Chapter 757: Chapter 22 Ganet and Graneer_1
Because the Lizardman race’s spines are slightly slouched forward, they appear relatively short, with an average standing height of about 150 centimeters. This body shape is convenient for them to move quickly among swamp shrubs and navigate through the flexible tree network naturally woven by suguwood. However, the Lizardman in front of them was almost as tall as Pannis. If Galantis stood with him, she would have to look up to see his eyes.
"Hiss hiss hiss." Pannis also looked serious, he made this sound towards the tall Lizardman that just appeared: "Hiss hiss hiss."
"Hiss hiss?" The tall Lizardman, with a rugged face, looked puzzled, asking Pannis in confusion, "Hiss hiss hiss? Hiss hiss?"
"Hiss hiss hiss." Pannis’s expression grew more serious, his tone heavier: "Hiss."
"Hiss?" The Lizardman looked at Galantis with appealing eyes, seemingly asking for help. Galantis flicked her tail, shook her head, and said in the common language, "I can’t understand what he’s saying either, you ask him."
"Hiss hiss, you can’t understand me?" Pannis exclaimed in surprise, "What a coincidence, I can’t understand you either. Now we’re even, since neither of us can understand the other, right?"
"Hiss hiss, I forgot you don’t understand our language." The tall Lizardman, obviously helpless with Pannis’ exaggerated expression, spoke in clumsy common language with an accent: "Humans, why have you come to our hunting ground, hiss hiss. We’re conducting a large-scale hunt, hiss. If you interrupt us, even if Galantis is with you, you won’t fall into traps, but it may still affect our normal hunting, hiss hiss. Leave quickly while the hunt hasn’t officially started, hiss hiss, Galantis will guide you through the hunting ground. It will soon be the agreed time."
"Hiss hiss, Ganet, you’re lying." Galantis bluntly accused, "How did I not know that a tribe’s normal hunt would involve all its fighting power getting dispatched? Hiss hiss, even both of the Legendary ranks have come, hiss. Even during the last migration of the two demi-god hydras through the swamp, your tribe only sent you, hiss hiss. Yet this time you even invited grandpa Graneer, and still said it’s a normal hunting, hiss hiss. Do you think I’m stupid?"
"Hiss hiss, this is our own Swamp Skull Tribe’s affair." The Lizardman Ganet raised his voice, and retorted loudly: "What does it have to do with your Scale Armor Tribe? Hiss hiss, are you intending to interfere with our internal affairs?"
"Yes, hiss, are you not satisfied?" Galantis’ vertical pupils were wide open, just like a human’s. The tail stood straight, and her back arched. She growled threateningly, "Hiss. You bastard, hiss hiss, has it been so long since you were disciplined that you’ve forgotten the lesson? Hiss hiss hiss, you dared to use that tone with me, I think I need to refresh your memory."
The Lizardman known as Ganet seemed to want to struggle a bit more, but he quickly gave up under Galantis’s threat. The miserable memories of being bullied and oppressed in his childhood surged back, causing him to retreat a few steps and stutter: "Hiss hiss, don’t do this, hiss hiss hiss, calm down, my fellow tribesmen are watching me, hiss hiss hiss, leave some dignity for me, they are looking, hiss, don’t come here, hiss, I’ve told you don’t come, what do you want to do, hiss hiss, grandpa Graneer, do something about her, she’s going crazy again, oh, sister Galantis I was wrong, hiss hiss, don’t hit, don’t hit."
At the top of the tree canopy, the upper world was peaceful, of course, excluding the bloody incident happening right now. But the girls could clearly hear bursts of suppressed snickers coming from the tree network below. It seemed that the hunters of the Swamp Skull Tribe were used to this scene and no one came out to save their poor Hunting Captain. Only after a few minutes did an older Lizardman covered in camouflage paint, emerge from the tree network. The elderly Lizardman might be old, but he was still agile as he leaped out from the tree network and stood on a tree, flicking his forked tongue and said in an old voice: "Alright, alright, hiss hiss, young Galantis, stop bullying Ganet. Hiss, you’re not leaving as soon as you come back this time, are you? There would be plenty of time to bully him, hiss hiss. We’re running short of time, better take your friends through the hunting ground quickly, if you linger any longer our hunt will have to begin."
"Hiss, Grandpa Graneer." Facing an elder of the same legendary rank, Galantis instantly transforms back into a well-behaved child, saying politely, "Seeing your movements still so robust, hiss, makes me really happy. Hiss hiss, but, can you really not tell me what you’re preparing for? Hiss hiss, I won’t be able to sleep if I don’t know the answer. Hiss hiss, please tell me, I promise not to let the cat out of the bag, hee hee."
