Chapter 760: Chapter 25 The Hunter and the Hunted_1

"I absolutely do not question the intentions of the High Priest, hiss hiss." The old Lizardman, Graneer, said confidently: "The High Priest is the only one in the past five hundred years who can still use the Dance of the Hunt even after stepping down from her divine duties, hiss hiss. Her devotion to the goddess and her love for our race is beyond doubt, we would never question her."

"But you do question her mage guests." Pannis chuckled: "You believe her guests caused this catastrophe, so you’re hesitant to ask her for help, right?"

Graneer shut his mouth, not disputing Pannis’s speculation, and remained silent for a while before finally saying: "You don’t know the fanatical mages from the Kingdom of Mages. They would do anything in the name of academic research — human research, forbidden research, live experiments, hiss hiss hiss. They have no ethical boundaries when it comes to knowledge, I wouldn’t trust those mages."

"Perhaps, but even within such a kingdom, there are some mages who adhere strictly to ethical guidelines." Pannis shook his head: "Furthermore, I believe you may be wrongly blaming the mage lords, the situation may be far more complex than you think, you all might just be a part of the victims. I could be wrong, but... we’ll see."

"Hiss hiss, I don’t understand what you mean," Graneer shook his head: "Anyway, how can we cooperate with you?"

"No need, I will pull our enemy into my domain," said Pannis: "Once it leaves its swamp habitat, its combat effectiveness will be greatly reduced, so you don’t have to worry about me not being able to handle it. The most important thing now is for me to lock onto it with my energy, then it cannot escape."

"Understood, hiss hiss." Graneer instantly picked up on Pannis’s unspoken meaning, gave a slight bow, and quietly said: "Then I shall not disturb you, hiss hiss hiss. May your endeavor go smoothly."

After Graneer left, Pannis folded his arms, standing alone at the top of the tree, and slowly closed his eyes. He withdrew his inherent psychic domain within him, elevating his power to the strength of a Demigod. The intense energy radiated in all directions from him, with his full perception active, every slight energy fluctuation within a few kilometers was clearly resonating in his mind.

The hunting under the tree network continued, the number of beasts in each direction was being steadily reduced under the ceaseless pursuit of the hunters. Large magical beasts fell with mournful cries, and the hunters relieved them of their suffering, turning them into sustenance storage for the tribe. Some beasts retaliated on the verge of death, but the hunters of Swamp Skull Tribe, with their rich experience, easily brushed off any counterattacks. Even the most ferocious of magical beasts failed to escape their fate.

After a while, echoing the growls of magical beasts, the earth reverberated under their stomping, and the mud they trampled shot out in all directions. The beasts, in their mad rush for survival, didn’t mind the mud sticking to their bodies.

Finally, not far from where Pannis stood, the various herds began to converge, what was originally a crowd of around three hundred had been whittled down to just about one hundred. However, these remaining magical beasts were all dominant within their race, with the weakest being of Gold Rank, and some even being of the Legendary Rank. When these mighty beasts realized that the enemy wasn’t the terrifying Hydra they were misled into believing, their resulting anger and despair fuelled their ferocity and they began cooperating, something contrary to their nature — they bared their sharp claws and fangs at the steadily approaching hunters.

Some of the hunters revealed themselves. These strong lizardmen one by one came out from the shadows behind the suguwood trees, about two or three hundred of them, each holding a large wooden shield made out of suguwood, formed a circle, and drew closer to the hundred or so magical beasts. They halted when a distance of thirty or forty meters still separated them, creating a standoff with the beasts. The beasts growled threateningly, their anxious claws scratching at the mud beneath their feet, ready to attack at any moment. The eyes of the beasts were frenzied and fierce, but the hunters’ eyes displayed the characteristic calmness of hunters. They were the innate hunters of the swamp, with the richest hunting experiences, refusing to waver or retreat because of the ferocity of the beasts. Only the splash of their blood and the disappearance of their prey’s life can transform the calmness in a hunter’s eyes into victorious triumph.

"Hiss hiss hiss..." A piercing hiss rang out from the upper reaches of the tree network, it was the command to commence the Hunt from Ganet, the team captain. With the issuance of the order, the hunters surrounding the magical beasts all banged their wooden shields loudly in unison, and advanced three steps, drawing the beasts’ full attention onto them. Just as the beasts’ attention was fully focused on those surrounding them, a quiet rustling sound came subtly from the shadows of the surrounding suguwoods, followed by the whoosh of hundreds of throwing spears flying out from the shadows, forming a densely packed layer above the beasts, with each spear piercing through the sparse leaves and branches of the lower section of each tree as if they had eyes. These heavy and sharp spears enveloped in aggression attacked from above, piercing the skin of the beasts and burying deep into their bodies with the help of the force used to throw them and their own weight.

These swamp creatures all had one thing in common, perhaps due to the swamp’s environmental influence, many magical beasts did not have their bodies covered with fur, but with hard and smooth scales instead. Such skin can allow them to move more easily in the muddy swamp and provide stronger defenses. For these magical beasts, ordinary arrows, even those imbued with aggression, would find it hard to break their defenses without some armor-piercing attributes. Throwing spears, however, were different due to their inherent traits, even ordinary throwing spears, as long as they were imbued with high-ranking aggression, could penetrate their bodies and cause serious harm.

"Roar~~~" The injured beasts finally went crazy and initiated a counterattack against the hunters, but their crazed attacks did nothing against the front line defenders who were blocked by huge shields, leaving them helpless against the spear-throwers in the back.

Everything was going smoothly, but just when everything seemed to be going well, a sudden twist occurred. Even though all the participants in the hunt were prepared for it, no one expected that the transition from hunter to prey could happen in half a second. (To be continued.
