a hunting team of hundreds of people is already having an extremely hard time combating a single Demigod magical beast. When the second Demigod Marsh Stalker appeared, the originally stable defensive counter-offensive formation immediately became precarious and at risk of collapsing at any moment. A large number of hunters were swept up by the newly emerged tentacles, flying into the sky amidst the binding tentacles.

"Gentlemen, it’s time for you two to take the stage." Pannis, who was still standing on the treetop with his eyes closed, suddenly said to the two Legendary Rank Lizardmen, "Seeing your clansmen being attacked, don’t you intend to lend them a hand? And, Galantis, you go too. Judging by your expression, you must have reached your limit. If that is the case, go and join them."

"Hiss, really?" As the battle drew near, Galantis’s hunter’s instinct in his bloodline took the upper hand, and a longing for hunting and killing ignited in the green-yellow vertical pupils unique to Lizardmen, he asked eagerly, "Hiss hiss hiss hiss, Uncle, don’t you need my help here?"

"No need. Your strength is fine, but we are accustomed to working together, your sudden participation will cause a disturbance." Pannis shook his head and said, "Go help your clan. They need you more."

"Okay, hiss, I’ve been looking forward to this." Galantis’s sharp claws, bouncing from his fingers, rapidly swished his tail and said, "Grandpa Graneer, Ganet, when are we going?"

"But, you said..." Ganet seemed to want to say something to Pannis, but as soon as the words were out, he was sternly silenced by Graneer’s look. The old Lizardman nodded to Pannis, took off the war spear that he had been carrying for many years, and his forked tongue writhed, emitting a series of strong hissing sounds. Upon hearing Graneer’s voice, the members of the hunting team below seemed to be encouraged. Even in the midst of a fierce offensive, they still stomped the mud under their feet and replied in the same hissing sound. Encouraged by the old captain, the defensive formation, which had been on the verge of collapse, stabilized again for the time being. The defensive space, which had been compressed to the limit by the surrounding tentacles, even managed to inch its way outwards a considerable distance.

"Hiss, it’s time for us to step in," facing the battle that had been long absent, the retired old lizardman seemed to regain his youthful vigor. His hunched back straightened, even his pale scales turned a faint hue of red again. He let out a piercing screech, trod down the sloping tree trunk as if it was flat ground and charged towards the tentacle mob with full speed. Ganet and Galantis followed closely behind the elder, similar to countless times in their childhood when they learned hunting skills from him. Even though decades had passed, they did not feel any strangeness.

The entrance of the three legendary hunters immensely changed the battlefield. When Ganet received the giant shield from his subordinate, and Galantis un-strapped his battle spear from his back, the scales of the battle once again tipped. With the addition of a shield bearer and two spearmen, not only was the defensive formation re-established, but the deadlock was also restored. Under the leadership of the three legendary hunters, hundreds of upper-rank hunters miraculously withstood the siege of two demigod-rank magical beasts temporarily. Not only was there no sign of defeat, but the front was once again expanded, and the hunters who were not yet heavily injured or paralyzed by the tentacles were rescued and thrown back into battle. The hunters’ spirits reignited. Although they could not see a glimpse of victory yet, under the leadership of the three legends, they saw a hope for a safe retreat. Facing the siege of two demigod magical beasts, a successful retreat would be an honor to brag about for their whole life.

However, besides the old lizardman Graneer, who had seen some clues from Pannis’s performance, no one had imagined that the single marsh lurker would suddenly double in numbers. Therefore, when another stack of tentacles emerged from the mire, the hunters who were not at the legendary rank fell into deep despair. They were not aware of Pannis’s promise to Graneer, so the third marsh lurker became the last straw that broke the camel’s back. In their despair, several hunters even gave up resistance and were mercilessly wrapped up by the tentacles, which snapped several of their ribs in one fell swoop.

The appearance of the third lurker completely shattered the balanced standoff, and in less than a minute, at least a third of the hunters were caught by the tentacles. For the lurkers, this was a hunting operation, not a battle. They only needed to capture enough food, there was no need to defeat this group of enemies. From the beginning, these three cunning magical beasts only had the goal of capturing enough food. The previous confrontations with the hunting squads were nothing but a means to achieve their goal. Therefore, after capturing enough food in a very short time, the three lurkers prepared to dive back into the soft mire with their prey, just as they had done countless times before, and slowly enjoy the prey in the nests deep in the marsh. The residual hunters panicked when they recognized their moves. They infuriatingly shouted but could do nothing to stop them.

However, the next moment, the hundreds of tentacles in front of them, along with the hunters captured by them, vanished all at once. They did not plunge back into the marsh, but entirely disappeared in the air, leaving no trace behind. Not even three seconds later, a rain of lizardmen rained down from the sky. The hunters who were initially captured by the tentacles suddenly reappeared in the air. Losing the support of the tentacles, they naturally fell down to the ground. If the ground was not the soft marish puddle, some severely injured hunters might have been killed directly from the fall. Fortunately, the soft marsh mud once again saved their lives.

Whether they were rescued or not captured in the first place, all of the lizardmen were baffled, unable to comprehend what just happened. Only the three legendary hunters shifted their gazes simultaneously to the treetops. Pannis, who had been standing on the top of the tree, vanished along with the five girls into the upper world of the marsh. (To be continued.