"Actually, we’re simply carrying out our daily hunting, hiss hiss." Graneer hesitated for a moment, but insisted, "A few incidents have occurred, which is why we need to be fully prepared. Hiss hiss, don’t ask what they were. They’re issues that arose in the Swamp Skull hunting grounds, and it’s down to us, the Swamp Skull Tribe, to solve them. Hiss hiss, if we genuinely can’t handle them, we will request help from Alcmene. Hiss, but if we try to get help without trying to solve it ourselves first, then we don’t deserve to be called warriors of the swamp anymore. Hiss hiss, little Galantis, you wouldn’t want to see your Grandfather Graneer dishonoring our ancestors in his old age, would you?"
"This..." Galantis hesitated. Graneer’s tone was amiable, but his words were not. If she pursued the matter further, it would seem rather thoughtless. Yet, her curiosity was not the only reason Galantis wanted to know more. As the daughter of the High Priest, she might not inherit the role or need to study related subjects, and she might be somewhat naive by nature. However, having spent her childhood by her mother’s side and seen a great deal, her instincts for detecting issues were keen. Thus, she could deduce that something unusual must have happened from the abnormal behavior of the Swamp Skull Tribe. If she ignored it, the Tribe could potentially lose many members and maybe even affect neighboring tribes. But the young Lizard Lady couldn’t find a way to further question the elder lizardman, hence her desperate look towards Pannis, hoping the figure who featured prominently in her mother’s stories might help.
"Ahem, Graneer, long time no see." Seeing the pleading look in Galantis’s eyes, Pannis was transported back to the days in the swamp over a hundred years ago. Galantis was but a small creature, only seventy centimeters tall. Even then, she often looked to him for help, sometimes for a piece of fruit from a tree, at others for a little toy woven from reeds by Pannis. No matter the reason, her innocent gaze filled with appeal melted Pannis’s heart, just as it did now. His heart softened as he sighed and said, "To think that after all these years, you’re still as vigorous as ever."
"Hm?" The elder lizardman hadn’t expected a human to greet him. He hadn’t left the swamp in nearly a century, and he certainly hadn’t seen any humans in that time. It seemed unlikely that any remaining humans would remember him, so he hadn’t paid the group of one man and five women any mind until Pannis spoke. It was only then that Graneer took a good look at the human male, staring at him for a full minute before he exclaimed in sudden realization, "Is that you? Impossible, hiss hiss, absolutely impossible, hiss, after all this time, how could you still be alive and remain unchanged. Hiss hiss, and how is she still alive too? No wait, that’s not her. Is that your daughter with that knight? Hiss, how come you hardly look older than your daughter? When did you humans become so bizarre?"
"Ahem ahem ahem ahem, let me introduce you. These ladies are members of Nellie’s Adventure Team. The one you impolitely described, is our leader, Catherine, who is definitely not my daughter. She’s also the epitome of a knight. These are Lina, Freya, Vivian, and Ava, all are legendary rank powerhouses," Pannis introduced. "As for him, he’s the strongest member of the Swamp Skull Tribe, Graneer, a lizardman who entered the legendary rank over a hundred years ago. Seems like he’s preparing to attempt reaching the Demigod rank soon. I hope he succeeds since this is his last chance. You might not know, but the Swamp Skull Tribe and Galantis’s tribe, the Scale Armor Tribe, are neighbors. The relationship between the two tribes is extremely close; even the education of the young ones is carried out together. Ah, yes, this other legendary rank lizardman is Ganet. He was Galantis’s classmate back in the day and was often bullied by her."
"Hiss hiss, Uncle, what are you talking about?" Galantis complained. "I never bully others. Don’t slander me, hiss hiss. If Mom finds out, she’ll scold me, hiss."
"Mess up again, and I’ll tell Alcmene," Pannis shot Galantis a threatening look. Galantis lowered her head, quieted by his words. Pannis continued talking to Graneer, "The thing you guys ran into this time isn’t simple. Are you really confident that you’ll handle it just by yourselves?"
"You know what we’ve run into?" Graneer asked in surprise. "Hiss, how do you know?"
"I fooled you," Pannis shrugged nonchalantly. "You see, now I do know that you certainly ran into a formidable opponent. You wouldn’t be this cautious otherwise."
Graneer was left speechless by Pannis’s words. But being incapable of doing anything to the Demigod standing before him, Graneer was forced to grit his teeth and say, "You weren’t this annoying in the past, hiss hiss."
"But it’s not the past anymore, is it?" Despite his vexing words, Pannis added, "Moreover, I can sense the shifting energy nearby. It might be receding, but I still recognize the pressure of the Demigod’s energy." (To be continued.
